My dad loved that series and insisted I read it!

I've been listening to Suspect Suspect by Robert Crais by Robert Crais

(I'm a sucker for a dog on the cover - and it's a great mystery thriller!)

Tad (tottman) | 54 comments Just finished Willful Child by Steven Erikson which was kinda disappointing. Intended to be a comic sendup of Star Trek, the jokes are pretty sophomoric and obvious. More damning though is the thin plot that runs through the book. I realize that the adventures were supposed to be "episodic" as part of the riff on Star Trek, but it really didn't work.

Yes, The Martian by Andy Weir was awesome and I've read it a couple of times also. Did you know that they sold the movie rights to Ridley Scott?"

That has the potential to be AWESOME!!

Jenny (jennyc89) I'm reading Hawkeye, Vol. 1: My Life as a Weapon (so pretty and YAY Kate Bishop) and Lights Out (Doctor Who short story). Who thinks I can read 17 books this month to finish my challenge?

Kerry Went to Library Sale and they were discarding classic sci-fiction. Are these still classic, which is the gem, if any?
Picked up
Eye in the Sky

dhalgren

Man Plus

Reviews are 3.72 for both Dick and Pohl and 3.83 for Dhalgren, the longest book by far.

Rion (orion1) | 87 comments If you view the image the resolution was bigger. Eye in the Sky was the name of the book. But yeah those book covers were not linked. And since I posted I'll add that I just finished Foundation and Earth Foundation and Earth (Foundation, #5) by Isaac Asimov . Not my favorite from Asimov so far but still worth at least 3.75 stars. I've finally decided to pull the trigger and read The Sparrow The Sparrow (The Sparrow, #1) by Mary Doria Russell . I did buy Sand Sand Omnibus (Sand, #1-5) by Hugh Howey recently and will start it next. I'm worried that I might need to read Wool first?

haven't read the other two but I thought Eye in the Sky was great.

Rion wrote: " did buy Sand Sand Omnibus by Hugh Howey recently and will start it next. I'm worried that I might need to read Wool first? ..."

two series are separate as far as I know. since it is a group read this month I will probably be starting that one myself in a week or so.

Galaxy Press (goodreadscomgalaxypress) | 9 comments Just finished Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick , King of the Gunmen by L. Ron Hubbard , Saga, Volume 1 by Brian K. Vaughan (I know, I know, but I had to try a graphic novel) and now am on Good Omens The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Terry Pratchett , and laughing the whole way through. It's awesome.

Sérgio | 74 comments Just read Dying Inside by Robert Silverberg and really enjoyed it. I'll definitely be looking for more of his books, if they are in the same vein.

What books of his are as cleverly written as this and/or have such an intimate perspective?

I'm going to start The Sentimental Agents in the Volyen Empire by Doris Lessing. It's the fifth book of her "space fantasy" series Canopus in Argos.

Do you guys know if these books are self-contained or if it's better to read them in a certain order? thanks

Well, I read them in order back when they were first published (and remember eagerly awaiting the next in the series). Why would you want to read them out of order? My memory's sketchy, I can't remember them as being strongly connected, but I definitely have the sense you would miss something by doing it that way.

AMD | 12 comments I am currently reading Lacuna: Demons of the Void. An interesting first effort from David Adams. Fairly fast-paced with good character generation and dabs of science. I just learned there is another book in this series and, if it is as good as what I have read of the first already, I am looking forward to more.

thanks for replying

It's just happens to be the book of her that I found, and since I have it around, i'd like to read it before I can figure if I'm interested in reading more of her work :)

Btw, I just found this here: "There is no linear progression from one novel to the next, and Mrs. Lessing indeed stresses that they should be read independently."

message 1323: by AMD (new)

AMD | 12 comments Apologies ...

Lacuna is a Science Fiction story that begins on Earth in 2029. Humans have begun to develop some fascinating new technology when an Alien race bombs and destroys three major cities. Spurred by the attack, humans join together to build three giant space vessels, warships really, to protect Earth from a new unknown alien race they nickname demons. This story is primarily character driven but, with the help of one main character, introduces new tech like jump drives. It nicely combines current tech with future tech, sparking curiosity and adventure simultaneously.

I am still reading it and finding it quit enjoyable for both characters and science. I'll see how it washes out in the end.

All right, I guess I'll defer to Ms. Lessing's opinion! I recall them getting airier and airier - the first was the most down-to-earth/straightforward. (Down-to-earth being a particularly ridiculous metaphor under the circumstances!)

Kathy (lyk2read) | 4 comments Just finished The Martian yesterday. Really enjoyed it; best sci fi I've read since Wool trilogy and Old Man's War! And I can see why it was the 2014 Goodread Choice sci fi winner. Next up is Scalzi's Lock In.

Currently reading The Golden Compass -- part of a YA challenge for another reading group. 100 pages in, and still not sure where this is going.

If my husband ever finishes Anathem, then I'll get a crack at that one too.

Rion -- Sand is a totally different story line / plot / characters than the Wool/Shift/Dust trilogy.
No need to wait to read it until after reading Wool.

It's been some years since I've seen the movie, but the book goes a lot into the backgrounds and relationships between the students. The premise is a bit different, too.

'carolyn Elizabeth | 7 comments Artifact, Gregory Benford. I am about half way through and so far it's been a disappointment. I love Benford, and go to him for good, hard scifi. This one is so slooooowwww. So far it's about the sleazy bad guy and nothing much has happened except a lot of tension, punching, lying, and things going wrong with the dig.

James Mascia (jmascia) | 1 comments I've just finished the Ender's Game Saga... all the books in the original series and the Ender's Shadow series. Then I saw a posting that Card was working on a new one to tie up and bring the two series together... then realized the post was about four years old and got sad.

So, now I'm reading the Star Trek Typhon Pact series while awaiting the next Star Wars book.
