Esther (eshchory) | 82 comments mark wrote: "I just started Zoe's Tale tonight. still not sure how I feel about it. I like YA well enough in general but it felt at the beginning as if Scalzi was pushing the YA-style teen romance a bit much."
I actually felt that considering the events of the previous book Scalzi was being mean to make the romance so sweet. Other than that I really enjoyed it.
The book's strongest section is towards the end when Zoe examines her relationship with the Obin. Scalzi pulls no punches and I found it quite moving.

Bruce Deming Revisiting the Battlefield Earth by L Ron Hubbard, diplomatic conference chapters; recently slammed through the amazing Wind-Up Girl by Paulo Bacigalupi; rereading of the short story The Pushbike Legion by Timothy Jordan; AND browsed over and old Mark Twain short that was pointed out by another called, "From the 'London Times'" which had a paragraph on what looks rather like a conception of social media:

"The scene now changes to Chicago. Time, the autumn of 1901. As soon as the Paris contract released the telelectroscope, it was delivered to public use, and was soon connected with the telephonic systems of the whole world. The improved 'limitless-distance' telephone was presently introduced, and the daily doings of the globe made visible to everybody, and audibly discussible, too, by witnesses separated by any number of leagues." Esther (eshchory) | 82 comments I have nearly finished with Cloud Atlas. I like it but it has been an incredibly slow read for me.
The writing is enjoyable but I'm not sure if it holds together as a novel.
More of a 'nice' than a 'great'

Edwin Horlings | 19 comments Finally taking the time to read Forever Peace by Haldeman as part of a Worlds Without End challenge. Where I absolutely love The Forever War, this non-sequel is somewhat disappointing. Will read to the end though.

Hi, I found the futuristic section with its made up dialect quite off putting, enjoyed the rest though.
