Great reviews, Claire. I read The Rabbit Girl recently, another story about wartime Britain and evacuation, which I would certainly be reading to children studying Britain during WW2.

The Gruffalo's Child. Julia Donaldson by Julia DonaldsonMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
I read this book after hearing a lot about it from others. I think its a good read, one that most children would love listening to and reading. It is about The Gruffalo's child who goes on a hunt for the big scary mouse and encounters many different creatures/animals along the way. It has some great illustrations for children to look at and rhymes which makes it more enjoyable to read, and help children remember the story. It's a book with a lot of imagination, thus will encourage children to be more imaginative in their own writing and when telling stories. It will help them to be more creative with their ideas.

The Adventures of the Dish and the Spoon by Mini GreyMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
This book is a brilliant read! Came across it for the first time in my placement as my year 4 class were reading this as part of their English lesson. It is about a Dish and a Spoon that go on an adventure to New York and live the high life for a while until they get themselves in a bit of a bother. The children loved this book. It has less text but very detailed illustrations, which the children loved and managed to pick out the smallest details to understand what was happening in the story. The pictures are very helpful especially for children who have difficulty to read or are yet to learn to read- they can look at the pictures without having to read the text in order to understand what is happening in the story. Great book.

The Dancing Bear by Michael MorpurgoMy rating: 3 of 5 stars
I read this book with my year 5 class in SEB, and before I read it I was told it was a great read. I gave this book only 3 stars as it started off as a great read but was disappointed with the ending of the story, however, the children I read it with enjoyed the book. This book is about a little girl who finds a small bear cub and convinces the whole town and her grandad to let her keep it. A famous film crew comes into town and decides to use the bear in one of their songs. The book is great for children as it enhances their vocabulary to a great extent, and I used this book to do most of the vocabulary lessons.

Ten In The Bed by Penny DaleMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
Ten in the Bed is a brilliant short story for the very young and the old alike. It reminds me of my childhood and when i read it at a very young age. It is a fun book to read. It is about a little child who is ready for bed and sleeps with 9 other animals, but before they sleep the little child pushes the animals off the bed one by one. The text is written in a way that you can sing along to it and has a bit of a rhyme which helps the children keep track of the story and they end up knowing the words. Most of it is repetition. The story is great for the very young ones as it helps with their counting from 10-1. It has great pictures, and all these different animals which they can learn the names of and see what each animal looks like from the great illustrations. Also, it is a good book for children learning new short and snappy words that imitate the sounds for eg, bump! Overall it is a great read. Highly recommended!

The Gingerbread Man by Barbara BaumgartnerMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
This is another one of my childhood books that I read when I was young and the chorus of the book "run, run as fast as you can, you can't catch me I'm the gingerbread man" was still very fresh on my mind before I read the book again. It is a classic nursery tale highly recommended for all the children. I read this book to my 4 year old niece who enjoyed it very much. The illustrations of the book compliment the text very well. The book is about a gingerbread man who is running away from everyone that wants to eat him. This book contains repetition which the children are able to join in with and follow what is happening in the story.

The Green Ship by Quentin BlakeMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
The Green Ship is written and illustrated by Quentin Blake. The book is about two children who are bored and go on a search for an adventure. They embark on an extraordinary journey, travelling to the countries of their imagination. There is lots to talk about from just looking at the illustrations. I read this book with my year 4 class in my current placement (SEC), and they enjoyed it. This book encourages children to be imaginative and creative in their writing and illustrations. Overall, good book to read, and would recommend it.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric CarleMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
This is a great book to read to the very young. I read this with my four year old niece and she loved it- she loved the colourful pictures and poking her finger through the caterpillar holes. It is a pleasant book to read with the very young and helps with their learning of counting, and names of the days. Brilliant book. Highly recommended.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin Jr.My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This is one of my childhood favourites. It is a brilliant book to read and the colourful illustrations and repetition makes it a favourite of many children. On each page we meet a new animal of a different colour. It is a great book for children when they are beginning to learn about the different colours. The text, "Brown bear, brown bear what do you see?" is repeated throughout the book and the children can join in with the reader and easily predict the next lines. This book continues to remain children's favourite even after they grow up.
