Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) Janet--TOTALLY loved them...I have to say that (although it is a bit silly) they are my favorite books. JKR has a way with words that just sucks you in for the ride. Sure, they might not be "literature" by some people's standards, but I had an absolutely wonderful journey with the characters and their world :)

Oh, and the 7th book completely replaced the 3rd as my favorite! :)

message 352: by Janet (new)

Janet I'm so glad you liked them! I am going to try and re-read all of them after school gets out and before the next movie comes out! I always forget books so I would like to remember them. I loved the 7th book too! A lot of action!!

I finished Specials and am just starting Extras.

The talking about Holocaust related books reminded me of a series I started a long time ago but never finished. They are called the Covenant of Zion books by Bodie Thoene and Brock Thoene. I would nominate them for the next series read but there are nine books total. Not sure everyone would want that many in the series.

I added them to my wish list shelf if anyone is interested, so maybe I can reread the first couple and finish the rest.

message 354: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I finished The Book Thief. I did not feel it's magnificence. This could be because I finished it and gave myself about two minutes to cry and then fell asleep.

I started Such a Pretty Fat: One Narcissist's Quest to Discover if Her Life Makes Her Ass Look Big, or Why Pie is Not the Answer without reading the first book. I saw it at Target and recognized it as something I'd been meaning to read.

message 355: by Laura (new)

Laura (liacobet) hey everyone, i just joined & thought i'd share! so i just finished The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and i really liked it. the topic is a sad one, but there are some funny parts since the narrator is a 9yr old boy and the ending leaves you speechless. anyway, idk if anyone is into Nicholas Sparks (author of The Notebook) but i just started reading his latest, The Lucky One and so far so good!

message 356: by Janet (new)

Janet OOO Laura- I love Nicholas Sparks. I haven't read The Lucky One but it's on my list. I have The Choice to read first. He is my all time favorite author. I am also glad to hear you liked The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. I would really like to read that sometime!

message 357: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (JaymeLyn) hey laura! i love Nicholas Sparks! A Walk to Remember is my favorite of his, but all of his other books are really good (except maybe his last two, because i haven't read them). he fulfills my need for a good romance!

message 358: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments Just finished The Book Thief. I didn't cry.. that takes a lot for me to do... or I have to stump my toe or something. Haha. But yup, basically, it's on my favorites list now. =)

5 STARS!!!

message 359: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Oh I am so so so close to finishing The History of Love. I may have to throw caution to the wind and not read the Constitution this morning (for class) so I can finish.

haha Lauren..i used to be like that for my whole life..and then for the past couple of years..i cry at the slightest sad thing. i've become such an emotional person. so weird. I'm glad you LOVED The Book Thief. it was soo good!

I just finished the Uglies..it was ok..i feel like i would have liked it alot more if i was younger. it felt much younger for me than like Twilight did. it was a decent story though..interesting concept.

Now i'm going to start The Secret Life of Bees.

message 361: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments Oooooh! Jamie.. you'll love The Secret Life of Bees. It's so down to earth. I can't wait to see the movie!

message 362: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I finished History of Love. It was AMAZING! Now I need to evaluate things--consider my book group books, books I have, and what I want to read--before I decide what to do next.

message 363: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I finished Such a Pretty Fat One Narcissist's Quest to Discover if Her Life Makes Her Ass Look Big, or Why Pie is Not the Answer last night and I'm looking forward to reading her other memoirs.

I'm currently reading The Graveyard Book and loving it.

message 364: by Spencer (last edited Jan 14, 2009 02:55PM) (new)

Spencer (spencerafreeman) I'm currently reading The 13th Tale. I'm almost halfway and it's really interesting so far. I could say that even though nothing has technically happened, the author has a way of drawing you into the story... Definitely makes me want to keep reading AND savor it at the same time (a literature oxymoron that I find myself in all the time!)

message 365: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I really want to read the 13th Tale, but I'm going to have to wait until this summer because I'm done buying books, unless it's an upcoming book club book that I can't miss.

message 366: by Laura (new)

Laura (liacobet) hey janet! the choice is one of my favooorites (if it's the one i'm thinking of, which I think it may be lol, i need to brush up on my Sparks)! the lucky one seems a little more modern, which i like so far .. hopefully it has a good ending :)

message 367: by Laura (new)

Laura (liacobet) hi jayme! believe it or not, i have not read a walk to remember or the notebook, i've only seen the movies BUT i hear the books are much better than the movies (makes sense lol). dear john is my favorite, but that's because it reminds me of something from my past .. i like books i can relate to.

message 368: by Caiti Casey (new)

Caiti Casey Spiess (mrssteven) I'm STILL reading The History of Love. I have found that the parts from Leo are an easier read than Alma's chapters.

message 369: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Caiti, Yeah, sometimes her parts left me with a big fat question mark for a thought bubble.

message 370: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) Okay, I totally caved and bought a bunch of books today. It was a thrift store and they were way cheap, so that's how I rationalize it...
I got:
Emma
The Secret Life of Bees
The Color of Water A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother
The Glass Castle A Memoir
The Gathering

message 371: by Courtney (last edited Feb 25, 2009 03:46AM) (new)

Courtney (chamilton12) I just finished Shopaholic Takes Manhattan and am glad to be done!

Now, I've started Water for Elephants.

message 372: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments Kelsey! I've got all those except The Color of Water. You'll love Secret Life of Bees. I'm watching a bootleg copy of the movie right now. Haha. Just started though.. I'll let yall know if it's good.

I liked Brisingr better than Eldest, though it is nothing spectacular. Just my opinion. :)

message 374: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) I still haven't finished Brisingr! It's crazy, because I was so excited to get it and read it, and it just kind of fell by the way side. I hope I'll get back to it soon!

message 375: by Leila (new)

Leila (justsortofreading) I am currently reading The Lion, The Witsh and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. About time that I started :)

message 376: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) The Chronicles of Narnia books are awesome. I have them all in one huge volume!

message 377: by Jen (new)

Jen | 111 comments just finished the history of love. I think I'll start the book thief tonight...

message 378: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) I just ordered a bunch of new books off of amazon, The History of Love being one of them. Currently I'm plowing my way through A People's History of the United States. Some chapters are super interesting, some are kind of eh for me, but I'm reading it because I'm going to be a history teacher, so I figure I might as well be knowledgeable in what I am going to teach!

message 379: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments The Secret Life of Bees movie was really good. I was so surprised! Of course a couple of details were changed for the movie, but it was really close to the book. You guys should definately check it out!

Finished the Extras. A little early, I know. :)

Was going to try to start either Jessica Z or Franny and Zooey for the next reads, but I don't have either of them. So started Northanger Abbey.

message 383: by Katerina (new)

Katerina | 252 comments just finished The Book Thief and now starting on A Thousand Splendid Suns

message 384: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I'm having a hard time sticking to one book right now. I really want to read The Fountainhead (love that book, but need to re-read it), which I've started already. I want/need to start reading Emma and War and Peace because they February book club picks. But last night when I was doing homework, I found myself drawn to a Teddy Roosevelt biography and Walden. Plus I'm wanting to be reading a journal (either Sylvia Plath or Susan Sontag) and Anna Karenina (so I can finally finish it!).

Someone please, please help me because I need to cut out a couple of things in order to make any progress on anything.

i always pick group reads first...here first..and then the other groups i am in..so i would say go with Emma and/or War and Peace. Or you could read one group read now..like Emma..and also one of the books you are really drawn to.

message 386: by Bree (new)

Bree (breezybaby) | 144 comments just finished The Uglies..it was alright.
now on to Lolita.

message 387: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I'm still working on The Hour I First Believed A Novel. It's long and the thesis parts are so boring I want to skip them but I know they'll end up being important to the story right at the end.
Last night I started Just Listen about ten minutes before bed. I don't know how I feel about it yet.

message 388: by Allison (new)

Allison i'm currently reading jonathon strange and mr norrell. it's a january read for another book club, but it's hugeness has made me put it off.

i also started the 3rd charlie bone book, but it's just a light, fun read, so i'm not worried about finishing it anytime soon.

i also need to start on the outsiders, for my YA literature class. picking it up from the library tomorrow

message 389: by Lauren (new)

I'm currently reading The Watchman by Alan Moore on my spare time. I lllloooovvvveeeeddd V for Vendetta, so I'm hoping this one will stick too! all my friends have good things to say about it.

message 394: by Katerina (new)

Katerina | 252 comments Jeez Lauren I'm going to have to raid your historical fiction shelf.

message 395: by Lauren (last edited Jan 21, 2009 10:32AM) (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments =) Most of the historical fiction I read is about women. It's just so interesting how their lives were lived in different times around the world. And I love scandals... haha. Katerina - I've also got a few good ones on my nonfiction shelf!

message 396: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I just finished "The Thirteenth Tale" and I am now reading "Pretties" , our February group read.
