***** Finished 9/12
This is a hard book to review. In part, because it was an uncomfortable book to read. Harry is facing the consequences of his past and his past decisions. He has to think about his life, his friends, family and his city.
The book deals with all kinds of ghosts: from the ectoplasmic to the ghosts of memory and past. It is not a place to start the series.

This was a very enjoyable start to a new-2-me series, and I'll be continuing it. One of my all-time favorite series is Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern, and though this is a very different take on them, they are also very beautiful and varied.
Cooke's dragons are "Pyr" and serve as a balance/protector of the four elements of earth, air, water and fire. They are few, and there is internal strife between the Pyr who protect earth and humanity, and the slayers who wish to wipe out humanity.
This story focuses on the "Smith," Quinn Tyrell, who has his "firestorm" (time for mating) and his finding and winning of his mate. Interesting cast of sub-characters, and the other half of the main romantic pair, Sara Keegan, is a practical, but open-minded accountant. She must overcome her disbelief, and Quinn must confront his perception of the past if they are to find their HEA. Along the way, they have enemies to confront, damsels in distress to rescue and must learn to work with the other Pyr.
It had a satisfying end, and sets the stage for another Pyr to find true love in the next installment.

The second and the fourth are my favorite of the series.

At the rate I'm going, I'll be close to caught up by the time Kiss of Snow is released in paperback! :D

His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik - ★★★★ - 17 Sep 11
This series has been sitting on my self for a while. Actually, I gave the first four books to my mother a few years ago and only just recently repurchased them. My mother was looking for something to read and she loved the series so much, I told her she could keep them.
Much of the book is about Captain Will Laurence and Teremaire learning the ways of the British Aerial Corp and preparing to take their place in the war against Napoleon. Laurence has come into the Aerial Corp unexpectedly and almost against his will. He was the captain of the HMS Reliant, of His Majesty's Navy, when he and his crew captured the French frigate carrying an unhatched dragon's egg. Since dragons are a valuable asset, Laurence knows his duty is to see that a member of his crew becomes its aviator. Things don't go according to plan and Laurence has no choice but to leave the Navy behind. Being an aviator is even more of a hardship than the being in the Navy. Ships dock and the crew can disperse to their homes and families. An aviator, whether at war or not, has to take care of his dragon. In the very beginning, Laurence isn't happy about his situation. But the more time he spends with Teremaire, he realizes he wouldn't trade the dragon for any ship in the Navy. They share a close bond.
The world of the aviators is interesting. There are female aviators because there is a breed of dragon that prefers females. Like the Navy, children are sent to the training grounds at a young age, both male and female. Laurence is a little taken aback by this, but he doesn't get too hung up about it for long. To the other aviators, it's natural, since it the way they've been brought up. Because of the way Laurence became an avaitor, there is some initial resentment and reserve. Many of the lieutenants have been waiting years for a dragon and Laurence is an outsider.
I really enjoyed this book. The author was able to integrate the dragons into the world, yet it still had the feel of the era as it truly was.

Glad you liked this one Christina, I've got the first one here looking at me :D
And I'll definitely have to read #2 of Dragonfire soon.

Really? :-( I thought I was the last...oh well.

I'm surprised you haven't read the Teremaire series yet. :D I know -- so many books, so little time. ;-)

Sorry about that. :-\

Exactly Christina, though I've only had that one about 6 months. LOL

Werewolves, zombies and romance (though, thankfully, not with the zombies): Where do zombies come from? Well, Caleb Locke was more concerned with hunting them down for revenge, but he actually ends up on a quest with that answer also necessary for his final revenge. Instrumental in discovering that answer is Samantha Wagner who also has her own agenda for getting rid of zombies.
Light mystery, lots of action, and heavy attraction make this a fun read, with some nice twists.

It must have...;-) Should we call in search and rescue? The Green Berets or some Rangers? Mulder and Scully?

given how slow it is going I can't say that I missed anything by not picking the series up before this. My spidy sense just said NO!

I surely hope not...that would be just nasty!

I really, really liked this book! The author really did her research and it showed. Glad I have the next 2 already!

Hey Heather, meant to ask and spaced on it earlier...could you add your finish date into the review?

I thought about that after I hit post but just figured the date on the post would be fine since I said today, sorry! I finished it 9/18 and it was for the read in 2010 shelf.

I figured that was probably right, but it makes it clearer, especially as we're not always on the same date. THANKS!
Posts 490-this one are all on the 9/25 for me...but not necessarily for you. I'm never sure how the GR dates are figured. Is it when the post was posted according to my time zone? Which would be the most logical, to me....
Now starting my silly experiment....I'm posting this at 8:15 a.m. plus a minute or so on 9/25. (actual posting @8:24)
490 8h4m ago...9/25 12:10a.m. or so
491 4h25m ago....9/25 3:55a.m. ish....Steph...were you just getting up or going to bed?
492 4h18m ago...9/25 almost 4 a.m.
493 25m ago...9/25 7a.m. or so)

I'm off to catch up on all the posts on this thread and update our status post.
Oh, and I'm about 3/4 through my "read in 2010" book, I should finish it tomorrow. Still need to pick a book for this week's shelf.

Lol! I do believe you might be psychic.
