DIRECT LINK: 'dragons'

Busy day tomorrow, so I'm making this week's announcement early.

Still no winner! Happy Reading!

Josie | 1967 comments Thanks, Steph! I can't believe we haven't had a winner yet, it must be getting to the stage where every team has a chance to win :D

Josie | 1967 comments I'm either reading The Dragon Who Loved Me (Dragon Kin, #5) by G.A. Aiken or Dragon's Bait by Vivian Vande Velde .
Oh and I'm so sorry Kristen but I'll probably change my UF book since Covet is so... long. I like it but if it was 100 pages shorter, I think I'd be less bored. I've been awful on my book choices recently, keep swapping all the time. I'll keep it for now and try to force-read :S

Vi | 943 comments Wow, that was early. Mr. Randomizer's having fun, I expect, keeping us all on the edge of the seat. Dragons doesn't help us much, still out of the way stamp.

My shortlist:
Dragon Bound (Elder Races, #1) by Thea Harrison Dragon Actually (Dragon Kin, #1) by G.A. Aiken His Majesty's Dragon (Temeraire, #1) by Naomi Novik Eon Dragoneye Reborn (Eon, #1) by Alison Goodman Dragon's Bait by Vivian Vande Velde (from Josie) A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire, #2) by George R.R. Martin (too long, but I can try)

Has anyone read His Majesty's Dragon?

Kristen (k10bentley) | 422 comments Finished my Urban Fantasy: City of Ashes
Stars: One
Review: I don't know why I thought I would like the second one, when I wasn't a fan of the first one. Too much teen angst and too many characters that seem to pop up at random times. I'm glad the teens love this series, because I sure don't.

It truly was a struggle to get through it and I wish I hadn't.

Kristen I've been trying to convince myself to read that one too after not really caring all that much for the first one... I'm guessing your vote is on NO! right? :P
I really should clear those kinds of books out of my TBR list btw... I think I've grown too old for that much teen angst!

Well, I wouldn't go with Love in the Time of Dragons then. That's her 3rd dragons series, and they're all kind of related. There's a bunch of characters from the first two series in that book, Including the talking Newfie.

If next week, Angels or Magic is called, then nobody will get a Bingo next week. IF angels is called, then we get another 4-in-a-row. Not sure if any other team will get though.

We will be in a two-way race with Team 3 if paranormal romance is called. We are the only team to have one 4-in-a-row. Others have 2 or more, I guess. Bad luck for us.

Thenia | 977 comments I read Lover Avenged by J.R. Ward that was shelved in the Dragons for some reason. I'm finally (almost) catching up with this series!

Lover Avenged (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #7) by J.R. Ward

Date finished: 10 October 2011
Rating: ★★★★

Review:
The story continues, this time from new and older points of view. We get to see through Rhev's eyes, as well as Xhex's, Elhena's and one of my favorites, John's, as well as Wrath's (which was kind of a surprise).

The Brotherhood keeps evolving and finding their way out of some problems and into others. Wrath is finally embracing his destiny, Rhev discovers his and John makes a decision that makes me want to jump into the next book right away!

A good series with lots of ups and downs and, yes, still lots of dramatic dialogue and expressions but the story's got too much potential and flow for that to be a problem.

Looking forward to reading the next book!

message 522: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments LOL! Glad you mentioned the shelf for that one, Thenia, because I never would've guessed 'dragons'. But, that's the fun of searching those shelves; never know what you'll find hidden there. :) Glad you enjoyed Rhev's story.

So true... I'll never guess why people shelve some books the way they do! I'm moving on to John's story tonight! Looking forward to it (and to catching up to one of my few dozen to-read series)! I'm so far behind! O_o

message 524: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments LOL I hear ya. I liked John's story a lot more than I was expecting. Didn't like her giving him a HEA so soon, but he and Xhex are a great match. Enjoy!

message 525: by Kristen (new)

Kristen (k10bentley) | 422 comments I started reading: Daughter of Smoke and Bone (Daughter of Smoke and Bone #1) by Laini Taylor . It's too new to be shelved anywhere...but it could be dragons. There are a bunch of chimaera in it.

I'll get to my real dragon book this weekend, but anything by Laini Taylor is too good to put on hold.

message 526: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Chimaera are usually more kitty-like than dragonny, interested to hear what you think of this one Kristen.

Vi | 943 comments I finished Daughter of the Blood (The Black Jewels, #1) by Anne Bishop on 12th October for the Dragons shelf.

Rating: ★★★★
Review: I've been intrigued by this book for long and I finally picked it up this this month for a challenge. There was no info-dumps (which made sense) but we were able to understand and follow the world which is some skillful work by the author. I thought the pacing of the book could have been better as it lagged in some places and picked up in others. But at the end of book 1, I immediately crawled into a hole and with the help of Kobo, commenced to consume the rest of the trilogy. It was THAT good.

Oh and I've heard people compare it to Kushiel's Dart but they are in no way similar to each other.

Unholy Magic (Downside Ghosts, #2) by Stacia Kane

Date finished: 13 October 2011
Rating: *****

Review: Chess has really screwed up this time! She's put herself inbetween a rock and a hard place on top of an erupting volcano underneath an anvil on a string. Chess is a screw-up but I love her just the same. Her addictions have put her in the predicament that she's in but her job is so difficult that it's her addictions that help her keep her sanity. Can't wait to read book #3! Book #4 will be out in 2012, will have to wait for that one.

Josie | 1967 comments For urban fantasy:

Something Secret This Way Comes (Secret McQueen #1) by Sierra Dean

Title/Author: Something Secret This Way Comes by Sierra Dean
Date finished: 14 October 2011
Rating: ★★★★
Review: Vampires, werewolves, were-vamp hybrids, it's all been done before but nevertheless, I still thoroughly enjoyed this. Maybe I've been away from UF too long but I thought it had a different feel to it. And even with a love triangle (and it seems that there are more love interests yet to come), I'm moving onto the next one straight away (and with a cliffy like that I dare anyone not to). The writing was good and I really liked Secret (yes, that's her name but somehow it works). It has more romance than the traditional UF but I didn't mind that although I think it could be an issue for some.

message 537: by Steph, Serious series addict (last edited Oct 14, 2011 06:32PM) (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments A love tri?? Awh! LOL! Nah, sounds good, good review, hun. :D Sounds like it falls into the UF-R category, yah?

message 538: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Sounds good Josie :) might have to bump it up the list.

message 539: by Josie (new)

Josie | 1967 comments Lol Steph, that was my reaction too! I dislike love triangle, love-squares (or would that be love-quads?), anything like that but it wasn't too bad. It was leaning towards UF-R but it didn't have some of the aspects I associate the genre with. For example, 'Night Huntress' and 'Guild Hunter' I would say are both UFR and they both have one main guy that the heroine sticks with the whole time. In this there were two (who to be fair do seem like they're sticking around), plus more in the next one, so her love life is still changing. But maybe that's not a necessity to be a UFR? Is there UFRs with more than one main guy?

Yay Sandra, I hope you like it then :)

Josie | 1967 comments Wow, I can't believe there's no winner yet. At least with angels, we'll have another 4 in a row :)

Kristen, you can definitely put me down for The Dragon Who Loved Me (Dragon Kin, #5) by G.A. Aiken for the dragon shelf and it was out of Lover Avenged (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #7) by J.R. Ward and Forbidden (The Demon Trappers, #2) by Jana Oliver for angels, but seeing as Lover Avenged is 719 pages, I'll go with Forbidden ;)

message 543: by Kristen (new)

Kristen (k10bentley) | 422 comments I'm going with Archangel's Consort (Guild Hunter, #3) by Nalini Singh and get me some more Raphael!

message 544: by Vi (new)

Vi | 943 comments My shortlist:

Archangel (Samaria, #1) by Sharon Shinn Ascension (The World of Ascension #1) by Caris Roane Forsaken (The Demon Trappers, #1) by Jana Oliver Raziel (The Fallen, #1) by Kristina Douglas - I should have all of them with me but I need to search for the 3rd and the 4th.

City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare is also shelved under angels. I've read only a small part of it but so far, I'm NOT liking it and I want to stop reading. Why is it so famous?

message 545: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Sorry Vi, I'd be the wrong person to ask. LOL. It's YA, not my fav genre. Maybe Twilight fans jumped on the CC bandwagon?

You can switch your book if you want to, better to read something you like :)

Cindy (eclecticfirefly) (eclecticfirefly) | 1237 comments I love YA, and I have the first 3 of that series here waiting to be read, but I haven't read any of them yet! Sorry.....

message 547: by Vi (new)

Alyssa (lyssad87) | 974 comments I just finished Ill Wind (Weather Warden, #1) by Rachel Caine for the Urban Fantasy space.

1. Date finished: 10/16/11

2. Rating: ★★★★★

3. Review: I really enjoyed Ill Wind. It's a lot different than what I've been reading lately. It was fun.

The djinn were totally awesome, even though sometimes they were completely frustrating. I think Joanne is a great heroine. She's so strong and never gave up. I'd also love to see more Lewis in the next book. He sounds like a super interesting character.

Crazy ending too. Sounds like the next book will be just as exciting as the first.

I've already requested Heat Stroke (Weather Warden, #2) by Rachel Caine from PBS. Can't wait to get it.

message 549: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa (lyssad87) | 974 comments Sorry that I've been MIA. I started reading The Good, the Bad, and the Undead last month and just got stuck. I had a little bit of a problem getting through the first book too. Plus, then school just started eating up any extra reading time I had. (I guess a benefit of not being able to read is that I still have all A's. Meh... I'm not as excited about that as I should be.)

So, I've come to tell you that I'm going to try to do better. *fingers crossed*

I'm planning to read Firelight (Firelight, #1) by Sophie Jordan for the Dragons space.

I'm also planning to read Torment (Fallen, #2) by Lauren Kate for the Angels space.

I'm hoping to start Torment today once I get my homework done. (The angels book seems like the best one to read next since it will give us another four-in-a-row.)

Happy reading! :-)
