Tad (tottman) | 54 comments Finished The Excalibur Alternative The Excalibur Alternative by David Weber by David Weber. Expanded from a short story with some of the accompanying pitfalls, mainly padding exposition, but great characters, fun story and good action scenes. The sharp twists have to be taken with a grain of salt, but are mostly fun.

Dabbling Madman (musicpowered) I have, "The Order of Deacons", omnibus which is apparently an exclusive Science Fiction Book Club Edition. I didn't know that. Anyhow it's by Philippa Ballantine. The first book in the omnibus called l, "Geist", I have completed and thought was awesome. Having a semi religious order of magic dealing protectors/warriors and having them in pairs where they almost must use their powers in tandem to battle the Ortherside. The Actives and The Sensitives, each with their own magical set of runes and specific abilities. It's got battles, love, odd partnerships and excellent dialog. And that's just the first book. I'm neck deep in,"Spectyre", the second book and its crazy good as well!

Mickey | 623 comments I just finished Neptune's Brood.

It was an excellent book in my fragile human opinion.
Charles Stross over time has gotten better and better in my opinion. The futuristic concepts he presents in his books are most interesting. I would like to think of this book as hard science fiction that obeys the laws of physics to some degree. Laws of biology, those are very interesting concepts also.

My next read is another new book The Beautiful Land.

Several goodreads authors involved in this as writers and editor (Jay Lake). Borrowed the book from the library, so there should be some more readers around soon.

Larry I'm reading, or actually re-reading, Poul Anderson's, The Time Patrol. This collects ten of the eleven short stories about the Time Patrol (what else?). It's as good as when I read it the first time ... about twenty years ago.

I totally agree. It's one of the few hard SF books that kept me up late as I couldn't put it down. I read it last year as an e-book before it was pulled when the indie author received a book deal. It finally is back on Amazon to order. Rumor is that it is going to be made into a movie.

message 1234: by Bob (new)

Bob Lee (boblee333) | 36 comments I read Red Planet Blues by Robert J. Sawyer Red Planet Blues last year and really enjoyed it. The first 75 pages are a great complete short mystery story about the sole private detective in a domed Mars colony trying to solve a disappearance. The rest of the book picks up a few weeks later.

Raymond Mathiesen (raymondmathiesen) | 4 comments Armageddon and the 4th Timeline by Don Mardak
Book Review by Susan McMichael
4.5 out of 5 stars

A thrilling ride from the first page…

Armageddon and the 4th Timeline by Don Mardak is a thrilling ride from the first page. This science fiction novel combines time travel, spiritual themes, a fascinating mix of characters and modern intrigue to create an unputtable down novel.

We meet the CIA Director, Scott Cunningham, a former Navy SEAL, and his Assistant Lori Colbert, addressing a meeting after a terrible terrorists attacks. We also meet husband and wife Kathy and Eric who are in Lhasa, Tibet, on a spiritual quest. Through Eric's time travel, both worlds intersect. Mardak's premise throughout the novel is that there "is a spiritual universe, and mankind has the ability to rise into a higher level of consciousness where all conflicts can be resolved peacefully without resorting to wars, or threatening a nuclear holocaust.”
