Dune. It's really living up. I'm reading it for the first time :)

Alexa (AlexaNC) | 302 comments Wow. To be reading Dune for the first time; I'm kind of envious!

message 1253: by [deleted user] (new)

It's pretty amazing. I've been sucked in from almost the start, and things just keep getting better and better! I'm done the first book; taking it slow because I'm reading it with some friends [we're all reading it for the first time.]

message 1254: by Scott (new)

Scott I just finished Time Travelers Never Die.

message 1255: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) I'm on The Martian train. 5/5 stars easily. It's a new must-read.

message 1256: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Jenny wrote: "I'm on The Martian train. 5/5 stars easily. It's a new must-read."

I can't wait to read that one, Jenny. I've been reading Mistletoe Murder today. I'm visiting Boston and the weather here is horrible.

message 1257: by Banner (new)

Banner | 138 comments Reading Defenders. I'm really getting my fix on this one. 1/3 in and it's great.

message 1258: by William (new)

William Soppitt | 4 comments Reading Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency but finding it a little tough going.

message 1259: by Scott (new)

Scott William wrote: "Reading Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency but finding it a little tough going."

I went into it expecting another Hitch-Hiker's Guide and was disappointed. I think I might like it more if I read it again.

message 1260: by William (new)

William Soppitt | 4 comments Hi Scott, yeah read hitchhikers quite a few years ago now but this is certainly a challenge. Does have some great writing but the main character seems to escape me.

message 1261: by Jessie J (new)

Jessie J (subseti) | 69 comments Just finished two good ones:

Khe by Alexes Razevich

and

The Stone Man by Luke Smitherd

Jenny wrote: "I'm on The Martian train. 5/5 stars easily. It's a new must-read."

Wicked good book. Gotta say I'm disappointed in Mark, though, he never tried once to make vodka out of all those potatoes.

In the midst of Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury.

message 1264: by [deleted user] (new)

Well Dune definitely earns all that praise it gets. Really great book. Here's my review.

I started Promise of Blood, interesting beginning so far.

message 1265: by Scott (new)

Scott | 130 comments I haven't posted in awhile but some of the books I recently finished were:
Something Wicked This Way Comes, Christine, The Martian, and Code Zero.
Now I'm reading Stardust.

Don Lavanty | 1 comments Just finished Cauldron of Ghosts by david weber & Eric Flint.
It was a good read been following the "honorverse" for a while.

Currently reading "Like a mighty Army" also david weber
Like a lot of military scifi it has almost all of the tropes that populate the genre. eg. Hero never looses, Diplomacy is a foreign concept. Heavily relying on some type of tech being better than everyone elses.but I am only reading it because I am a completist. how ever bad a series gets I just read them in hopes they get better. This is not the case. The one thing about this series that bugs me the most is there is almost no character development in the books. Most characters are a one shot except the few leaders of the heros.

message 1267: by [deleted user] (new)

Just finished Prince of Fools! A very, very different book from any of the Broken Empire books. Here's my review

I'm on to The Garden of Stones, seems like stock fantasy but with some crazy creative worldbuilding so far.

Bob Cooper | 3 comments In the middle of Enormity , by Nick Milligan.

message 1269: by Sheron (new)

Sheron McCartha (sherimc) Loved Caliban's War by James S. A. Corey

Rion (orion1) | 87 comments Spin by Robert Charles Wilson
I'm on chapter 6 of Spin. Besides starting Grass, I've been meaning to get around to starting The Martian as well. Glad to see more people recommending it. Seems to be a hot title recently.

message 1271: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) I'm listening to The Strain on audio- Ron Perlman is a fantastic narrator. I'm also still reading Dust. Even though I'm enjoying it, it's hard for me to find motivation to pick it up and finish it.

message 1272: by Beezlebug (Rob) (new)

Beezlebug (Rob) | 111 comments Reading Influx and listening to The Magicians. The first chapter of Influx almost made me put it down because it immediately jumped into scientific descriptions that felt like reading a high school science book.

message 1273: by Scott (new)

Scott | 130 comments I finished Stardust and now I'm on Mr. Mercedes.

message 1274: by Andreas (last edited Jun 19, 2014 02:12AM) (new)

Andreas | 61 comments Just got my copy of cross-genre anthology Rogues. First story by Joe Abercrombie was awesome and so many are waiting!
Expect me to continuously editing my review.

message 1275: by Larry (last edited Jun 18, 2014 03:09PM) (new)

Larry I'm a few chapters into Cibola Burn, the fourth novel in THE EXPANSE universe. It's just as exciting and as well written as the first three novels in this series. I saw an announcement that there are now contracts for five (!) more books in the series. Normally, I would think that this is just too much ... but in this case, too much is just enough.

message 1276: by Tad (last edited Jul 05, 2014 07:12PM) (new)

Tad (tottman) | 54 comments Just finished The Girl with All the Gifts The Girl with All the Gifts by M.R. Carey by M.R. Carey. Great dystopia. Lives up to the hype.

message 1277: by Scott (new)

Scott Been reading Again, Dangerous Visions, but taking a break.

message 1278: by [deleted user] (new)

I haven't read much sci fi lately, more of a fantasy fan to be honest. Only two sci fi books I've read recently are:

The Little Green Book of Chairman Rahma by Brian Herbert Hollow World by Michael J. Sullivan

And right now I'm reading:

The Time Ships by Stephen Baxter Xenocide (The Ender Quintet, #3) by Orson Scott Card

I'm 60 percent thru it and will finish it up tomorrow...can't put it down! This is my favorite space opera series of this decade--these guys are such talented writers--delighted to know there are more novels on the way...can hardly wait for the tv program to air (2015?)

message 1280: by Andreas (new)

Andreas | 61 comments I'm currently reading last year's Best SF anthology - I write down my impressions here. Will take a while until I reach the last story, though. As usual, there are some great stories in it (like Pat Cadigan's "The Girl-Thing Who Went Out for Sushi") and some... not so good (worst, so far: Jay Lake's The Stars do not Lie).

message 1281: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I've been reading my first Kindle Unlimited "purchase" We'll Go to Coney Island by Barbara Scheiber and listening to Capital in the Twenty-First Century by Thomas Piketty

message 1282: by [deleted user] (new)

Just finished The Time Ships by Stephen Baxter. Absolutely amazing. Nominated for 7 major SFF awards and it deserved every bit of it. I normally don't even consider read spin-offs of classics like this is, but damn am I ever happy I bumped across it.

message 1283: by Scott (new)

Scott Started Battleground by Terry A. Adams, the recent follow-up to her 80s "D'neeran" duology.

message 1284: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I've been reading Clammed Up by Barbara Ross and listening to The Short Victorious War (Honor Harrington, #3) by David Weber .

Kirsten (kmcripn) I've been reading (and listening) to Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

message 1287: by Susan (new)

Susan I just finished The Magician's Land, the final book in Lev Grossman's Magicians trilogy. Most excellent! Before that I read Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie, which just won the Hugo for Best Novel, completing her sweep of a number of major awards. Next I'm into The Eye of the World (The Wheel of Time, Book 1) by Robert Jordan.

Kirsten (kmcripn) Just started Nature's God The Heretical Origins of the American Republic by Matthew Stewart

message 1298: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Just finished reading Arcadian Genesis by Greig Beck. It's not that long, a short novella or a long short story, take your pick. But it's a thrilling introduction to the characters and the series. Sort of a Special Forces X-Files.

Yes, The Martian by Andy Weir was awesome and I've read it a couple of times also. Did you know that they sold the movie rights to Ridley Scott?
