haha yes they feel right at home :P

and J.P, I love Minority Report, I really don't like Tom Cruise, but he does do some good movies. I liked Vanilla Sky as well.

message 702: by Traci (new)

Traci Me too. Don't care for Tom Cruise but Minority Report and Vanilla Sky I loved. Hated, just really hated, War of the Worlds though.

Btw, for me Blade Runner has Rutger Hauer.

I love Rutger Hauer!!! Please tell me you've seen Blind Fury! haha I was disappointed by War of the Worlds too, probably because the story is so near and dear to my heart. Totally off topic, but I love Charles Bronson as well, Death Wish anyone? lol

message 704: by Traci (new)

Traci I have seen a lot of Rutger Hauer movies including Blind Fury. One of my favorite actors. :)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 372 comments Lady Hawk...corny but great.

message 706: by Traci (new)

Traci <3 Ladyhawke.

message 707: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 61 comments @725 - My go-to Charles Bronson movie besides ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST is THE MECHANIC.

message 708: by Traci (new)

Traci I love Bronson, and everyone else, in The Great Escape. Great movie.

As for reading, I'm doing WWW: Wake today. Pretty average so far.

Scott Traci wrote: "As for reading, I'm doing WWW: Wake today. Pretty average so far."

I thought the idea behind it could have been interesting but I found the execution annoying.

Stephanie (steffersdoes) | 16 comments I'm more than half way through Voyage of the Dead, I'm really liking it so far. He's taken a zombie story and given it more perspective. I won't elaborate, saving it for my review :)
Non-fiction wise, I'm reading Discovering Secular Humanism which I'm enoying.

Communities help the individual pursue selfish desires but also help when that individual is in need.

Sheron McCartha (sherimc) Darciana; Lathe of Heaven and The Sparrow. Two powerful books. You may never sleep again. Twenty years later and just yesterday I thought about the Lathe of Heaven, one of my favorites. Finish the Sparrow. I kept wondering why everyone was talking about it and then the ending...pow! I got it and still think about it.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 372 comments There's a sequel to The Sparrow it's Children of God.

I finished "The Lathe of Heaven" yesterday and it blew me away. Wonderful book! Le Guin is now officially one of my all-time favourite authors despite having read only 2 of her books so far. Which is great since there's so much left to look forward to.

That's a great series. One of my favorites. Personally I didn't like the next series in the universe as much.

If you haven't read it I'd recommend Hamilton's 'Nights Dawn Trilogy'. Epic space opera.

Jason (darkfiction) | 422 comments Thanks, Beezlebug!

message 719: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) Most of my reading time has been taken up with The Eye of the World. It's great! I'm in the series for the long haul.

I'm also reading The Rook on my Kindle. I wasn't planning on it but I'm so glad I did! I've been neglecting it because of Eye of The World, but it's so awesome that I really want to rip through the rest of it. Finally I'm listening to Ender's Game on audio.

message 720: by Traci (new)

Traci Reading Flood. It seems okay so far.

message 721: by Jo Ann (new)

Jo Ann | 20 comments Just finished the The Sparrow I still can't get that ending out of my mind and now I'm starting Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 372 comments You probably know this (as here the book is noted to be "The Sparrow 1") but I'll mention it. There is a sequel to Sparrow, Children of God.

Awesome! I finished that up a couple of weeks ago and I'm about a third of the way through Judas Unchained now. Hamilton is now one of my favorite authors.

I think Hamilton might be a brilliant, mad genius! His aliens are some of the most interesting I've read.

I put the Children of God on my tbr list. I totally enjoyed the The Sparrow it was really great writing. My only complaint was I didn't like the way the the aliens acted to much like humans for instance the "club" scene where they all got drunk and arm wrestled it felt silly to me.

I agree! He has a new novel coming out at the end of the year, called "Great North Road" :-)

message 727: by Nathan (new)

Nathan Douglas (ditkanate) Just started reading The Door into Summer at my father's recommendation. He says it goes to freaky places plot-wise. So now i'm curious what that might mean to him. Maybe I'll learn something about my father. I already like Pete the cat.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 372 comments It's a good book.May start you off on a Heinlein quest if you haven't already read a lot of his. I find him hot and cold, but some I like a lot.

message 729: by Nathan (new)

Nathan Douglas (ditkanate) I really haven't read much Heinlein other than Stranger in a Strange Land, which I enjoyed. Not sure why. I can't for the life of me remember if I read Starship Troopers. I'm hoping I enjoy it. It's always fun to go on an author bender & rip off a bunch of books in a row.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 372 comments I found Heinlein back in the '60s (that's 1960s not 1860s...Heinlein wasn't writing then...). Starship Troopers is another I like. There are a group of books that were called his "teen reads" those are good/ You mentioned The Door into Summer. There's so many more Tunnel in the Sky***The Puppet Masters***Sixth Column***Glory Road and dozens more. He was a prolific and talented writer. I find I like some and not others but I'd say definitely don't miss his work.

Jaime | 61 comments On deck for me are THE THIRD POLICEMAN by Flann O'Brien - it got name-checked in Grant Morrison's INVISIBLES (which I loved) so I thought I'd give it a whirl - and DISTRUST THAT PARTICULAR FLAVOR, an oddly titled collection of William Gibson's non-fiction writings. I'd read a fair number of them when they originally appeared in Wired, Rolling Stone and the like, but it's nice to have them all in one tidy package.

message 733: by Scott (new)

Scott | 130 comments I finished Sandstorm and Material Witness.

I am currently reading Mile 81 and I should be able to finish that on the way home so that I can start The Wind Through the Keyhole tonight.

message 734: by Traci (new)

Traci Reading Dune Messiah. Started with low expectations but I'm really liking it. Has alot of the characterization I thought was missing in Paul from the the first book. And answering questions I had too.

Beezlebug (Rob) | 111 comments Trying to finish The Games tonight or tomorrow so I can start The Wind Through the Keyhole. Listening to Black House

Scott I've started Signal to Noise.

message 739: by [deleted user] (new)

Finished up Judas Unchained last night, going to finish up Manhattan In Reverse today, then I don't know what's next. I have four books on deck that I really want to read:

The Dreaming Void
The Cold Commands
KOP
Armored

Started A Fire Upon the Deep for this months read....very different from what I expected! I guess I dont know what I was expecting, the book is just different!

message 744: by Nathan (new)

Nathan Douglas (ditkanate) Maggie wrote: "Started A Fire Upon the Deep for this months read....very different from what I expected! I guess I dont know what I was expecting, the book is just different!" Yeah that book is kinda nuts, but enjoyable. Really liked some of the aliens in that one.

message 745: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 61 comments The 'prequel' to A FIRE UPON THE DEEP - A DEEPNESS IN THE SKY - is about the Qeng Ho trading fleet and their dealings with another space faring faction of humans who are deeply creepy as well as another typically Vinge-ean, idiosyncratically drawn alien race. Needless to say, I really dug it. I can't wait to read THE CHILDREN OF THE SKY, which looks to be a true sequel to A FIRE...

Jaime, you'll have to let us know what you think of Children when you read it. I've loved all of Vinge's novels and was really looking forward to that sequel. I was thoroughly disappointed.

message 747: by Shari (new)

Shari (shariy) I wanted to read the current book being discussed here, but sadly I don't have a copy. I have Footfall, though, which was nominated at one of the polls. I've read a quarter of it already and still cannot decide if I like it. The aliens appeared right away and then disappeared for more than a hundred pages. When they did again the story has been filled with so many characters. I'm still trying to figure out what the alien invaders are like. Still a bit confusing at this point. I wonder if it's only me but I find the narrative style to be having contrasting tones sometimes. Is it because it has two authors? I found the same thing in a couple of Stephen King's novels which he wrote with other writers.

message 748: by Traci (new)

Traci Axis. After my complete love affair for Spin and hearing from others that the second book is not as good I am so far pleasantly surprised.

message 749: by Jason (new)
