A Voracious Reader (a.k.a. Carol) (avidreader68) Eddard (12) – Sansa (15)

1. We've had a lot of speculation about Jon's parentage. Robert was with Ned the year he was away and mentions Wylla - Jon's mother. What do you think of this new development? If Wylla is Jon's mother then who was Ashara to Ned? Could it be that he had more than one affair?

I’m not quite sure what to believe, but Eddard seems to be honorable and for him to cheat seems out of character. I think his unwillingness to speak about Wylla or Ashara is because he’s trying to keep Jon’s parentage a secret and the less said the better.

2. We finally find out that Rhaegar did rape Lyanna. Does this change anything for you?

It explains Robert’s rage and could explain Jon’s parentage. Need more info.

3. Ned advises Robert that "no one man should hold both the East and West". Do you think this could be foreshadowing something? Or is it just advice?

Oh yes, a foreshadowing for sure. Those Lannisters are vile, sneaky, wily and treacherous. The only loyalty they feel is to the Lannisters. Robert is a blind buffoon.

4. Does it surprise you to find out how Jaime Lannister got his nickname of Kingslayer? Also, what about Ned finding Jaime sitting on the Iron Throne?

No, not surprised. Jaime sitting on the throne is where the Lannisters want him, just not at that time. However, the pieces are moving to put him there and soon. It wouldn’t surprise me if Joffrey is Jaime’s son.

5. What do you think about the young boys called "Rapers" being taken to the Wall? Does it shock you?

It did surprise me. It didn’t occur to me that criminals would be given a choice of the Wall or Justice.

6. Does this sentence say anything important about the Lannisters? "The Lannisters took what was offered" (120). Think about it in reference to what Ned said about Jaime sitting on the throne. Does it change anything about Jaime Lannister?

They’re opportunists. It changes nothing about Jaime. He is a dangerous enemy of anyone not a Lannister.

7. What do you think of the bond between Jon and Tyrion?

It’s interesting. I want to see more of their interaction.

8. Who do you think the man was, who was sent to Bran's room? Who do you think sent him? Why?

The man was a hired ‘gun’. Either one or both of the twins, Jaime & Cersei, hired him.

9. Many have shown dislike for Theon Grayjoy, how do you feel about him being allowed to hear what Catelyn has to say about the Lannisters?

I don’t like it. I don’t trust him.

10. Even after 15 years Catelyn does not consider herself to be a Stark. She tells Robb to stay at Winterfell because "there must always be a Stark at Winterfell" (137). Why do you think Catelyn chooses to exclude herself from being a Stark?

She hates it there. She may not consider herself to be a Stark because she is so different from them, too.

11. Is it significant that the "wilder" children look like Starks and the "tamer" children look like Tullys? Why?

I don’t see the significance yet. But then again, I’m not always good at picking things up in a first reading.

12. What do you think about the fight between Arya and Joffrey? What kind of repercussions do you think will follow?

Oh, boy! He got his arse kicked by a little girl and then bit by a direwolf. Arya has made herself an enemy of the Lannisters. Not good!

Rosina | 1800 comments I am still trying to catch up on the reading...I am two days behind...(I think?)..Will try to be caught soon....

All your comments are really making this wonderful reading for me....

Couple of things...

1)I keep relating the Others to the Druids
2)Not sure of the significance of the dragon eggs...but I like the comment about the Trueblood awakening them...that would be cool
3)Was thinking that Dany was going to have an awful first time experience but turns out he (cant remember his name just his braid with bells) was actually very considerate
4)Just gotta say I really dont like Cstelyn what a b*tch to Jon....I agree that he has to get over being a bastard...
5)Viscious Viserys now that kid needs to have his face slapped by Tyrion

Ok back to reading to catch up...i'm on Eddard Ch 12

A Voracious Reader (a.k.a. Carol) (avidreader68) Questions for Chapter 16 (Eddard) - Chapter 19 (Jon)

1. Gah! They killed Lady and then Micah. I thought Micah would get off with just punishment not death. Did anyone see that coming? Wonder where Nymeria is? I love how the wolves are so smart.

Wow! I was blown away by both deaths. The direwolves are very smart and I hope Nymeria is hiding nearby. Sansa is a useless twit in my opinion and the loss of her direwolf may not affect any outcome powerwise.

2. Thoughts on Bran's dreams before he woke up? Do you think he'll remember everything? Do you think it was a dream or will he now see things? Could he have the same powers as Varys whom Catelyn referred to as a spider?

Crows in mythology are harbingers of doom, messengers and soothsayers. The crow with 3 eyes, combined with what Bran saw and then the pain in his forehead where his third eye would be suggests he’s going to have some seer abilities. In a sense he’ll be able to fly since he won’t be able to walk or climb anymore. I hope he does remember and soon enough to help his father. After this chapter I’m beginning to believe Bran is going to play a large role in the outcome of this deadly chess game.

3. Do you think the Lannisters went to the wall so they could keep an eye on Bran's situation without being obvious? Why did they go to the wall in the first place?

I don’t think that’s why Tyrion went to the Wall. I think he reads a lot of history books, he hears a lot of stories and he may think something is coming from the other side of the Wall and wanted to see for himself since he was already almost there.

4. After hearing about the Dagger being Tyrion's do you suspect he's more involved with his siblings plans then you may have previously thought?

I think one of the twins (my bet is Jaime) lifted the dagger and Tyrion may not even realize it’s gone. Or, he may know it’s gone and figured his brother took it for betting against him. Either way, I think the use of a dagger that Tyrion won is not only a red herring, but a finger pointing right at Tyrion as the culprit.

5. Do you think Catelyn was wise to leave home?

Not really, but she didn’t have much choice.

6. So what are your thoughts on the mantra "Winter is coming"? What do you think it means? Could it be another way of saying be prepared?

In Winter you have to be prepared or die. I like the saying.

7. Do you think it was a mistake for Jon to come to the Wall?

No. I think Jon is where he needs to be.

8. Initial thoughts of Donal Noye and the advice and the information he gave Jon?

It’s good advice and information and it needed to be said to Jon. He may be a bastard but he’s been pretty protected by being brought up in a castle. He’s much better prepared to handle life outside the castle in some ways and in others he has a lot to learn.

9. Jon made an enemy. That cannot be good. Any thoughts on what Ser Alliser will do?

Make Jon’s life Hell.

10. Do you think Tyrion is a "nice" guy or is he hoping to turn Jon against his family?

I think Tyrion is for Tyrion. Though I think he’s beginning to like Jon.

11. Bran named his wolf Summer. Does this mean he'll have something to do with them getting through whatever terrible events are coming?

Summer always follows Winter. I think Bran will be the lynchpin of this whole tale.

A Voracious Reader (a.k.a. Carol) (avidreader68) OH, OH!! What if Lyanna's 'Promise me' wasn't JUST about taking her back to Winterfell? Why would that bring such relief to her eyes when he did promise? What if she wanted Eddard to claim Jon as his own and NOT tell Robert the baby was Rhaegar's because she knew Robert wanted ALL the Targaryns dead? That would include her own son, Jon.

Eddard is an extremely honorable man and even if Catelyn was first promised to his brother, when he married her she was his Lady wife. She may not have been his choice of bride, but once he was married he honored his vows. Just my opinion of him, but I wouldn't be surprised or disappointed if he did cheat on her. She was meant for his brother as was Winterfell and he didn't ask for either. However, his anger over questions about Jon's mother seem unreasonable. It's like he's stuck between a rock and a hard place. Protect his sister's child (which means lying for 14 yrs) while having his honor besmirched. Makes an honorable man a might testy, mayhap?

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments #3 - This thought/question has been fermenting in my brain... Did Tyrion go to the Wall to establish an alibi? Maybe he was already going there b/f Bran was pushed; I’ll have to check. But, then again, maybe Jaime took his dagger b/c he knew he had an alibi (otherwise, setting him up looks as if he is not so fond of Tyrion).

A Voracious Reader (a.k.a. Carol) (avidreader68) @Lisarenee ~ It's possible! :D You guys got me thinking about this and now I've picked it up and run away with it. LOL

@Lisa Kay ~ "It is King Robert who keeps saying she was raped, not Ned."

This is true. I went back and read the two sections where Lyanna is mentioned and Eddard doesn't deny or confirm Robert's statements. Maybe she was raped or maybe she loved Rhaegar and not Robert. She was to be Robert's wife, but maybe she didn't want to be. Robert's feelings for Lyanna seem more an obsession than true love. Eddard said he loved her with all his heart, but Robert had loved her even more. How is it possible to love someone more than with all your heart unless it is an obsession?

Sarah Dizon (sarahd828) | 380 comments 1. Gah! They killed Lady and then Micah. I thought Micah would get off with just punishment not death. Did anyone see that coming? Wonder where Nymeria is? I love how the wolves are so smart.

I'm sure Arya hid out with Nymeria and then put her some where when she knew she was going to be caught. As for Mycah, I think that's very sad. I believe he only died because he ran because of what the Hound said.

2. Thoughts on Bran's dreams before he woke up? Do you think he'll remember everything? Do you think it was a dream or will he now see things? Could he have the same powers as Varys whom Catelyn referred to as a spider?

I am intrigued by his dream. Especially, because he could see everyone and everything that was going on. Maybe it's a clue into the fact, that since he won't be able to walk he will be able to observe everyone. I think subconsciously he knows he saw something he shouldn't have but I don't know if he'll ever have the ability to tell anyone. I don't know if he'll have visions now or if it was a one time thing. I think he would be very interesting if he started having visions, it would explain how he saw everyone.

3. Do you think the Lannisters went to the wall so they could keep an eye on Bran's situation without being obvious? Why did they go to the wall in the first place?

I don't know how close the Wall is to Winterfell so I don't believe that the has anything to do with it. Maybe they wanted to do some scouting. Ned's brother Benjen works on the Wall so maybe they want to keep tabs on all of the Starks. Including Jon.

4. After hearing about the Dagger being Tyrion's do you suspect he's more involved with his siblings plans then you may have previously thought?

I don't see Tyrion being that ruthless. Maybe it was a set up by Jaime? Could it be that someone took the dagger from Tyrion and gave it to the assassin in order to frame Tyrion? The assassin didn't see very smart so he might not have known who he was talking to.

5. Do you think Catelyn was wise to leave home?

I think Catelyn should have stayed and sent someone she trusted. The safest place for her would have been at Winterfell and I believe Robb is too young to go by himself.

6. So what are your thoughts on the mantra "Winter is coming"? What do you think it means? Could it be another way of saying be prepared?

I think it exemplifies everything the Starks stand for. Ned can he as ruthless and strong as winter so it could be a personification of the Starks but also they are way more capable to survive Winter than any of the other Houses.

7. Do you think it was a mistake for Jon to come to the Wall?

I think he should have thought more before going to the Wall. I understand he felt desperate to belong somewhere and make a place for himself but I don't think he knew what it meant to be on the Wall.

8. Initial thoughts of Donal Noye and the advice and the information he gave Jon?

I'm a little unsure how I feel about Donal Noye's advice. But it was true. The only way Jon will survive the Wall is to maintain a low profile. If he makes the wrong people mad there is nothing stopping them from killing him. He's only a young boy and he has no real important position in any family (just like anyone else on the Wall).

9. Jon made an enemy. That cannot be good. Any thoughts on what Ser Alliser will do?

I'm sure there will be a way for Ser Alliser to torment Jon but I'm not sure what kind of actions could be taken.

10. Do you think Tyrion is a "nice" guy or is he hoping to turn Jon against his family?

He might have an alternate plan but I believe underneath whatever his family stands for he is a nice guy. He helped Jon and he reprimanded Joffrey. Yet, it could be possible that he really is just working for his family.

11. Bran named his wolf Summer. Does this mean he'll have something to do with them getting through whatever terrible events are coming?

I definitely think it's important because it was the first words he said when he woke up. Maybe it's something to keep them looking forward. If they focus on Summer coming again then they can have a chance of making it through Winter even though Winter can last generations.

Tuğçe Gökırmak (tugcenidasevin) | 157 comments Sarah's Questions for Chapter Eddard (12) through Chapter Sansa (15)

1. We've had a lot of speculation about Jon's parentage. Robert was with Ned the year he was away and mentions Wylla - Jon's mother. What do you think of this new development? If Wylla is Jon's mother then who was Ashara to Ned? Could it be that he had more than one affair?
It feels like Ned is deliberately keeping it secret and confusing and this gave me the impression of there is somethingelse beyond just cheating. And as I already mentioned, it will be a really good twist.

2. We finally find out that Rhaegar did rape Lyanna. Does this change anything for you?
It was something already hinted or at least things and discussions over here led me think that so this just made it a fact for me. Maybe Jon is Lyanna's after all...

3. Ned advises Robert that "no one man should hold both the East and West". Do you think this could be foreshadowing something? Or is it just advice?
Almost everything is foreshadowing something in this story so it probably is but can't be certain, it seems to me like an advice but then he is trying to warn the King about Lannister's intentions.

4. Does it surprise you to find out how Jaime Lannister got his nickname of Kingslayer? Also, what about Ned finding Jaime sitting on the Iron Throne?
Not surprised, that's probably what Lannisters want and intent. And I can't believe Robert wants to be so blind.

5. What do you think about the young boys called "Rapers" being taken to the Wall? Does it shock you?
It did surprise me as until that moment the nightwatchers sounded quite noble guards of the walls.

6. Does this sentence say anything important about the Lannisters? "The Lannisters took what was offered" (120). Think about it in reference to what Ned said about Jaime sitting on the throne. Does it change anything about Jaime Lannister?
I don't think that changes anything about him, I think he believes Lannisters are above all others and he is dangerous to anyone who is not Lannister.

7. What do you think of the bond between Jon and Tyrion?
Tyrion seems quite wise, not sure why he is interested or interacting with Jon the way he is. I would like to see what he is planning though.

8. Who do you think the man was, who was sent to Bran's room? Who do you think sent him? Why?
I think, he was sent either by the Queen or his brother to make sure Bran doesn't live.

9. Many have shown dislike for Theon Grayjoy, how do you feel about him being allowed to hear what Catelyn has to say about the Lannisters?
I don't think I know enough about him to trust or not to, but I am a little surprised how easily Starks share the secret letter or the dagger, it seems to me, they trust quite easily.

10. Even after 15 years Catelyn does not consider herself to be a Stark. She tells Robb to stay at Winterfell because "there must always be a Stark at Winterfell" (137). Why do you think Catelyn chooses to exclude herself from being a Stark?
Actually this statement, didn't make me think that she doesn't consider herself a Stark but more like she was referring a Stark man to rule Winterfell. She is a woman after all and in those times I don't think women have a lot of status.

11. Is it significant that the "wilder" children look like Starks and the "tamer" children look like Tullys? Why?
Oh, I haven't noticed that, I only thought about how Arya and Jon looked alike.

12. What do you think about the fight between Arya and Joffrey? What kind of repercussions do you think will follow?
Just what The Queen would like, somewhere to hit Ned hard. The Lannisters were not very fond of Starks even before that so probably this can't be a really good thing for Starks. And I am quite happy that Joffrey's (can't really stand him) got what he needed, kicked by a little girl and bitten by a direwolf, but really sorry for Micah.

message 215: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Dizon (sarahd828) | 380 comments So I've been thinking and what I'm thinking is this:

Catelyn was supposed to marry Brandon Stark but he died so Ned offered to marry Catelyn instead. This was very common and not unusual in that time period. However, that doesn't mean that Ned necessarily wanted to marry Catelyn. While he was away with Robert maybe he fell in love with Wylla and when she had Jon, Ned decided to take him. It could be possible that Wylla died during childbirth. Also, it would explain why Ned is so ashamed; not only did he have an affair but he also loved the other woman. It explains why he doesn't want to talk about her and why he doesn't want anyone to know about her. He married Catelyn out of duty but he didn't necessarily love her. It is possible that he loves her now after being married for 15 years. I also find that there is something unusual about the relationship that Catelyn has with Petyr. Maybe she loved Petyr when they were younger?

Those are just my thoughts on it. I don't think Jon is Ned's nephew.

Rosina | 1800 comments Questions for Chapter 16 (Eddard) - Chapter 19 (Jon)

1. Gah! They killed Lady and then Micah. I thought Micah would get off with just punishment not death. Did anyone see that coming? Wonder where Nymeria is? I love how the wolves are so smart.

I was surprised about this. I thought perhaps that Mycah and Ayra would be grounded but nothing as brutal as Mycah's death. I really hope that Nymeria is safe. I too was glad to see confirmation that Ned is a nice guy because of his treatment of the killing of Lady.

2. Thoughts on Bran's dreams before he woke up? Do you think he'll remember everything? Do you think it was a dream or will he now see things? Could he have the same powers as Varys whom Catelyn referred to as a spider?
I think his dream was a vision. He was being shown the vast empire that he one day will rule. The pecking of the third eye could mean that he will have an enhanced ability to foresee.

3. Do you think the Lannisters went to the wall so they could keep an eye on Bran's situation without being obvious? Why did they go to the wall in the first place?
Nope dont think that. Tyrion went I think because of his curiousity about the wall and history. I was surprised at how big the wall was. I have kept relating the wall to Hadrians wall between Scotland and England.

4. After hearing about the Dagger being Tyrion's do you suspect he's more involved with his siblings plans then you may have previously thought?
No I dont think so. I know Tyrion does like Jaime but I dont think he would hire an assassin to take out Bran to save his brother or sister. I think he is being framed.

5. Do you think Catelyn was wise to leave home? Interesting that previously she wouldnt leave Brans side but then after some rest she decides to up and leave. I dont think she could have sent anyone else.

6. So what are your thoughts on the mantra "Winter is coming"? What do you think it means? Could it be another way of saying be prepared?
I think it means that someone (and I am leaning towards Bran) for the Starks will become king. their motto is winter is coming.

7. Do you think it was a mistake for Jon to come to the Wall?
No it was what he wanted to do. Catelyn obviously didnt want him around at Winterfell. So I think he is trying to find himself and thinks that by being a member of the Black Watch that he can become honourable and erase the stigma of being a baastard.

8. Initial thoughts of Donal Noye and the advice and the information he gave Jon?
I think it is advice that will come in handy for Jon.

9. Jon made an enemy. That cannot be good. Any thoughts on what Ser Alliser will do?
I think Ser Allsiter is going to be an enemy of Jon's no doubt and could possibly get other men to go against Jon.

10. Do you think Tyrion is a "nice" guy or is he hoping to turn Jon against his family?
I like to think that Tyrion is a nice guy. I dont think he is trying to turn Jon against his family, I think he is just making Jon aware of how life is or can be with someone who is considered different from the rest.

11. Bran named his wolf Summer. Does this mean he'll have something to do with them getting through whatever terrible events are coming? Not sure why he named his wolf Summer. The survival of the wolves will have something to do with this story. Maybe summer because that is a sign of propersity. Dont really know.

Vi | 1758 comments Questions for Chapter 20 (Eddard) to Chapter 23 (Daenrys)

1. The treasury is more than 6 millions in debt . Did that surprise you? What do you think are its implications? Do you think that it is really 6 million in debt or was it made out to be to that amount?

2. Based on the chapters so far, what is your opinion of Robert? Were you able to get a handle on him?

3. Do you think the Starks were wise in trusting Littlefinger? Does Littlefinger still think of Catelyn favorably?

4. Do you think that the North and the Wall with its beyond is being taken too lightly? Due to the long summer, have people forgotten about it? What do you think of Mormont's request?

5. Tyrion's leaving the watch. Have you any idea/theory behind Tyrion's journey? Is it to analyze the strength/weakness of the Night watch if in case of war?

6. Jon seems to have heeded Tyrion's and Donal Noye's advice. And after Bran's news, he seems to have matured a bit. We also learn that Ben is also missing. And Jon's statement also seems to be some kind of omen. Has anything happened to Ben? Will Jon have to go after him?

7. Ned's advice to Arya is full of wisdom. Arya seems to understand that but what about Sansa? Will Arya and Sansa ever reconcile?

8. I was surprised when Ned had Arya taught "dancing" lessons. Were you surprised? Looks like this will shape Arya and Sansa's future. Agree or Disagree?

9. Oh Boy, I knew Dany would be ass-kicker if only given the chance. And Vicious had got what was coming to him. What do you think of that incident? Do you think that Dany will have a greater role as time goes on? Especially given the last scene in the chapter where Dany takes command?

10. Man, looks like the eggs might just turn viable. Are we going to see dragons? Does this have any significance more with Dany as the one who might "Wake" the dragon? Such an interesting possibility, isn't it?

11. And looks like Dany is pregnant (As an aside, so soon???). What will be the significance of the baby? And with the dragon egg on the other side as well?

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Questions for Chapter 20 (Eddard) to Chapter 23 (Daenrys)

1. The treasury is more than 6 millions in debt. Did that surprise you? What do you think are its implications? Do you think that it is really 6 million in debt or was it made out to be to that amount?

I think it's in debt 6 million. Think the King was the wrong person to take charge of the 7 Kingdoms. I think the Lannisters will use this to their advantage.

2. Based on the chapters so far, what is your opinion of Robert? Were you able to get a handle on him?

I don't think too much about him. Seems he hates authority and treats the kingdom like his playground. He's not worthy of his title, but I'm hoping he's still a good person inside.

3. Do you think the Starks were wise in trusting Littlefinger? Does Littlefinger still think of Catelyn favorably?

I think for Catelyn he'd still do anything, but if he thought he could get her away from Eddard for himself he'd do whatever he had to. I think this is one character we need to keep our eye on.

4. Do you think that the North and the Wall with its beyond is being taken too lightly? Due to the long summer, have people forgotten about it? What do you think of Mormont's request?

I think Mormont is wise and the request is reasonable, but I do think the summer's been too long and people have forgotten the reason for the wall. Winter IS coming. Dang! You know I'm going to start walking around saying that, right?

5. Tyrion's leaving the watch. Have you any idea/theory behind Tyrion's journey? Is it to analyze the strength/weakness of the Night watch if in case of war?

Can you imagine if Catelyn is home when Tyrion makes his way there? He didn't seem in a big hurry to get to Bran so I think he didn't have anything to do with the murder attempt. I think his trip was out of curiosity. His one and only chance to see the Wall.

The odds are not in Benjen's favor that he'll be okay. I think he's a zombie now.

7. Ned's advice to Arya is full of wisdom. Arya seems to understand that but what about Sansa? Will Arya and Sansa ever reconcile?

i wonder if that is the significance of Sansa's direwolf dying? Perhaps her bethroval will mark the end of her being considered a Stark?

8. I was surprised when Ned had Arya taught "dancing" lessons. Were you surprised? Looks like this will shape Arya and Sansa's future. Agree or Disagree?

I think Dany and Ayra could end up great friends. Yes and no to the surprise. Surprised he gave in so quickly, but I think he knows she may need the added protection.

9. Oh Boy, I knew Dany would be ass-kicker if only given the chance. And Vicious had got what was coming to him. What do you think of that incident? Do you think that Dany will have a greater role as time goes on? Especially given the last scene in the chapter where Dany takes command?

I think she'll be the leader.

10. Man, looks like the eggs might just turn viable. Are we going to see dragons? Does this have any significance more with Dany as the one who might "Wake" the dragon? Such an interesting possibility, isn't it?

Yes. Love the pun.

11. And looks like Dany is pregnant (As an aside, so soon???). What will be the significance of the baby? And with the dragon egg on the other side as well?

Another child with it's sigil alive in the truest sense. Sounded like the dire wolves were extinct before the Starks stumbled upon the dead mom and pups.

SandyC (sandyc88) | 1193 comments I am late to the party. I've been watching the HBO show,so I'm afraid that is coloring my reading experience quite a bit.

Lisarenee's Questions for Chapters 4(Eddard) - 7(Arya)

1. We now know what was so significant about how the direwolf was killed. The fact the antler was the means of death suggests the King, whose symbol is an antler, must somehow cause the death of Eddard (aka Ned) leaving his children orphans. The question is should this be seen as a warning as to what could happen or a prophecy of what is to come? What do you think? Knowing what could happen can the outcome be changed?

The number of pups equaled the number of Stark children, so certainly one could speculate the Stark children will become orphans. However, I didn't speculate that the direwolf's death was a prophecy, just a random act in nature. I could be proven wrong, naturally!

2. Knowing how close the King and Ned were do you think Catelyn was right to encourage her husband to become the King's Hand?

Catelyn believes it would be a grave mistake for Ned to turn down Robert's request. The King's Hand is the second most powerful position in the kingdom, why wouldn't she want her husband to hold that honor? This would ensure that her family is at peace with he ruling family and will pave the way for her children to also hold positions of honor

3. Do you think Jon Snow's jealousy of his siblings trueborn siblings will cause trouble in the future?

I didn't get the impression that he was jealous, more like he accepted his lot in life and was trying to deal with it the best way he could. I like his relationship with Arya.

4. Were you surprised that Catelyn would ask that Jon either go with her husband or become one of the brother's of the Night's Watch?

I can't help but let the TV show color this answer. In the show, Catelyn clearly resents Jon. This is made obvious in the first scenes of episode 1

5. Wall are usually put up for a reason. Any ideas as to why the Wall was put up thousands of years ago? Do you suspect it had something to do with the Others? What do you the the Others are?

Walls are build to keep out enemies, so I suspect that's why this one was built. The Others are inhuman and ghostly according to the prologue. The characters say "may the Others take you" as if they believe the Others are real entities.

6. What do you think of Tyrion's advice to Jon? "Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armor yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you."

Tyrion is one of my favorite characters. He has learned to embrace his shortcomings and use his wit as a weapon. He understands what Jon is going through and knows that longing for what you can't have or what you will never be will only bring heartache.

7. What character(s) do you find the most interesting so far?

Tyrion, Arya, Dany

8. Thoughts on why the Lannisters would want to get rid of Jon Arryn and then foster his son?

He knows a big secret that, if the King finds out, would destroy them.

9. Sounds like Rhaegor did something to Ned's sister. Any thoughts on what that was?
-----

Lisa Kay’s Questions for Bran(8) – Daenerys(11)

1) Before you found out what happened, were you apprehensive about Bran climbing all over Winterfall, especially when you discovered he was crawling the outer walls fraught with loose mortar? Did his direwolf cub’s growl cause you to have a sense of impending doom?

Saw the show so knew what what would happen

2) Did it take you long to figure out who the man and woman were whom Bran overheard? Did you surmise both their identities at the same time, or just one?

I tried reading this as if I didn't know. The man kept calling her sister, so you could tell they were siblings. It seems like I wouldn't have known until the queen was identified. Then it would be hard to reconcile that she is with her brother incestuosly since that is so offputting.

3) We learn from their dialogue that these two wished the King ill; did you think eavesdropping was an effective way to learn this? “That frighten cow shared Jon Arryn’s bed.” What do you deduce from this statement?

Eavesdropping was a very effective way to learn this since we haven't seen the story from Cersei's or Jaime's point of view. The statement says they have no respect for Lysa and that she probably knows the secret that Jon Arryn knew.

4) Since Bran is a POV character in this story, it would be surprising if he died so early in the story; therefore, what condition do you think he will be in after the push? (Any comments about the push?)

The push was shocking. I don't think we really had the sense that Jaime and Cersei were so coldhearted up until this point. Also, since Bran is a child, they probably could have used threats to keep him quiet instead of trying to kill him.

5) Were you surprised Tyrion slapped Prince Joffrey not once, but twice? What do you think his reasons were for emphatically insisting Prince Joffrey put aside his contemptuous attitude and seek out Lord and Lady Stark?

Love, love, love this scene, in the book and show! I think Tyrion wants Joffrey to show respect to his future in-laws and show that he has good character. This will ensure he is respected and has favorable political allies when he inherits Robert's kingdom.

6) How much do you think Tyrion knows about the secrets of Queen Cersei and her twin, Ser Jaime, the Kingslayer?

It seems like he knows everything; at least, he appears to be keeping a secret.

I am loving the theory that Jon is Lyanna's son. I didn't even remotely suspect that until you insightful readers put it out there! It really is hard to picture Ned cheating on Cat, even though it was common and expected during the time of the novel. Heck, the King openly cheats on Cersei and no one says a word. But what would happen to her if the King finds out she is not only cheating, but with her twin brother (eew!)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Lisa Kay’s Answers to Vi’s Questions for Chapter 20 (Eddard) to Chapter 23 (Daenrys)

1. The treasury is more than 6 million in debt. Did that surprise you? What do you think are its implications? Do you think that it is really 6 million in debt or was it made out to be to that amount?
It did surprise me – a lot! $$$ When I read that they owed the Lannisters, I thought there might be some slight-of-hand with the books and/or skimming going on.

2. Based on the chapters so far, what is your opinion of Robert? Were you able to get a handle on him?
I’m very much afraid that Ned’s misgivings are going to pan out; Robert has become a King ripe for plundering.

3. Do you think the Starks were wise in trusting Littlefinger? Does Littlefinger still think of Catelyn favorably?
Man-oh-man! He sure is cynical; I can’t tell yet. It is confusing for me b/c Ned doesn’t like him (and I like Ned). Yes, I think he not only cares for “Cat”, but still has the “hots” for her too.

4. Do you think that the North and the Wall with its beyond is being taken too lightly? Due to the long summer, have people forgotten about it? What do you think of Mormont's request?
Yup. Definitely! Ahhh…b/c it’s been awhile since the Winter years? Could be. That is what happened between WWI and WWII. I think Mormont's request is reasonable; Tyrion may see the day he regrets he couldn’t carry a stronger message back.

5. Tyrion's leaving the watch. Have you any idea/theory behind Tyrion's journey? Is it to analyze the strength/weakness of the Night watch if in case of war?
Hummm… don’t know. Hadn’t really thought of that.

Yes, Jon is growing up. Something bad has happened to Ben; Jon will look for him and find him dead – or some trace of him that indicates he’s dead, or maybe delirious like Gared at the beginning.

7. Ned's advice to Arya is full of wisdom. Arya seems to understand that but what about Sansa? Will Arya and Sansa ever reconcile?
Yes, I loved that scene between Ned and Arya. Ned has had a lot to digest and is more conscientious after hearing about Bran’s protective direwolf; it definitely influenced him. I don’t think Arya and Sansa will ever come to an understanding until, maybe, the end of one of their lives. I see Sansa as pretty much an observer, without much influence, now that her direwolf is dead.

8. I was surprised when Ned had Arya taught "dancing" lessons. Were you surprised? Looks like this will shape Arya and Sansa's future. Agree or Disagree?
I was nicely surprised. Ayra’s future, certainly.

9. Oh Boy, I knew Dany would be ass-kicker if only given the chance. And Vicious had got what was coming to him. What do you think of that incident? Do you think that Dany will have a greater role as time goes on? Especially given the last scene in the chapter where Dany takes command?
Yes, Vicious got a small taste of his just desserts. I think we are witnessing Queen Daenerys in the making, which is super neat. I was thrilled over the love-making scene.

10. Man, looks like the eggs might just turn viable Are we going to see dragons? Does this have any significance more with Dany as the one who might "Wake" the dragon? Such an interesting possibility, isn't it?
Yes, I think you are right and the eggs are viable ! Yes, dragons! I don’t know if it will be b/c the moon hits the sun, although I liked that story. Yes, Dany is going to “wake” them – but how? With heat, most likely? Very interesting, indeed!

11. And looks like Dany is pregnant (As an aside, so soon???). What will be the significance of the baby? And with the dragon egg on the other side as well?
Not surprised she’s pregnant. I’m waiting to see how the baby will play into it; I’m betting Khal Drogo is a good (and proud) father though. Do you mean the dragon egg on the other side of the tent while they were making love – or it just being present in her tent while she’s pregnant? Hummm… Hadn’t considered that; don’t know. You could be onto something here, Vi.

Tuğçe Gökırmak (tugcenidasevin) | 157 comments Questions for Chapter 16 (Eddard) - Chapter 19 (Jon)

1. Gah! They killed Lady and then Micah. I thought Micah would get off with just punishment not death. Did anyone see that coming? Wonder where Nymeria is? I love how the wolves are so smart.
I was really shocked to hear about Micah, actually couldn't believe myself first. I mean, I knew Lannisters were brutal but that was kind of too much. Now that I read a little further I know about Nymeria, I was still sure Arya did her best for the wolves sake. And Nymeria is so smart and very much like her owner, I hope she will be fine.

2. Thoughts on Bran's dreams before he woke up? Do you think he'll remember everything? Do you think it was a dream or will he now see things? Could he have the same powers as Varys whom Catelyn referred to as a spider?
I don't think it was just a dream, though I am not sure about his powers being same as Varys. I am just sure he will have some very important role in the story, otherwise why would he as a child be the witness of the icky scene and then brutally pushed and wounded for life.

3. Do you think the Lannisters went to the wall so they could keep an eye on Bran's situation without being obvious? Why did they go to the wall in the first place?
I didn't think that it seems there was a pretty long distance between the wall and Winterfell so I don't see it being the reason.

4. After hearing about the Dagger being Tyrion's do you suspect he's more involved with his siblings plans then you may have previously thought?
He might be framed,Giving an assasin one's own dagger would be so obvious. I have no solid reason but I feel he is better in someways than Jaime and The Queen. I don't think is that brutal, he is smarter than that.

5. Do you think Catelyn was wise to leave home?
I am not sure, I didn't really understand the reason why she left in the first place but it turned out to be ok, isn't it.

6. So what are your thoughts on the mantra "Winter is coming"? What do you think it means? Could it be another way of saying be prepared?
I believe it can mean the dangerous and difficult days are coming so on the other meaning yes be prepared. And also Starks are the man of Winter, strong and courageous so it can also be personification.

7. Do you think it was a mistake for Jon to come to the Wall?
I don't think it was wrong. He just needs to adjust and soon I believe he will find himself and the honorable place he deserves. Even though he is a Stark, he is pretty different from his siblings.

8. Initial thoughts of Donal Noye and the advice and the information he gave Jon?
A good advice, he may be a bastard but he was brought up in a good family as Ned's son/bastard.He still needs to learn to survive in someways.

9. Jon made an enemy. That cannot be good. Any thoughts on what Ser Alliser will do?
I more felt like he is challenging him more than being his enemy. Thanks to Ser Alliser Jon seems to shake himself and moved toward finding his place in the brotherhood. But I may be too naive and think the best of everything.

10. Do you think Tyrion is a "nice" guy or is he hoping to turn Jon against his family?
I want to believe Tyrion is a better guy, I don't think he is trying to or he can turn Jon against his family.

11. Bran named his wolf Summer. Does this mean he'll have something to do with them getting through whatever terrible events are coming?
Summer comes after winter and I strongly believe Bran will have a serious role in Starks over coming winter and in Bran's situation, obviously the direwolf is very important.

Answers to Vi’s Questions for Chapter 20 (Eddard) to Chapter 23 (Daenrys)

1. The treasury is more than 6 million in debt. Did that surprise you? What do you think are its implications? Do you think that it is really 6 million in debt or was it made out to be to that amount?
I was surprised but then with Lannisters loaning most of the money to the King, well that can't be too unexpected, somehow it seems to me that they are having Roberts control in their hands page by page. If not they have already taken all his control over.

2. Based on the chapters so far, what is your opinion of Robert? Were you able to get a handle on him?
I am not thinking of him very highly, it looks like he doesn't want to deal with anything around him especially the Lannisters. He can't be in that position and not see how they effect every move of him. Not really believe he is a fool but he seems to prefer looking like one.

3. Do you think the Starks were wise in trusting Littlefinger? Does Littlefinger still think of Catelyn favorably?
I am not sure about Littlefinger because I am still not sure how to feel about Catelyn. I think he still has somethings for Cat and Ned is not trusting him but he seems to be doing the right thing at the moment.Maybe only because he can see through the Lannisters as well, who knows...

4. Do you think that the North and the Wall with its beyond is being taken too lightly? Due to the long summer, have people forgotten about it? What do you think of Mormont's request?
Yeah probably it is the situation. The request seemed reasonable.

5. Tyrion's leaving the watch. Have you any idea/theory behind Tyrion's journey? Is it to analyze the strength/weakness of the Night watch if in case of war?
I don't know, I can't really see why he had this journey.

I believe Jon is finding himself and strengths. About Ben, I don't know at the moment. If Jon is going to go looking for him, I don't see it happening just at the moment maybe later. If something happened to him, it has to be connected to some other happening which I can't figure out yet.

7. Ned's advice to Arya is full of wisdom. Arya seems to understand that but what about Sansa? Will Arya and Sansa ever reconcile?
I don't think they will really reconcile especially not Sansa. I think even she is the younger one Arya is more like her father, she is brave and courageous. She understood the advice and she loves her sister but Sansa seemed to more care about she would become than what is happening around her. The scene in the courtroom made me feel like that. Even then she was worried and didn't back her sister up and chose the easier way of saying she can't remember.

8. I was surprised when Ned had Arya taught "dancing" lessons. Were you surprised? Looks like this will shape Arya and Sansa's future. Agree or Disagree?
Surprised and happy, I like Arya. Definitely, will shape Arya's future.

9. Oh Boy, I knew Dany would be ass-kicker if only given the chance. And Vicious had got what was coming to him. What do you think of that incident? Do you think that Dany will have a greater role as time goes on? Especially given the last scene in the chapter where Dany takes command?
I was really confused with Kahl Drogo, he seemed very caring and nice in their first night with his "No"s. then all of a sudden Dany was afraid, scared and all alone. Maybe she was too weak for his taste. But loved that scene how she became strong. And took control, Vicious deserved it way long ago. The love-making scene was just perfect. Hope is becoming the Queen Daenerys.

10. Man, looks like the eggs might just turn viable Are we going to see dragons? Does this have any significance more with Dany as the one who might "Wake" the dragon? Such an interesting possibility, isn't it?
I believed the eggs are more than stones from the beginning but can't really predict where this will take us. Dragons maybe? hope so!

11. And looks like Dany is pregnant (As an aside, so soon???). What will be the significance of the baby? And with the dragon egg on the other side as well?
Well not really surprised to see her pregnant, she is becoming someone strong and important. And I don't know what will it be like, with the eggs and stuff. But I bet she will be changing a lot of things.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments I’m going to start increasing the question numbers, if that is okay with everyone. I’ll start with the 59th question. I can change it back, if you like.

Lisa Kay’s Questions for June 15 - Chapter 24 (Bran) - Chapter 27 (Eddard)
#1) Were you caught up in Old Nan’s story about the last hero? Do you think there are still children of the haunted forest in the far North? How do you think Old Nan’s version of story ends; happy like Bran believes?

#2) Why do you think Tyrion designed the saddle for Bran? Does his doing so assure you that he had nothing to do with the attempted assignation on Bran?

#3) Why did the direwolves respond to Tyrion with such hostility? Summer was the first to start growling; what is the significance of that? Did this change your mind about Tyrion’s ulterior motives?

#4) Any doubt as to which Robert was Jon Arryn was asking for on his death bed? Do you think he was poisoned, and if so, by whom? If it was by Queen Cersei, why did she leave the castle instead of assuring the deed was done and/or no information passed from Lord Arryn to the King Robert?

#5) What did you make of Sansa & Arya’s dreams of Bran?

#6) What was your first impression of Samwell Tarly; did it change any after hearing his life story? Did you agree with Jon’s thought that “it took a queer sort of courage to admit to cowardice”? What was the meaning of Jon’s dream of Winterfall?

#7) Were you surprised Jon had Ghost partaken in straightening Rast out by leaping onto his chest? “Remember, we know where you sleep.” Impressed he used that variation on Donal Noye's words of advice? How close a bond has been formed between all these youths of the Night’s Guard?

#8) What will be the consequences of Lord Stark giving up some of his own household guard to serve the Watch?

#9) Who holds a vital piece of the puzzle for Lord Stark: Ser Hugh (formally Lord Arryn’s squire) or Lord Stannis (the king’s brother)? Who is more likely to part with this information?

#10) What is the significance of the lineage book Lord Arryn was reading?

#11) I can’t write better questions than what we ended with: “What had Jon Arryn wanted with a king’s bastard, and why was it worth his life?” Well, except to ask, which king’s bastard? (I mean which king, Robert?)

message 238: by Sarah (last edited Jun 15, 2011 06:23PM) (new)

Sarah Dizon (sarahd828) | 380 comments 1. The treasury is more than 6 millions in debt . Did that surprise you? What do you think are its implications? Do you think that it is really 6 million in debt or was it made out to be to that amount?

I'm not sure that surprises me. I believe what they said was true that Robert doesn't like counting money and taking care of what he has to do as a King. He lets Cersei get whatever she wants I'm sure. Plus, it's his idea for the tournament, and Joffrey seems spoiled enough to never want for anything.

2. Based on the chapters so far, what is your opinion of Robert? Were you able to get a handle on him?

I really don't think he's the person Ned sees in his head. Robert has changed, as I'm sure becoming King would change anyone. He's gluttonous. He doesn't care about anything really except for his power. I don't know if I have a handle on him yet but I can tell if Ned goes to him for anything it won't go the way Ned wants it to.

3. Do you think the Starks were wise in trusting Littlefinger? Does Littlefinger still think of Catelyn favorably?

I think Littlefinger really cares for Catelyn so I don't think he'll do anything to put them in harms way. Except for maybe Ned, I don't think he likes Ned. I think he still cares for Catelyn a lot. It wouldn't surprise me, in another chapter it said he challenged Brandon when he was 15 to marry Catelyn. Young love never really dies.

4. Do you think that the North and the Wall with its beyond is being taken too lightly? Due to the long summer, have people forgotten about it? What do you think of Mormont's request?

I don't think anyone is taking anything beyond the wall seriously. That goes for the people who work the Wall and the people who know of the Wall. I don't think people have forgotten about it because of the long summer, it seems like it's been in neglect longer than that. Mormont's request is a good request, he really wants to help the people on the Wall. He wants to make sure that if there really is a threat they have sufficient supplies to take care of it. He can't train the men because he isn't getting the type of men who should be manning the Wall. He needs supplies. I'm not sure what Tyrion will do though in order to help.

5. Tyrion's leaving the watch. Have you any idea/theory behind Tyrion's journey? Is it to analyze the strength/weakness of the Night watch if in case of war?

I don't have an idea or theory behind Tyrion but that could be because I really like him as a character. I really hope he isn't anything like his siblings. I want him to be a good guy. But, alas, he could be doing just what you suggest, looking at the strengths and weakness of the Wall and the Night Watch.

I don't think Benjen will return. As in the prologue I think the Others have gotten to Benjen. I think Jon will want to go after him, and he might get that opportunity but not yet. I don't want him to only because I know it'll be very dangerous.

7. Ned's advice to Arya is full of wisdom. Arya seems to understand that but what about Sansa? Will Arya and Sansa ever reconcile?

Sansa is in "love". She won't understand anything anyone tells her unless it has to do with Joffrey. She might look back at this when she's older and realize the error in her ways but there is nothing now that will make her do that. She wants to be a princess and she thinks the world of Joff even though he's a vile teenager. Something will push Arya and Sansa together, and make them reconcile but I don't think on their own they will go to each other and do that.

8. I was surprised when Ned had Arya taught "dancing" lessons. Were you surprised? Looks like this will shape Arya and Sansa's future. Agree or Disagree?

I think Ned finally realizes that Arya will never be like the other girls and she just wants to be a tomboy. He is giving her something that will discipline her and keep her out of trouble. But it's also something she wants to do. I wasn't surprised, it really seems like it's something Ned would do. I think it will shape Arya's future more than Sansa's.

9. Oh Boy, I knew Dany would be ass-kicker if only given the chance. And Vicious had got what was coming to him. What do you think of that incident? Do you think that Dany will have a greater role as time goes on? Especially given the last scene in the chapter where Dany takes command?

I think she's finally! finally sticking up for herself! It's great! I think she will no longer worry about Viserys retaliating against her, and I think she'll stick up for herself more. She's finally realizing that as Khal Drogo's wife she has power, where she didn't have power as Viserys's sister.

10. Man, looks like the eggs might just turn viable. Are we going to see dragons? Does this have any significance more with Dany as the one who might "Wake" the dragon? Such an interesting possibility, isn't it?

I think it is an interesting possibility but I don't think the eggs will be viable. I don't see how it would be possible. They've been stone for so long, I couldn't imagine a living creature being able to come out of it. Unless there was some way that Dany being pregnant somehow made the eggs viable but I don't know how that would work.

11. And looks like Dany is pregnant (As an aside, so soon???). What will be the significance of the baby? And with the dragon egg on the other side as well?

I'm not surprised she's pregnant so soon, Khal Drogo didn't exactly only sleep with her the one time. I think the baby will cause problems for the people who do not like the Targaryans.

**sigh** :)

#4) Very good point! Just how long since anyone (anything?) treatened the wall? 8,000 years - or shorter?

#5) I really like Tyrion too. And he questions people and doles out advice in equal measure to everyone.

#9) You skipped one!

#10) Ahhh...we were on the agreement roll until this one, LOL! I think they are viable. :)

#11) WHAT! Are you talking about the king and the Lannisters? Crap.

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Lisa, I changed the numbers to 1 - 11 or was it 12? I thought the numbering might be a tad confusing. If I'd thought of it at the beginning I'd have done it that way.

Yes I was talking about the King and the Lannisers. Robert didn't go through all he did just for Dany to one day have an heir. Even if she never decides she wants to go home there is still a possibility her son (or daughter) will.

I just don't see how the eggs will be viable! It could happen but it just doesn't make sense to me! haha sorry to ruin the roll! :D

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Sarah, We love to disagree in a discussion. It would be too boring if we all thought the same thing. I love seeing what other people think. It's also fun to see who's right.

Tuğçe Gökırmak (tugcenidasevin) | 157 comments I am around chapter 35 and it is getting really good, I hardly left the book and did other things like cooking and all at home last nite...

And I am confused about almost everyone in the Castle maybe except for Ned and Arya :) And about Robert, I don't know what to make out of him. One chapter I believe he is a fool and acting like one and one chapter he talks to Ned with his open heart and I feel sad and bad for him and then he starts to act again.

And for Sarah wrote: "Yes I was talking about the King and the Lannisers."
I am totally with you in this one Sarah!

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments You too, Tugce!? Crap. This does not look good for Dany.

Vi | 1758 comments Yeah, I'm with Sarah also. At this point, I'm guessing what the over-arching story line is and I'm crap with politics and tactics.

My one theory is while Robert might not be a good king, the Lannisters also encouraged him to be. And maybe, there might have been some inflation of the debt. While we all know that Lannisters will play a major part, the incidents just keep piling on and on.

And I don't know why but while Littlefinger might still have feelings on Catelyn but when it comes to war/politics, I don't think he might be on the same side as her. But that's just me.

And crap, haven't read yesterday's chapters yet. Work, I hate you!

AH | 68 comments The debt question:

Did anyone read the debt thing as perhaps the Lannisters were buying their way into a crown of their own? Once Robert owed that much money, it wasn't really necessary that he be king? There are other consequences of such a high debt - the people in the kingdom would be hungry, lack resources and jobs, and there would be unrest. So, in essence, were the Lannisters undermining the kingdom with the high debt?

message 249: by Vi (new)

Vi | 1758 comments Yes! That's exactly what I was thinking. We don't know the situation of the laypeople in the kingdom but I suspect it won't be good. Yes, in a way, I think they would be encouraging the debt and they sure won't be helping the unrest, if present. But, like Ned, I'm still surprised how such a high debt came to!
