Just finished Mansfield Park and started on the History of Love.

message 204: by Lauren (last edited Dec 14, 2008 12:04PM) (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments I'm about halfway in on The Patron Saint of Liars and I really like it. It is set in western kentucky and even mentions Owensboro (which is where I live). But it has to do with this girl named Rose and she's pregnant. I have thought a little about what it would be like to be pregnant, but now that I'm reading this book, geez.. it would be sooo weird to be pregnant. I don't know about it.. haha. It's a good book though, I'd recommend it to anybody.

message 205: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) Finalllly finished Pride and Prejudice. I started A Christmas Carol for at-work reading.
I'm reading Cannery Row, but as it's the book I put on hold to read other books, I'm not that far into it yet.
My main read right now is The Wind-up Bird Chronicle. I'm sensing the same kind of story line in all of Murakami's books I've read so far: Japanese man of questionable identity loses/needs to find something and must go underground (literally) to retrieve it. Along the way he meets a teenage girl and they have an off-putting relationship. Also involved will be some kind of psychic and a prostitute (these may or may not be the teenage girl). And all of that has nothing to do with the actual story line.

Finished the Pagan Stone this weekend and started The Alchemist last night.
Really easy quick read, but so far interesting enough.

message 207: by Caiti Casey (new)

Caiti Casey Spiess (mrssteven) Wow Justine those sound kind of like a crazy books. Let us know if this one is any different.

Cool Tami!

message 208: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I just finished "On Strike for Christmas" by Sheila Roberts. I am no going to continue with "Pirates: Scourge of the Seas" by John Reeve Carpenter

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
finished The History of Love and am now starting New Moon! (finally)

message 210: by Silvia (new)

Silvia (silverware) | 436 comments Hey Jamie! I read New Moon. I like the story line...but I think her books lack detail and description. It feels as if she'll add in a big word just for the heck of it. I wish she paid more attention to detail. The book could have been so much better.

I just finished Atonement and loved it!!! I have to watch the movie now because I love Keira Knightley!

I started My Sweet Orange tree. It's a translated book. I really like it so far!!! It's about this 6 year old boy who talks to an orange tree.

message 211: by Janet (new)

Janet I just finished Marley and Me. It was the most touching story in the world! I think any type of pet owner should read it!! It's just great. I would highly recommend it to everyone!!

message 212: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments I just got Marley and Me in the mail, but now it's on my bookshelf. I'd love to start it, but I've just got so many more I want to start on next! I know I'll cry when I read it..

message 213: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) I just finished Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist and began Marley and Me yesterday, actually. I'm also still reading Eclipse. I'm about halfway through and it's really picking up, but I never have time to read it!

message 214: by Spencer (new)

Spencer (spencerafreeman) Jamie, you have read other Murakami books? I have The Wind up Bird Chronicle and I got to about pg 50 and put it down and got busy...
I know you havent read it, but based on his other books, do you think its worth it to pick up again?

message 215: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments Ashley! I got that book not too long ago! I can't wait to read it now... hehe.

message 216: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I just finished "Pirates: Scourge of the Seas" by John Reeve Carpenter

message 217: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments I'm almost done with The Patron Saint of Liars and it's still pretty good, but I'm ready to move on to another book. Next I think I'm going to read Looking for Alaska. It looks pretty short and it's YA so it shouldn't take too long. Then on to our January group read! =)

message 218: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) Anastasia, I finished The Wind-up Bird Chronicle yesterday. I really think that Dance, Dance, Dance and Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World are much better - I don't know if you've read those. I didn't think it had the same mysterious and unnatural qualities.
I had your problem with A Wild Sheep Chase. I set it down months ago and just can't do it.

message 219: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I am now reading "Stay With Me" by Garret Freymann-Weyr.Even I am starting it now, I am making it part of my 2009 book challenge.

message 220: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa I finished Stardust by Neil Gaiman and now i'm reading another one of his- Neverwhere....
i liked Stardust but I'm LOVING neverwhere :)

message 221: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
finished New Moon..started Eclipse this morning.
Silvia..i totally agree with you on that assessment. she really does try to throw a big word out there every now and again..haha.

message 222: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) About halfway through Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix . I couldn't really read anything for the longest time because of school--so now that I'm on winter break, I've been reading like a maniac! :)

message 223: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
that's exactly how I was Jess! It feels so great to be able to read now that school is done!

message 224: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) It's gonna be a readathon now school is done :)

message 225: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I'm taking four days off work next week to fly home and I can't wait to spend all day reading (technically I do this at work anyway) and ignoring my little brother. My big project is Infinite Jest: A Novel.
Right now I'm reading Cannery Row and Northanger Abbey. I'm going to start Middlesex (Thanks again Secret Santa) in about an hour.

message 226: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
just finished Eclipse..going to start Cat's Eye.

message 227: by Spencer (new)

Spencer (spencerafreeman) good luck, Jamie.. Tell me what you think of it :)

message 228: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) Alyssa:
I've totally been thinking about buying Neverwhere, so I might just pick it up if you think it's worth it!
After finishing The Name of the Wind, I've tried to pick up other fantasy books to get my fix, but nothing is as good! So I decided to read the Harry Potter series again for the twentieth time.

message 229: by Caiti Casey (new)

Caiti Casey Spiess (mrssteven) Justine did you like The Virgin Suicides? I'm kind of worried about reading it if it's too messed up.

message 230: by Silvia (new)

Silvia (silverware) | 436 comments Ashley! I like your idea of a readathon! LOL

message 231: by Allison (new)

Allison i'm in the middle of son of a witch.
i'm enjoying it so far, but in a very different way than wicked. i can't quite put my finger on how it's different, it just seems like it is.

message 232: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) I started Breaking Dawn yesterday. It's my 50th book of the year, which is my goal, so I'm excited to get through it!

message 233: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie Lauren, I'll have to look into Patron Saint of Liars! I love books from KY (b/c I'm totally in love with this state for some reason). Have you ever heard of In Country? It's set in a fictional town that's based on Mayfield, KY (practically spittin distance from me) and was made into a movie w/ Bruce Willis in the late 80s (one of my friends plays one of the babies! haha!) I haven't read it yet but I really want to.

I just finished We Were the Mulvaneys and I can't decide if I want to start on The Hours or The Hour I First Believed.

message 234: by Janet (new)

Janet Finished my first James Patterson book. It was alright. Good mystery and very quick read, if that's something you're looking for. I've heard a lot of other people really like him but just wasn't really my cup of tea.

message 235: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) Caiti, I read The Virgin Suicides a few years ago and liked it. I seem to remember it being about the same as the movie (if you've seen it) and it's not overly graphic or anything.

I am still reading Middlesex and I forgot to pack it to take home. Oops. I started Dead Until Dark yesterday, and so far I like True Blood better. Northanger Abbey is my "read online while at work" book, so it's been slow going.

message 236: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Finished both the Alchemyst and the Magician. Can't wait for the Sorceress. These are ya books, but they are very entertaining and fun.
Now starting Peter and the Starcatchers. Last of the loaned books.

message 237: by sara frances (last edited Dec 22, 2008 08:51PM) (new)

sara frances (sara_frances) I am reading Watchmen and it is sooo good! I had to pick it up after i saw the preview for the upcoming movie. Graphic novels FTW! =)

message 238: by Allison (new)

Allison i finished son of a witch and just started the history of love. so far, i'm enjoying it.

message 239: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments Allison - I need to start Son of a Witch: A Novel. I read Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West and loved it. So I bought that one too. I read your review.. it is still good enough for me to read?

I finished Looking for Alaska last night. It was pretty good. The ending was good and bad to me. I can't quite make up my mind.

Now I'm reading The Last Empress, which I love because it's historical fiction. Hehe. The things this woman went through and she still ruled the throne for years and years with grace and intelligence. Makes me think, hmmmmm... if I were her and lived in that time, I would have sucked. Big time. Haha. But seriously, it is a really good book. =)

message 240: by Caiti Casey (new)

Caiti Casey Spiess (mrssteven) Lauren let me know what you think of Son of Witch, I have both Wicked and a Son of Witch but haven't opened them yet.

message 241: by Jen (new)

Jen | 111 comments lauren, I love historical fiction! Any suggestions? I have two Phillipa Gregory books sitting in my room waiting to be read. Any other good authors?

message 242: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments Just look at my historical fiction bookshelf. I recommend all of them! =)

message 243: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
I would recommend The Heretic's Daughter. I am not that into History, it is okay but not my most interesting subject, but I really liked that book.

message 244: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments Tami, I've got that one... I can't wait to read it. I've just so many books I want to read first!

message 245: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
just finished Cat's Eye..really ended up enjoying it. It did take a little bit to get into it..but i honestly love her writing and really the whole story once i got into it..i felt some parts at the end were dragging a bit however. glad that i kept going with it!

going to start What They Always Tell Us..my little sister recommended it to me..so..we will see..it looks like an easy, quick read.

message 246: by Allison (new)

Allison lauren- although i didn't enjoy son of a witch as much as wicked, it was still a good read.
part of the reason i don't think i enjoyed it as much was that it took me so long to read it (being busy with school and what not) and so i had to go back and review parts of it. and because there were many different tasks that liir had to complete, it got a little confusing.

i just finished the history of love and charlie bone #1.
i've just started the tales of beetle the bard.

message 247: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I just finished "Stay With Me" by Garret Freymann-Weyr and I am now reading "Just Listen" by Sarah Dessen.

message 248: by Allison (new)

Allison i also finished the tales of beetle the bard- it was a very quick read.

i'm now reading the sisters grimm series, i'm on the first book.

message 249: by Caiti Casey (new)

Caiti Casey Spiess (mrssteven) Allison I also just finished The Tales of Beedle the Bard. I loved it! I also finished the second book in the Series of Unfortunate Events just before I started reading The Tales of Beedle the Bard. I'm working on The History of Love.

message 250: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments I'm about halfway through The Coma and it's really annoying. It's about a guy who isn't quite sure if he's still in the coma or wtf's going on. I couldn't wait to read it, but now it seems like just some random guy's crazy ramblings. Maybe it will get better... we'll see.
