I've been planning on sharing some ideas on YA for future challenges in the "Suggestion Box" since seeing that The Moon is Down by John Steinbeck wasn't eligible for style points because it was shelved YA at BPL. It got me thinking about other possible ways to determine whether a book qualifies for style points that might still work for the moderators and what they are trying to accomplish in their challenge. I'll be posting in the "Suggestion Box" soon so that the discussion doesn't overtake the Completed Task forum.

I agree, Don, and I just finished a long post on the "Suggestion Box" thread. I know the mods have to have some way to decide that isn't arbitrary. It's such a complicated and sometimes controversial issue!

Lol, Don! I don't think I'm known for taking judgement graciously when i think I am right! Must be the Texan in me! "Remember the Alamo!" and all that. I was thinking of e-mailing BPL about their calling KJV Bible verses as YA. When Kate Vaiden was erroneously not listed as a winner on the National Book Critic Circle's web page, I contacted them and they changed it. Maybe I shoiuld have been a lawyer!(smile)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14247 comments We appreciate the desire to have discussion on this subject. However, we need to keep this thread primarily for completed tasks, so I encourage you to comment on Karen's post in the Suggest Box thread or in the Socializing thread.

Norma, unfortunately 20.4 is not a claim-able combo: you can combo books claimed for 20.4, but can't use 20.4 for combo points with another task.

Now the good news, The Dogs of Riga, qualifies for +10 lost in translation (unless you read it in Swedish)

Days of Grass (1985) by Tanith Lee (Paperback, 250 pages)

+10 Task
+ 05 Style: 4. Oldies - 25 to 75 years old: 5 points (1937-1987)

Task Total: 10 + 05 = 15

Review: Tanith Lee usually writes horror and dark fantasy novels. This one she tries her hand at science fiction. (The goodreads description have a lot of plot spoilers. Fortunately I didn’t read the goodreads description before reading the novel, and so enjoyed the novel more.) The premise: during/shortly after the invasion of Earth by aliens, human survivors went underground to survive. The novel begins 141 years later, and focuses on the eventful life of one young woman who is living underground. Recommended for readers who enjoy non-traditional fantasy novels (even though this one is science fiction, the word choices and plotting is more fantasy than science fiction).
