Chime by Franny Billingsley 361 pages
My short review: Connie had rated Chime 5 stars. While I didn't hate this book, I found it very difficult to immerse myself in the story. There were a few slow parts which pushed my out of the story. I also guessed the ending early in the book and then convinced myself that couldn't be the ending because it was so obvious. I did love the setting and the characters. It was just missing something to keep my full attention.

I agree this book should be on the WT best books list. It was funny, smart, and sometimes philosophical. I really loved the incorporation of Shakespeare; makes me want to go read some of his plays myself!

Awesome job! We're not even done with the first month. :)

Kristen, I think you're right, though I didn't think much about it. The story is about two kids, a Japanese girl and a Chinese boy so I just assumed it fit. I guess the topic puts it into a more adult category, though I find that ironic considering how watered down it was. So no go then?
Checking on the rest of my things for safety -- the X-men graphic novel Ultimate X-Men: Ultimate Collection, Book 1 is put under fiction rather than YA, but it's also like a comic book read by YA...would it be disqualified as well?
Also, I'd been planning on using The Oracle of Stamboul as one of my two books taking place in another country (it's about a brilliant young girl and her view of the world). Some on GR have called it adult, others YA, and my library says it's just under general fiction while the author says that he hopes the book will appeal to "those adults who read the occasional young adult novel" (http://www.amazon.com/Oracle-Stamboul...).
Sorry for the length, but figured I'd best get everything sorted at once so I don't mess it up again. :)

I think in the past we've used really where libraries place books. For X-Men I would count that as YA, I think a lot of graphic novels are flux between Teen and adult, like all of the graphic novels at the library I go to are right next to the Teen section, which gives certain implications that most are YA unless overly graphic. It's easier to tell with Manga because most of those have ratings.
As for The Oracle of Stamboul, I think it's definitely pitched as adult like Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet.
What we've used in the past is if it's found in a YA or MG section at a library or book store you're good to go.

I absolutely think this should be on the list. In a time when most dystopias want to ride The Hunger Games wave, this one was refreshingly different. A great beginning to what I believe will end up being a great trilogy. And the cover? Stunning! (Not that that has a bit to do with it.)

I would say yes because I think it makes it easier for Kristen and I to keep track. I would say, however, that if the full task isn't completed by the end, that we would take those half-task points back from the total. Kristen?

For the first time maybe ever, I agree with the judges. This book deserved the many, many awards (and list mentions) it received. Usually I'm left wondering, "Who the hell chooses these books? Do they even know audience that reads them AT ALL?". I didn't feel that way about Ship Breaker. It was fabulous. I cannot wait for the next book, The Drowned Cities. I know it's going to be just as good. The funny thing is that I have had this book on my nightstand for over a year; I've picked it up and put it back down several times, mostly, ironically, because it was a multiple award winner (and I didn't like the cover). A book winning awards usually immediately turns me off because I usually can't figure out why it was chosen over such better fare. I'm glad this one proved an exception.

*I'm counting this as poetry because it does have poems woven in throughout that she ruminates on in her journal. If that's not okay, let me know. Most of the poetry books I've found are less than 100 pages, so it's a tough category to fill.

I liked this book. I did. A lot. Do I think it deserved one of the highest honors in YA literature for 2008? Absolutely not. 2008 was a really good year in YA lit. Books like The Hunger Games, Graceling, The Dead and the Gone, and Paper Towns were all 2008 books, and in my ever-humble opinion, much better choices. I think it should definitely hold it's place as a nominee, but not the winner; especially when none of the above were even nominees.

I think that's fine. An FYI for future challenges, Ellen Hopkins writes her books in verse. They are VERY good and well over 100 pages.

4.10 Junonia and Nerd Camp. They were kids' books, not YA, so I'm counting them both together. Both are genre: realistic fiction. 144 pages and 160 pages.
