Michelle (Spiderg1rl) (spiderg1rl) | 734 comments I agree the legs and boots part of the image looks better. What sort of fonts did you think you were going to go for? I also think the text works with the image.

message 652: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21812 comments I think the title is a good one

message 653: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments Michelle - I honestly couldn't identify any fonts beyond Times New Roman and Arial! I tend to flick through the font choices in Photoshop until I find one that looks right. I know what you mean about the legs and boots.

Jim - thanks, that's good to hear. Strictly speaking it doesn't really make grammatical sense, but it's something that someone could easily say on the battlefield.

message 654: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (Spiderg1rl) (spiderg1rl) | 734 comments Might be worth putting the text in the same style as the picture, a sort of cream/grey text with a black/dark grey stroke around the letters.

Most people won't be able to tell if they are reading it on a e-reader but it would look better on tablet devices on the Kindle app.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I like the title. The pic is a good start on the cover.

message 656: by Katy (new)

Katy | 2662 comments I think the title works well :)

message 657: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments Well, the unanimous verdicts have certainly made my life easier!

Good suggestion with keeping everything looking sepia, Michelle.

Looks like I'm going to busy with the pixels this weekend...

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Going by your other covers, it'll be great.

message 659: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Powerful image. Just what you need.

message 660: by Michael (last edited Jan 17, 2015 07:19AM) (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments Right, this is what I've come up with so far this morning. I did try putting the text box higher but it didn't really look right. If I put it lower then it ends up hiding the soldier's arm and gun.

I can also see that the sand around the text at the bottom will need a bit of cleaning as it merges with some of the letters. Some of the text isn't completely centralised but that only take a few clicks to correct.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Very good, very powerful.

message 662: by Katy (new)

Katy | 2662 comments I like it! Very striking :)

message 663: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I like that... except for the bit of image above the writing. I don't like the split image really. I'd prefer it if the title and its background were right at the top.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments I think that would give the wrong proportions and balance to the layout Kath. Perhaps if the background of the title box were slightly translucent, so that the image could be vaguely seen through it?

message 665: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments Okay, I've updated the post so the text box is at the top.

message 666: by Katy (new)

Katy | 2662 comments I prefer the split image. In the second image, the title seems... clunky? If that makes sense?

message 667: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I still prefer that, Rosemary. There are both images there now. Go with the majority, Michael.

message 668: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I prefer the second one but I'm not in love with the font.

message 669: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments And I keep reading it as 'here we go agaIn'

Katy | 2662 comments Patti (baconater) wrote: "And I keep reading it as 'here we go agaIn'"

I do, too. But in the tune of 'Here I go Again' by Whitesnake. Oops!

message 671: by Michael (last edited Jan 17, 2015 07:19AM) (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments How about this font? I've only changed the title.

(Images now removed to speed up the page!)

message 672: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Still don't like the stripe over his bum!

message 673: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Nor me, Kath.

Maybe if all the words in the title were the same size?

message 674: by Michael (last edited Jan 17, 2015 07:19AM) (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments I had to make the box a bit bigger but here it is with all the letters and the words the same size:

(Images now removed to speed up the page!)

message 675: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Better. Now either move the box up, crop the top bit or make the box transparent.

message 676: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Transparent, I think. The hint of the gun belt thingy is evocative.

message 677: by Michael (last edited Jan 17, 2015 07:19AM) (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments I prefer having the image in two parts!

Here is the box at 75% and 90% transparency.

(Images now removed to speed up the page!)

message 678: by Katy (new)

Katy | 2662 comments I like the top one, with the more transparent box :)

message 679: by David (new)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments Top one for me, and I prefer the slither of full strength image at the top too; looks more balanced.

message 680: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Top is better. Try a bit more transparent please. 60% maybe?

message 681: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh and I'm not reading it as here we go again now the letters are the same size.

message 682: by Michael (last edited Jan 17, 2015 07:20AM) (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments Here it is at 60% and 45% transparency.

(Images now removed to speed up the page!)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments 60%. Cracked it Michael!

message 684: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Yep, 60% for sure.

Looks great!

Shame there's no small element you can Colour red like before.

message 685: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments Right, here it is with the text at the top and bottom all the same. Text has been centralised and I've cleared up the gumpf so it's easier to read my name.

message 686: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I approve.

message 687: by David (new)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments Personally, I think 45%, but other than that, great.

message 688: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Just showed it to Dave.

He said that cover would definitely draw him into reading the blurb.

Guess that's our next job, eh?

message 689: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments David wrote: "Personally, I think 45%, but other than that, great."

I thought 45 took away from the crispness of the words. Remember, it'll be much smaller on the zoo page.

message 690: by David (last edited Jan 17, 2015 07:26AM) (new)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments Are we at crossed purposes (is that the right expression?). I meant 45% strength, meaning the lighter version (we seem to be making the same point, as in clarity of text).

Jim | 21812 comments Patti (baconater) wrote: "I approve."

I like that one as well

message 692: by Michael (last edited Jan 17, 2015 08:09AM) (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments Okay, this is what I've got for the blurb so far:

It’s the eve of D-Day and Corporal James Bowden, alongside the rest of the Allied Armada, stands ready to once again venture into a continent ravaged by war.

Much has changed since the evacuations from Dunkirk four years earlier. The German army has been rolled back and James is eager for revenge against an enemy that has left the towns and cities of his nation in ruins, whilst women have sent ripples across all sections of society by serving their country with distinction.

Hardened by battle and hungry for justice, can James Bowden survive the horrors that lie in wait for him...?

message 693: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Sum it up in three words.

message 694: by Katy (last edited Jan 17, 2015 09:30AM) (new)

Katy | 2662 comments I'm not sure that this part of the sentence works for me... 'whilst women have sent ripples across all sections of society by serving their country with distinction.'

I'm unsure why, though.

message 695: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments Patti - soldier shoots enemies

Katy - too many 's' sounds I reckon.

What about something like this? Obviously, I'm not a writer. Is this too long?

message 697: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Something. Revenge. Redemption.
?

message 698: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments I think I see what you mean, Patti. How about:

D Day, 1945: after licking his wounds for four long years, Corporal James Bowden is readying himself to once again take on the might of the German war machine.

After witnessing the devastation and suffering the Luftwaffe unleashed upon the towns and cities of his nation, James is eager for revenge, justice, and victory.

Hardened by battle and driven by fury, can he survive the horrors that await him in Nazi occupied France...?

message 699: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments That one does nothing to attract female readers, I think...

message 700: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Licking his wounds is a rather horrid cliche. Sorry.
