Gwn's Challenge and Reading Lists

(1 January 2011 - 31 December 2011)
7/20
Would you like to read books by the same author, featuring the same theme, or classics? Or perhaps something uniquely you. Include the title of your challenge, the duration, the number of books you are going to read and a description of your challenge theme. Books can be posted in advanced or as they are completed.
Challenge Thread
I enjoy reading non-fiction as much as I enjoy devouring romance novels (or mystery or fantasy...). So I've decided to incorporate the two in my very own challenge...
Challenge Title: Learnin' About Love
Number of Books: 20 (10 romance + 10 non-fiction)
Challenge Description: After reading a romance, I'll read a non-fiction that relates to a theme or subject explored in the romance. (i.e. if I read a romance featuring a character who studies volcanos, I'll find a non-fiction book about volcanos, a specific eruption, or even the history of the earth's crust.)
List of Books:
Theme 1: Shark biologists, ocean conservationists

2.
Theme 2: (possible subjects include women in power, English royalty, queens, British history before Elizabeth I)

The goal is to read a book published for every year in your life. If you are in your 20's, you are given a year to complete it, in your 30's a year and a half, in your 40's 2 years, and so on. Add six months for every extra decade. Your clock starts ticking the moment you posted your list! See Goodreads and Fantastic Fiction for suggestions.

5/5 - Done!
Participants can choose to complete 3, 5, 8 or all 10 of the listed categories.
Challenge Thread
I'm going to attempt for all 10, but may only complete the minimum...it's a busy month! ;)
24 August: Since I'm falling behind (and I am working from Friday straight through until next Thursday - ugh - I'm dropping my goal from 10 to a more managable 5. ;)
"A" is For August: Read a title/author whose name starts with A.
Re-released ebook originally published in 1995. While it had very 90s prose (and dramatics!), I liked the ending (especially the letters).
Happy Birthday!: Read a book from an RRRC member's shelf whose August birthday is the same "day" as yours. SKIP
Geography: Read a book whose author/character/setting is from/in New Jersey.
My first time reading anything by her and while it wasn't bad, I won't rush out to read anything else by her (except for Kiss Me If You Can, which is waiting at the library for me). The "mysteries" were weak (I figured out the blogger and the "villan" as soon as they were introduced) but the best thing it had going for it, IMO, was the large, nosy family - and Rafe, of course! ;)
Kiss and Make Up Day: Read a book with kiss in the title, kissing on the cover or features a couple who spend the book making up.
There's a fine line between a fiesty heroine and a whiny heroine. Lexie, unfortunately, was a whiny heroine. ...whine, whine, whine, unhappy childhood....whine, whine, whine, one serious relationship...suddenly perky, but I'm experienced in bed!...whine, whine, whine, me, me, me... Ugh! After having read two Carly Phillips books, I don't think I'll be reading anymore anytime soon. I love her hero's, the secondary character's are quirky and the romance is good (though her "mystery plot" is usually weak)...but I can't stand her heroine's!
National Thriftshop Day: Read a book you bought at a secondhand shop, paid $1 or less for or borrowed from the library. SKIP
Frankenstein Day: Read a horror book or a book that features a "monster" character. SKIP
Lazy Day: Read a book that's been on your TBR list for awhile or a book which you could finish in a day (if you had a whole day to read).
(Was Soulless by Gail Carriger, but couldn't find my copy!)
Re-read, this time with the republished version. She deals with some pretty meaty issues in this book - childhood abuse, rape, the mentally challenged... as always, her characters are real.
Back to School: Read a book set in a school or a YA novel. SKIP
Romance Awareness Month: Choose a book from GoodRead's "Romance" genre shelf (first 8 pages only).
While it's a lovely little fairy tale (and it's Neil Gaiman, duh), I think I preferred the movie.
Reader's Choice! SKIP
