message 1726: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I finished reading Ruled Britannia by Harry Turtledove Ruled Britannia by Harry Turtledove yesterday.

I really enjoyed this book. The intrigue, the language, the historical fiction was very well done. The only thing I take issue with is the fact that alternate histories is classified as science fiction. I just can't see where the science fiction comes into it.

But if you like alternate history, this is very good.

Alternate histories get put into Sci-Fi because at its essence SF deals with alternate realities.

message 1728: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I think of alternate histories as "what if" books. If there's no explanation of how the alternate realities exist, then there's no science fiction.

message 1729: by C. John (new)

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 404 comments All stf. is "what if". It might happen, but it might not either.

message 1730: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I still can't go there... to me, the book was really historical fiction.

message 1731: by C. John (new)

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 404 comments Then we shall politely agree to disagree.

message 1732: by Rafael (new)

Rafael da Silva (morfindel) | 60 comments Historical fiction handles with the past.

message 1733: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 659 comments Alternate history gets put in SF for historical reasons: because it was so often hand-waved with quantum mechanics or produced with time travel, both SFnal.

message 1734: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Yes, I can see that and agree with it. But this book was basically an exercise in "what if".

message 1735: by Scott (new)

Scott Unless there is some kind of SF element like the ones Mary mentioned, I wouldn't consider it SF.

message 1736: by C. John (last edited Oct 14, 2017 06:18PM) (new)

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 404 comments Because they are dealing with alternate realities I have always considered them Sci-Fi. Besides it doesn't really matter what any of us think. If you want to read the book then the SF section of the library or bookstore is where you shall find it.

message 1737: by CD (new)

CD | 112 comments Just finished The Three-Body Problem.

Highly recommended. Extensive review coming soon!

message 1738: by Deb (new)

Deb Omnivorous Reader | 66 comments I suspect that alternative histories as sci-fi harks back to the days (not that long gone) when ALL fantasy fiction was on the same shelf as sci-fi. It just hasn't gone on to get it's own classification yet, like space opera and post-apocalyptic have.
