So I'll but in Night Road by Kristin Hannah instead because I just got that one for 60% off at Barnes and Nobles :) I'll definately be reading Mockingjay first, even though I'm kinda scared to. My husband finished reading it and he had to go have a man-cry for awhile, so that's why I've been putting it off. However, my husband is very sentimental so maybe I'll be ok. He cried during Star Trek the movie...

I'm so sorry Suzanne. I don't know how I overlooked that one book. I haven't tried the author yet myself but I'm planning to soon. Hope you enjoy Mockingjay. I'm still in your TBR btw checking out new books :)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments Shell - I haven't read the Scarecrow Series. I'll have to check it out! :)

the scarecros series starts with
Ice Station, and then Area 7; Scarecrow and then this new one - its been like 5 years since a book in this series

~KarenH~ | 11332 comments Thanks for the great picks, Dee! I'm definitely planning on reading Sweet Persuasion - I've been looking for a way to fit that in since I finished Sweet Surrender a week or so ago. I would also like to do one of the buddy reads, any of them would work for me except Saddled and Spurred - I haven't read Corralled yet and I'm more than a little obsessive about reading series books in order. There are a few others that I'd like to fit in too, but that will all depend on whether or not I can fit them in before I run out of month! :)

Thanks for the picks Penney! You have nothing to worry about with your picks because I really want to read everything! I'm going to try to read as many as I can this month and I'm not sure which ones in which order yet.

I do know that I will start Secrets of a Summer Night after I finish the book I'm currently reading.

I'd love to read Animal Magnetism with you as well. If we could maybe read it after the 10th but before the twentieth? I'm going on vacation next week and return to school on the 20th. If that won't work for you that's fine just wanted to try to get it in when I'm available.

Let me know when you can do the buddy reads! My best time would be right in the middle of the month, but if you can't I can try to squeeze them in another time!

Great! Let me know when you get your copy, mine should be ready any day- as long as the person who's got it returns it on time.

message 213: by Thenia (new)

Thenia | 288 comments Jim, you have no books in your TBR shelf but I think I've read at one of your comments somewhere that that only means you're open to anything... If that's the case, then these are my picks for you:

The Highs
1st Place - Some Girls Bite - Chloe Neill
You've read vampire books and I was a little surprised that this one wasn't among them!

Baby Names - The Amulet of Samarkand - Jonathan Stroud Nathaniel, our hero and djinni Bartimaeus make a great team. Bartimaeus is hilarious!

New Blood - What Dreams May Come - Richard Matheson A unique story, beautifully written. You may have seen the movie (starring Robin Williams), but as usual, the book is a lot better.

The Low
Rats and Mice in the stud shed - Head Over Heels - Jill Shalvis
You've read the first two books of the series and since both got 4 stars I'm thinking chances are you'll like this one, too.

The Daily Routine
Daily Feed - Dune Messiah - Frank Herbert
5 stars for the first book but you either haven't read the rest of the series or you haven't added them. If you haven't read them, consider this a little push towards them. Maybe you'll read this one and motivate me to read it too, since I'm still stuck in the first one myself!

Rotating Paddocks - The Duke And I - Julia Quinn Your experience with historical romance has been disappointing at least according to your ratings on your shelf. Maybe this book will change your opinion of them a little bit.

Stud - Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen You've read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, but you haven't read the original! I know that zombies are probably the reason you read it in the first place, especially considering your dislike of historical romances, but it's a classic and although you being a guy will probably scoff at it, it's one of the first feminist books ever written. Give it a shot.
...oh okay, I'll recommend another non-feminist classic: Aesop's Fables. It's basically a collection of fables, many of them well known. It's interesting seeing how stories told so many years ago have integrated in our everyday life and speech.
(I'm not recommending a sexy book - they're easy to find and you've already read a few so you probably know where to look for more.)

Spread the Love ~ buddy reads
Poddy Calf - The Reptile Room - Lemony Snicket
We've both read the first book of the series so we could read the second one together. Or we could read The Fallen by Thomas E. Sniegoski - orphaned hero etc etc. They're not that short but not too long, either. Or we could read Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy - not short at all but has a 12 year old that pairs up with a Walking, Talking, Fire-throwing Skeleton! Sounds like she needs love to me.

Breeding Stock - Eon: Dragoneye Reborn - Alison Goodman A series with very good and loud reviews.

Okay, I think I've covered enough genres so you'll hopefully find something you like in there somewhere. Let me know if you're interested in the buddy reads.

Happy reading!

~KarenH~ | 11332 comments Thanks Dee, but you gave me plenty to keep me busy without throwing something else into the mix! ;) I'm having enough trouble trying to fit my various challenges together this month - that could be considered a separate challenge all by itself! And even without Saddled and Spurred there are still 3 to choose from for a buddy read, so I'm sure we'll be fine.

Megan, thanks for the picks! I like them all so I have no idea which one I'll read... They are all in my TBR except Wizard's First Rule, but I was just checking that yesterday so it's funny that you'd recommend it!

I like both buddy reads, but I've been itching to read Tiger's Curse so we could start with that if you feel like it. Sounds like fun! Let me know! ;)

Caroline (pip_squeak) Lacy
Finally your picks for you! I really hope that you find something you like...

THE HIGHS
1st Place
I really loved this book Last Letter from Your Lover it's fantastic.

Baby Names
Lol!! I had enough trouble finding a name for my daughter!! Who coinsidentally will be 6 on thursday!! We named her Felicity Bobbi (Flick for short) so on that note I've chosen this book for you...Bobbie Faye's Very (very, very, very) Bad Day Did you see what I did there?!! I noticed that you liked the Stephanie Plum series, I've heard this series likened to them, they are so hilarous and I just love Bobbie Faye as well as her name!

New Blood
A recommended Author is Barbara Erskine, she is my all time favourite author and I have read all her books! I fell in love many years ago with Kingdom of Shadows, but my most favourite of all is Hiding from the Light and this is what I am recommending for you to read!

THE LOW
Rats and Mice in the Stud Shed
I have a couple for you here! Dan Browns The Lost Symbol - The Fiery Cross By Diana Gabaldon, I have just finished the first in her series and can't wait to read the next installment, and Dan Brown is always a good read.

THE DAILY ROUTINE
Daily Feed
I noticed you read and like Nora Roberts, so I have picked Vision in White for you, I have not read this but will be adding it to my TBR! If you read it please let me know what you think.

Rotating Paddocks
Not sure if you normally read alot of Chick lit? Could It Be Magic? This lady is a Goodreads Author, great book and a lite read.

Stud
Jane Eyre I've never been in to Classics, but have recently read this and I must say I really enjoyed it!

SPREAD THE LOVE
Poody Calf
Okay so this I found a hard one! But in the end I picked The Picture of Dorian Gray from all accounts this man needs some love or something! If not I'd love to read this!!

A Veiled Deception I picked this as it looks and sounds good! If you'd like to Buddy read one or both please let me know!

I really hope you find something you like, if not please ask and i'll repick for you. Happy reading x x

Tiffanny Picks for Fran - Group D

1. 1st Place - Book rated 5 stars.

Too Hot to Touch By Louisa Edwards: I noticed that this comes out on the 2nd, so it's a new book; however, the review it had rated it 5 stars =)

2. Baby Names - Name that you love.

Pleasure Unbound By Larissa Ione

Desire Unchained By Larissa Ione

The MacKade Brothers:Rafe & Jared By Nora Roberts
I love the Underworld General Series by Larissa Ione! Also, I know that you didn't have any Nora Roberts books on your shelf, so this one might be out there for you. I'm not a huge Nora fan, but I absolutely LOVE the MacKade Brothers. There are 2 short stories per book (there are 4 brothers). The name Rafe is so unusually, and after reading this book, I just love it =)

3. New Blood - New author.

Lola & the Boy Next Door By Stephanie Perkins -- I also have this book listed under my tbr books. It sounds like a cute story.

4. Rats & Mice in the Stud Shed - Another book in a series that they've read.

Demon from the Dark By Kresley Cole -- I am a HUGE Kresley Cole fan. I love her series!

5. Daily Feed - Book from an author that they rate highly.

The Highlander's Touch By Karen Moning

6. Rotating Paddocks - Book from a genre they don't regularly read.

Room By Emma Donoghue -- This book has become very popular, and I even added it to my tbr list.

7. Stud - Well-loved classic or a sexy book.

The Perfect Play By Jaci Burton -- I love this book. The man is this story is so swoon/drool worthy!

Ella Enchanted By Gail Carson Levine

8. Poddy Calf (Buddy Read) - Short book to read where the H/h needs love.

Candy Houses By Shiloh Walker

Mythe & Magick By Shiloh Walker -- I saw that you've read a few Shiloh Walker books, and thought that you might enjoy these. The first one is part of the Grimm Series, which is like the old fairy tales told in Shiloh Walkers new version. I have them both on my tbr list as well.

9. Breeding Stock (Buddy Read) - Book that you think could be a keeper.

The Help By Kathryn Stockett --I've heard nothing but good things about this book =)

If you would like to do a buddy read on any of the books just let me know =) I hope that you find something you'd like, if not just let me know and I'll make some new picks...Happy Reading!!

Then out of the ones I already have, I'm having a hard time choosing! I'm thinking either The Lost Symbol, Vision in White or one of the classic choices! I need to think about it! I'll get back to you soon.

Thanks again!

Ashley♥Alexis | 309 comments Hey Shell-Here are my picks for you!

The Highs
1st Place -
All of my 5 star ratings are either in the middle of a series or M/M so... I thought I would recommend I'll Be Your Drill, Soldier because it was on your interested in shelf. It was asctually the first m/m i ever read so it's a good one. I would also recommned Her Vampire Husband which is Paranormal romance if you don't want to dive into m/m, this book is the 3rd book in a series but it's pretty much stand alone.

Baby Names - This was kinda rough... I dont usually go crazy for names. I guess i'll have to say Zinnia or I'll Be Your Drill, Soldier because Grabowski is a pretty kick arse name.

New Blood - ok, bare with me. I couldnt figure out who to reommend that you havent read abook by and Finally i settled on Kitty Thomas. I've read one of her two books. In the process of reading her second one and I will say she doesnt write for the faint of heart. Her ideas are really interesting and you have to keep an open mind while reading it as well as relize it's just fiction. So, even if you dont agree with the subject matter she writes really well and is just amazing. <-- my disclaimer.Comfort Food, Tender Mercies

The Low- I was going to recommend reading another installment of Breeds but you didnt seem to read them in any order so I'm going to suggest you pick up Cry Wolf since it's on your TBR shelf. The second book in this series is one of my favorite books of all time.

The Daily Routine
Daily Feed -
I see you like J.R. Ward. You should totally pick up Crave I know you only gave the first one 3 stars but I thought the second book was better because it gets more complicated and interesting.

Rotating Paddocks - I'm going to recommnd historical romance because it looks like neither of us really reads it. I'm usually not a fan of it but when i first started reading romance thats all I read and I still really enjoy the book: Morning Glory

Stud- I dont know too many "well known" books but I know a lot of sexy books =} Special Delivery, Mouth To Mouth, Burning Wild... Those are just the tamed stuff lol

Spread the Love ~ Buddy reads
Poddy Calf -
based off your TBR shelf i'd be willing to read Faith & Fidelity with you.

Breeding Stock - hmmm I keep most of my m/m books cuz they're so dang expensive. But i guess something thats on both our list is Can You Keep a Secret? which sounds like a keeper to me.

Hope you find something you'd like to read!!

Yay! I'm glad you found something to interest you. That was my only concern. I'm actually reading Animal Magnetism for a book club discussion, so I'll be reading it at the beginning of the month. But I have no problem waiting to discuss it with you when you're ready :)

message 226: by KimKirt (new)

KimKirt | 1638 comments Okay, Penney, are you ready gal?

1st Place: For your champion cow book, I'm actually recommending two, because I couldn't decide and they both are on your TBR. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Hitler era story with ups and downs (well, mostly downs). But it's really good. And Redeeming Love. This is a Christian Romance and oh my gosh is our poor heroine a tortured soul. It's about finding herself through all her struggles and finds some romance while she's at it.

Baby Names: For a name I loved, I'm recommending Up Close and Dangerous by Linda Howard. The hero's name is "Cam" and I thought that was a strong, silent, handsome name. Good book. I think I sent it to Jim, see if you can squeeze it out of him.

New Blood: Ahhh, she writes such sweet, vanilla books (don't run screaming yet). Truly, I mean, there my be a little implied sex and some of hers do have short sex scenes, but mostly it's all about the romance. I'm talking about Catherine Anderson. Try Only By Your Touch.

Rats and Mice: Well, looks like you've been digging the Alex Cross books by James Patterson. Go ahead and get #15 out of the way! Here's your push. My rec for this category is: Alex Cross's Trial.

Daily Feed: You rated "Bet Me" by Jennifer Crusie as a 5, so I'm going to recommend Maybe This Time by her. Go in knowing it's not really a romance and I think you'll really like it!

Rotating Paddocks One of my all time favorite authors is Carl Hiaasen. I love his tongue in cheek writing and used to read his newspaper column when I lived in Florida. Try one of his first, Tourist Season. An oldy but goody.

Stud I picked the well love classic to recommend, so I'm saying try The Princess Bride. It was different then I thought it would be. Good, just different. It's well loved, so go for it if you want to well-love it too.

Poddy Calf: Okay, I'm recommending another by Catherine Anderson. It's on your TBR and mine. Annie's Song Mute girl gets knocked up by some mean guy so mean guy's brother feels sorry for her and marries her. Sounds like she needs loving, that's for sure! I know it's not short, but I thought I would recommend it for the "needing love" factor.

Breeding Stock: I would like to read The Help by Kathryn Stockett before the movie comes out (which is soon!). It is well loved by a lot of people and I think it could be a keeper book.

So, there you go! Hopefully you can find something that appeals to you. If not, just let me know and I'll keep on digging!

Kim

Thanks for the recs, I'm going to start with The Hunger Games. They are filming it near where I live and it's been hyped up so I want to read it! I couldn't get to it last month (July) so I'm going to put it first for this month (August). I'll let you know about any others I get to (and maybe buddy reads too). Thanks!

The PINK definitely dies away (maybe about half way through?) - a lot of ppl only give the first book 3 stars but go on to love the rest of the series. I would say, try it again when you are in the mood to just 'read' and be tolerant - content to just plough through the first half of the book. It really is more urban fantasy than romance though - so if you want the romance, it's not really there except in very small spurts. :)

Hope you enjoy the other recs :)

Lover Mine (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #8) by J.R. Ward (finally as I keep getting that one picked for me.lol)

I would like to read Unlocked (Turner, #1.5) by Courtney Milan as a Buddy Reads, but if you can't due to time commitments just let me know.

Sarah Dizon (sarahd828) | 236 comments Clare, Thank you for the recs! You did a fantastic job. There are so many on the list I want to read.

Here are my tentative options (I'll try to get through as many as possible):

Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
Spider's Bite by Jennifer Estep
Early to Death, Early to Rise by Kim Harrison
Fire Me Up by Katie MacAlister or Sex, Lies, and Vampires by Katie MacAlister
One for the Money by Janet Evanovich

I'd also love to do a Buddy Read with you!

I picked Covet by J.R. Ward, so let me know if that will work for you. I already have a copy, but I don't know if you do. I have done a few buddy reads and they get me to read books I keep putting off! :)

message 234: by Pollyanna (new)

Pollyanna (polly8) | 300 comments Hey Lisa I am really pleased to be picking for you because it looks like we have quite a lot of books in common.

The Highs
1st Place - Soulless by Gail Carriger All my 5 stars that we have in common you have read but this is a vamp/werewolf book that is a little different and I found it very funny.

Baby Names - Outlander by Diana Gabaldon I love the name Jamie for a boy and this is a fave book of mine, I just need to get hold of the 2nd one in the series.

New Blood - Graceling by Kristin Cashore This gets recommended a lot and it is because it is such a good book, really think you would like this one.

The Low
Rats and Mice in the stud shed - Forever by Maggie Stiefvaterseeing as you have read the first 2 I thought I would add this in here.

The Daily Routine
Daily Feed - The Host by Stephenie Meyer I see you gave 5 stars to all the Twilight series and I also loved this book, I really want the 2nd in the series to hurry up and come out because it was such a great read.

Rotating Paddocks - this was really tough as you seem to have quite a range of genres on your shelf but I thought I'd go with something historical and cultural so I've picked Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See This book has made me want to read more about Asian culture.

Stud - Touch the Dark by Karen Chance Not my favorite series but it is definitely a sexy book and it is on your tbr.

Spread the Love ~ Buddy reads
Poddy Calf - I have picked Magic Study by Maria V. Snyder because I think it fits with the theme of someone needing to be loved.

Breeding Stock -
Vampire Crush by A.M. Robinson this is on both our tbr's and it has quite a lot of 5 star ratings so could be good.

Hope you like your picks, I look forward to seeing what you pick :)

Tiffanny,

Thanks so much for the great recs! I am having a hard time choosing, but I think I will go with Candy Houses. It looks really good and not something I would ordinarily pick up. Since you put it under Buddy Read I'm hoping you want to read it too- if you do, just let me know when. If I can squeeze any more in this month it will be Ella Enchanted and/or The Help. Cheryl (cawils_99) Hi Sana, I hope you can find something you like out of what I picked for you.

The Highs

1st Place- The Club by Sharon Page, I loved the characters and the story in this one. It has it all.

Baby Names-Everlasting by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss, The heroines name is Raven Seaburn and I think it just screams sexy.

New Blood-The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, This is probably my favorite dystopian book.

The Law

Rats and Mice in the stud shed-Chain Reaction by Simone Elkeles, it looks like this is the last in the series for you.

The Daily Routine

Daily Feed-Love, Rosie by Cecelia Ahern, you rated this author pretty high so I hope you enjoy this book as much as the others.

Rotating Paddocks-The Bonesetter's Daughter by Amy Tan, this is one of those books that has suck with me for years as one that I thought was really different in a good way.

Stud-Lessons From a Scarlet Lady by Emma Wildes, very sexy.

Spread the Love-Buddy Reads-

Poddy Calf-Die for Me by Amy Plum, we both had this on our TBR list and it looks really good.

Breeding Stock-Club Dead by Charlaine Harris, this is one of my favorite series and a guilty pleasure. It seems like something that you could get into too.

Hope you find at least one that you like. Let me know if you need something different. Enjoy!!

Sarah Dizon (sarahd828) | 236 comments Regina here are my picks for you!

The Highs
1st Place – Raziel by Kristina Douglas, I really loved this book and it is on your TBR. If that option won’t work you should try Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins.

Baby Names – Sophie is the main character of Hex Hall. I really enjoyed this book and if you pick it I hope you do too.

New Blood – I always recommend these two books and neither of them are on your TBR so I hope you give them a shot. They are The Sugar Queen or Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen. They are wonderful stories and anyone I’ve recommended them to who has read them, loved them!

The Low
Rats and Mice in the stud shed – Witch Heart by Anya Bast, you’ve read the first two, why not continue? Also, Betrayal by Gillian Shields, I don’t think the third one is out yet so you still have time to catch up.

The Daily Routine
Daily Feed – Persuasion by Jane Austen, this is my all time favorite book, so if you pick it I hope you enjoy it!

Rotating Paddocks – I noticed you have read a lot of romance and some of other genres so I am going to recommend something completely out of the park. Go Ask Alice by Beatrice Sparks. It is a very short read. It is supposed to be a compilation of journal entries from a young girl who struggles from drug addiction. I was told they are real journal entries but I am not sure of that.

Stud – I’m going to recommend a classic, I noticed you’ve read some so I hope you’ll enjoy this. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, it is on your TBR so I know that means you’re interested in it. I think it a great book.

Spread the Love ~ Buddy reads
Poddy Calf – Highlander Untamed by Monica McCarty

Breeding Stock – Hunting Ground by Patricia Briggs

Raziel (The Fallen, #1) by Kristina Douglas Catching Fire (Hunger Games Series #2) by Suzanne Collins Hex Hall (Hex Hall, #1) by Rachel Hawkins The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen Witch Heart (Elemental Witches, #3) by Anya Bast Betrayal by Gillian Shields Persuasion by Jane Austen Go Ask Alice by Beatrice Sparks Frankenstein by Mary Shelley Highlander Untamed (MacLeods of Skye Trilogy, #1) by Monica McCarty Hunting Ground (Alpha & Omega, #2) by Patricia Briggs

Julie | 56 comments Coffeentea,
It took me a while to comb through your massive TBR. Isn't it wonderful to have so many books to read? Never bored! You have quite a large paranormal collection. Since that is not a genre that I pursue, I'm not familiar with most of those authors. So, I hope I have chosen books that you will enjoy from your TBR and a few that you haven't tied before.

Baby Names-Bubbles Unbound/Sarah Strohmeyer
New Blood-Obsession/Karen Robards
Rats & Mice-What a Dragon Should Know/G.A. Liken
Daily Feed-Hunting Ground/Patricia Briggs
