Consencus is that GotM is the hardest, and a lot of people find their favorite is Book 2 or 3. They are all crammed full of stuff, though...lol

message 652: by Shari (new)

Shari (shariy) Hi, Maggie. Cramming must be the author's narrative style. With all that stuff in book 1 I wonder if I remember enough to read book 2. Thanks for the heads up!

message 653: by Scott (new)

Scott I started The Windup Girl. I probably won't visit the discussion thread until I've finished, though.

message 654: by Scott (new)

Scott | 130 comments I finished Fool Moon and I started Gil's All Fright Diner this morning. It is off to a good start.

message 655: by Scott (new)

Scott | 130 comments I finished Gil's All Fright Diner and Countdown. Gil's was excellent.

Now I'm reading Patient Zero.

message 656: by Scott (new)

Scott I put down The Windup Girl and started Restoration.

Weenie | 28 comments Voyage of the Elysian, which when I downloaded it was an Amazon freebie.

message 658: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) I finished The War of the Worlds today. I didn't like it very much because of the writing style, but it was a good story other than that. I also appreciate the aspects that make it a classic.

I'm currently reading Nightlife, Warbreaker, and I'm listening to Skinny Dip on audio. I'm on a break from 1Q84 because I only have Nightlife for 14 days (they're both on my Kindle), but I'm still reading that too.

message 659: by Shari (new)

Shari (shariy) I finished Wilson's Spin a few days ago. It was a good read. Creative, gripping, and intriguing. Got some warning about the sequel, though, being not so good. Now thinking if I should read it or not. I'm reading Adam's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy now. Too early to tell if I like it but it has made me chuckle already.

message 660: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 422 comments Yeah, the sequel to Wilson's Spin Trilogy, Axis, isn't half as good as Spin. I don't know about the third part, Vortex as I haven't read it yet.

HI, Jason. Vortex seems to be better than Axis. I would like to see for myself how the books are and read them in the future.

I LOVED Spin! So good! So good! One of the top two books I've read so far this year (along with Old Man's War).

I enjoyed Nightlife and I liked that it had monsters other than your run of the mill vampires, werewolves, etc.

I'm now reading Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency but I haven't gotten too far into it yet.

HI, Jenny. Spin was really a great read. Nightlife sounds interesting. I'll check that one out. Thanks!

I have started Echo by Jack McDevitt.

I have just started to scratch the surface with this and am also at the start of the Culture novels by Iain M Banks

Scott | 130 comments I finished Patient Zero. It was packed full of action.

Now I'm going to read Ready Player One.

message 670: by Kurt (new)

Kurt Reichenbaugh (kurtreichenbaugh) | 35 comments I started to read Slan the other night. I also have Dhalgren that's sitting on my shelf throwing challenging looks my way. I think I'm more in the mood for pulp adventure though right now.

I also have Dhalgren sitting on my bookshelf.

message 672: by Kurt (new)

Kurt Reichenbaugh (kurtreichenbaugh) | 35 comments I've only ever read about 20 pages of Dhalgren. Can't muster the effort yet to go into full board.

message 673: by Beezlebug (Rob) (new)

Beezlebug (Rob) | 111 comments Finished quite a few this month

The Ascendant Stars
The Desert Spear
Exogene
Manhattan In Reverse
The Parasite
Africa Zero
The Talisman
The Disappeared
Robopocalypse

Africa Zero and Robopocalypse (still reading) have been the best surprises. I put them both off for a long time and now I'm wishing I'd gotten to them sooner.

Love me some Van Vogt. Enjoy!

Just finished
Orbitsville by Bob Shaw. When I read this at the age of 12 or 13, it knocked my socks off. Loved the heck out of it. Thirty years later, I'm not quite so impressed. Huge problems with the science are covered up with the vaguest of hand-waving or not at all. There are definite pacing problems. The end is very rushed... but it's still good fun. And I still have a soft spot for a Big Dumb Object.

message 675: by Traci (new)

Traci It's been awhile since I've read science fiction and I'm starving for it. Started Dune. Haven't read this in years. Not as difficult as I remember. And I think, actually I know, I like the world that Herbert created more than his characters. But again the book is called Dune and not Paul or Atreides.

message 676: by Scott (new)

Scott | 130 comments I just finished Ready Player One. I'm on a streak of great books. Hope it doesn't end.

This morning I started The Bottoms.

message 677: by Scott (new)

Scott | 130 comments Having troubles with my electronic version of The Bottoms so I read The Cask of Amontillado and now I'm reading The Rats in the Walls.

message 679: by Traci (new)

Traci Started Spin this morning and already hooked. Just the kind of book I love. I love it when the plot is a jigsaw puzzle that doesn't fit together right away. And I actually like the characters so far. I have a feeling this will end up on my favorites shelf.

message 680: by Jenn (new)

Jenn Thorson (jennthorson) | 34 comments I'm reading the non-fiction "Physics of the Impossible." Because even writing humorous sci-fi, I feel better knowing I've tried to base the info in my books on something reasonably plausible.

message 681: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (steffersdoes) | 16 comments Finishing up The Host at the moment, it was in a free book bin we have at work. I would not advise to spend any kind of money on it. Only finishing it to see how it ends, but the lack of any science or explanation is extremely frustrating. I should have known a Stephanie Meyer book would only be a love story.

On the good book side, I'm in the beginnings of Voyage of the Dead. Very interesting so far, can't wait to see where it goes.

I'm trying to finish The Host too. Very slow going and I'm honestly only sticking with it because I hate giving up on things. I agree with your comment on the science and it also really annoys me how she gives the "souls" human personalities. Like when one of the "souls" called another one 'sweetie.'

message 685: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (steffersdoes) | 16 comments Oh I know. I don't want to spoil anything, I don't know how far you are, I'm almost done now. I've gotten even more frustrated. I get the point that Wanda's species has never experienced a host quite like the humans, and that the emotions they are now feeling are almost making them human in some forms, but she takes it too far. Wanda seems more self righteous
than ever. I just want everyone to somehow die in the end, I don't see how she could make this a triology or series.

message 686: by Don (new)

Don (deeel) | 14 comments Up to page 161 of A Door Into Ocean by Joan Slonczewski. I keep getting distracted from it but I really like it. In fact, I just got 3 other books by her on a special deal.

I'm about 60% through Grey by Jon Armstrong. I really want to love this but it is mostly just tolerable. An interesting world without likable characters. Armstrong's podcast "If You Are Just Joining Us" is one of my favorites. Check it out.

I just finished Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith. Avoid this book. The movie version is coming up so I took the plunge. Ugh, a weak 2 stars. The beginning is ok, thus the 2 stars, but the last third drags on forever, as it meanders having lost all momentum.

message 687: by Baffi (new)

Baffi I've finished The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester a few days ago. I couldn't put it down; it was one hell of a ride, and the ending is just brilliant.

I'll start with Ursula Le Guin's The Lathe of Heaven today and probably The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell afterwards

I have 'The Stars..' sitting right by my bed, waiting for me to crack it, so I am glad to hear it was that good!

message 689: by Traci (new)

Traci Darciana, I liked Stars too. :)

Don, the cover for Lincoln Vampire Hunter keeps trying to tempt me but I hated Pride and Prejudice Zombies and I know to just walk away...

Starting Rendezvous With Rama.

I'm only about 100 pages into it so not very far. This one is going to be added to my pile of "first book in a series that I'm never going to read the next one."

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 372 comments Are they comfortable?

message 697: by Baffi (new)

Baffi I liked Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? much better than "Blade Runner". It's nice to look at (and it has Harrison Ford *coughs*), but for me it was mostly style over substance. I have that issue with most of Ridley Scott's films, though.
