Martin, George R.R. - A Game of Thrones (buddy read/1st in group series read) Start date June 9th 2011

I think he knew Cersie and the Lannisters were not people to be messed with. They're scarey."
Just a tad. LOL!

#1) Were you caught up in Old Nan’s story about the last hero? Do you think there are still children of the haunted forest in the far North? How do you think Old Nan’s version of story ends; happy like Bran believes?
I still need more info about the Others and the far North. I think her story might have had a satisfying ending more than a happy one.
#2) Why do you think Tyrion designed the saddle for Bran? Does his doing so assure you that he had nothing to do with the attempted assignation on Bran?
I’m wondering if he even knew about the assassination. The attempt was made after he left.
#3) Why did the direwolves respond to Tyrion with such hostility? Summer was the first to start growling; what is the significance of that? Did this change your mind about Tyrion’s ulterior motives?
My guess is he smells like his brother and sister. Or the knife might have had his smell on it.
#4) Any doubt as to which Robert was Jon Arryn was asking for on his death bed? Do you think he was poisoned, and if so, by whom? If it was by Queen Cersei, why did she leave the castle instead of assuring the deed was done and/or no information passed from Lord Arryn to the King Robert?
His son since the king was there for awhile. I think he was poisoned by the queen and she left to make sure she wasn’t suspected. She and Jaime believe there is no proof of the murder for Lysa to show to the Hand.
#5) What did you make of Sansa & Arya’s dreams of Bran?
I don’t know.
#6) What was your first impression of Samwell Tarly; did it change any after hearing his life story? Did you agree with Jon’s thought that “it took a queer sort of courage to admit to cowardice”? What was the meaning of Jon’s dream of Winterfall?
That he’s an odd person to join the Black. Yes, I agree. To dream of your home and have it be empty can sometimes mean insecurity, a need to accept responsibility and/or be more independent or self-reliant. But it could just mean that all the Starks die. I hope not.
#7) Were you surprised Jon had Ghost partaken in straightening Rast out by leaping onto his chest? “Remember, we know where you sleep.” Impressed he used that variation on Donal Noye's words of advice? How close a bond has been formed between all these youths of the Night’s Guard?
No, Ghost is a good threat. I believe Jon is the key to forging a new Night’s Guard. One that is going to be desperately needed and soon.
#8) What will be the consequences of Lord Stark giving up some of his own household guard to serve the Watch?
I can’t think it’ll be good.
#9) Who holds a vital piece of the puzzle for Lord Stark: Ser Hugh (formally Lord Arryn’s squire) or Lord Stannis (the king’s brother)? Who is more likely to part with this information?
I think the pieces of the puzzle will be with them all and will need to be gathered, laid out and put in place, but Stannis left for a reason, so my vote is he’ll have the biggest pieces.
#10) What is the significance of the lineage book Lord Arryn was reading?
Not sure yet.
#11) I can’t write better questions than what we ended with: “What had Jon Arryn wanted with a king’s bastard, and why was it worth his life?” Well, except to ask, which king’s bastard? (I mean which king, Robert?)
Robert is described as being 6’6” tall, very strong (he wields a war hammer for pete’s sake), black hair, blue eyes. I believe Gendry is his son and if he is then he’s the king’s only son because I don’t believe for a minute that his kids with Cersei are his. How can a man with black hair (a dominant trait) have kids with blond hair? They all look like Cersei and her twin brother which means they aren’t truly the king’s children and aren’t able to inherit the throne. Jon Arryn seems to have been aware of a plot against Robert and was looking for any of Robert’s bastards. If he was doing that then he must have been suspicious of the paternity of Robert’s kids also. Aha! Hence the digging into the lineage book. Maybe for precedence? Like a bastard inheriting a throne?

Carol Replied, "My guess is he smells like his brother and sister. Or the knife might have had his smell on it."
My sister always used to say if a dog doesn't like a guy there is something wrong with him. Maybe we are all giving Tyrion too much credit. He might be as bad as his siblings.

1) Did you expect Jon to keep his role in Samwell’s assignment a secret?
2) Do you think Samwell’s taking his vows with Jon before the heart tree will strengthen their friendship?
3) If the the reason behind Mormont assigning him to the stewards was as Samwell stated, why was Ser Alliser smiling?
4) Do you feel Lord Stark should have said something about Prince Joffrey’s paternity when he called the small council together?
5) Ohhhhh…Litterfinger is truly a viperous snake! Did this surprise you? What are your thoughts about Janos Slynt? Will there be repercussions for Ser Barristan, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, for his slight hesitation?
6) Did Arya learn enough from Syrio to survive and make it back to Winterfell? Will she be reunited with her direwolf on the way home?
7) Sansa! Will she ever get a clue? Can you see her parroting reflected in what other courtiers say in from of Queen Cersei? Where you as appalled as I was that she had revealed their planned departure to Queen Cersei?

1) Did you expect Jon to keep his role in Samwell’s assignment a secret?
Yes. I don't think he did it for any other reason than to help Samwell.
2) Do you think Samwell’s taking his vows with Jon before the heart tree will strengthen their friendship?
I think it's already been strengthened. I think Jon is finally getting to know Samwell the person and who he is. I think their friendship will continue to grow.
3) If the reason behind Mormont assigning him to the stewards, why was Ser Alliser smiling?
They lied. It was Ser Alliser. Maybe not directly, but he probably had a hand in it.
4) Do you feel Lord Stark should have said something about Prince Joffrey’s paternity when he called the small council together?
I don't think it would have made any difference.
5) Ohhhhh…Litterfinger is truly a viperous snake! Did this surprise you? What are your thoughts about Janos Slynt? Will there be repercussions for Ser Barristan, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, for his slight hesitation?
I'm not surprised by Littlefinger. I just hope he doesn't get Sansa. Still Ser Creepy and runs a brothel. That hesitation may cost him.
6) Did Arya learn enough from Syrio to survive and make it back to Winterfell? Will she be reunited with her direwolf on the way home?
I hope so, but she has no money. I'm worried about her and I think it's Winter. It's here.
7) Sansa! Will she ever get a clue? Can you see her parroting reflected in what other courtiers say in from of Queen Cersei? Where you as appalled as I was that she had revealed their planned departure to Queen Cersei?
I don't think so. I think if she is to marry Joeffry it will be because she is easily manipulated. I truly doubt there will be a marriage.
Side note: I think the little girl who was with Sansa will be turned into one of Littlefingers girls. How horrible.

1. What did you think of Catelyn this time around? Do you think she did the right thing or should she have talked to Tyrion before having him taken into custody?
This is an interesting development. I’m not sure yet if it’s a good thing or a really bad thing. I am sure that Tyrion will get payback though.
2. Do you believe Tyrion about never betting against his family? Did your opinion of him change? Do you believe him?
I believe he wouldn’t bet against his family, at least publicly. Lol I can’t decide about him yet. The only thing I feel sure about is that Tyrion is for Tyrion.
3. Did what Tyrion say make you think less of Littlefinger?
No, I didn’t trust Littlefinger from the moment he came on page.
4. Sansa looks like Catelyn did when she was younger. She was receiving a lot of attention. Do you think Littlefinger would ever do anything to her? His attention seemed a little creepy to me. Anyone else think so too?
Oh, yes the creep factor was high for that scene. Don’t like him at all, no siree!
5. Did you think Prince Joffrey would escort Katelyn to her room? Do you think her opinion of him changed any because he didn't?
Nope, didn’t believe he would. He was just like a dog marking his property because Sansa drew the attention of the Knight of Flowers, but once he made his point why should he be bothered by escorting her back to her room.
6. Why do you think the Queen was so upset? Is it because she likes to be the center of attention? Started picturing Snow White's step mother. I got a "Mirror, Mirror on the wall...." vibe.
The Queen is all about appearances. I didn’t think she was upset at all. She’s a very good actress and she’s following her agenda.
7. Did you get a little nervous about Sansa being along with the Hound?
I was worried about what he might do to her.
8. What did you think of The Hound's story about Ser Gregor?
Wow! His brother is a nut bunny! I’m wondering if Sansa’s looking at the Hound differently will sway him to her favor at some crucial point in the future.
9. Did you suspect the young knight that died would be the one Eddard wished to speak to?
No.
10. If Littlefinger is lying do you think Eddard's in more trouble than you preciously thought?
No, Eddard’s been in trouble from the moment he agreed to be The Hand.
11. Varys' information was interesting. What do you think Ned will do with the information? Sounds like someone may be trying to kill the King. Anyone else wonder why after the King spilled his wine they were so insistent he have more? Could someone be trying to poison him or am I just getting a little wild with my thoughts?
Eddard needs to circle the wagons, discreetly. I don’t think killing the King with poison will work. He needs to die and make it look like an accident. If he’s poisoned it will be questioned how he died.
12. Do you think Catelyn is more likely to listen to Tyrion since he saved her?
No, I don’t think she will be swayed by that. She seems to be intuitive, so I believe she’ll listen to her gut more than anything.

C..."
That's true that animals are more sensitive to 'bad' people, but Ghost doesn't react to Tyrion the same way. Ghost's behavior is more like, 'Don't come any closer to my Master!' and Summer, Grey Wind and Shaggydog were outright hostile and attacked him. Tyrion is a close relation to Cersei and Jaime, so he'll have a 'family' smell to him. Since Jaime actually held Bran before tossing him out the window, Summer had to have smelled him on Bran. That's what I was trying to say.

Nope. I read then sit down and start thinking about what I thought about it and start writing the questions. Don't know till I start what I'll say or ask. :)
BTW, I'm a stay-at-home mom, so I don't have any work to take up my time just kids. Last week I had a bunch of things to drive the kids around to and that is what prevented me from reading and writing questions timely. Plus, I got a bunch of ARC of books to review for my blog, which I started because hubby said if I did he'd fully support my book habit. Now that's motivation. :) So between posting reviews, reading books, etc I got a little boggled down last week.

1. Found all of Ayra's training to be interesting and fun. Were you surprised her father did not believe what she heard even after he found out Daenery's was pregnant?
I think it was not very smart of him to just dismiss her story out of hand especially with all that’s going on AND with things he’s being told from other sources. It makes me think less of him.
2. Who do you think the two men were? I thought the one might be the Hound and the other might be Tywin, the Queen's father. He's still alive, right?
I believe Arya knows what the Hound looks like and should have recognized him. I think the fat one with all the rings and yellow beard is Magister Illyrio. Not sure what he’s got going, but it’s not good. He’s not travelling with Daenerys, so he could have made the trip to King’s Landing.
3. Did you agree with Eddard declining the office of the King's Hand?
Yes. There’s no way to curb Robert or get him to believe his life is in danger, so he needs to go find the truth on his own.
4. Do you think Catelyn was wrong for going to see her sister? Why do you think she didn't travel back the same way she came?
I think it was clever to mislead everyone as to where she was going. Her sister is a freakin’ nut bunny though. Hopefully she can get some answers while she’s at the Eyrie.
5. What is with going to see all the King's illegitimate children? I still can't figure this one out. Though I'm disliking Robert more and more.
I think they’re looking for an heir to the throne. An illegitimate child is probably eligible if the King has no legitimate heirs. And I just know those kids of Cersei’s are not Robert’s. Otherwise why kill Jon Arryn for looking into Robert’s bastards?
6. Gah! More death. Were you surprised that Jamie didn't kill Eddard? I think we'll see a lot more bloodshed before the book is done.
Crap, crap and more crap! I hate seeing good men die! I’m wondering why Jaime let Eddard live. It’s not making a lot of sense right now. Eddard will tell Robert what happened. Robert is such an ass that I’m not sure what he’ll do. Probably nothing.

I'm sure of it. Makes him even more vile. I woke up worried about her. This book is going to give me nightmares.

Carol said, "I think the fat one with all the rings and yellow beard is Magister Illyrio."
You may be right. I want to know.

Maybe. I wondered the same thing. I don't know if it will be b/c of a claim to the crown as much as it is proof King Robert couldn't sire a blond (obviously, they've never read a genetics book).

#1 - Tyrion will get payback though.
I think so too, but I think he'll be fair & reasonable.
#3 - No, I didn’t trust Littlefinger from the moment he came on page.
You and Lisarenee called this one; I should have considered his brothels more in his characters. They must have been beastly places back then.
#5 - ...once he made his point why should he be bothered...
Ditto!
#6 - She’s a very good actress...
Oscar worthy!
#7 & #8 - I was worried about what he might do to her. ...will sway him to her favor at some crucial point in the future.
I was too. I didn't know what to think when he started talking to her. In his own way, he was trying to get her to wake up and smell the

Totally forgot that Ghost reacted differently to Tyrion. Interesting. Leads credience to the theory that Jon Snow may be Prince Rhaegar & Lyanna's son.
Since some dogs can sniff out cancer, I would think that the whole similar DNA thing would be a trigger for Summer, Grey Wind and Shaggydog (and Ghost!).

#2 - I think the fat one with all the rings and yellow beard is Magister Illyrio.
Oh. My. God!!!
#5 - An illegitimate child is probably eligible if the King has no legitimate heirs. ...Otherwise why kill Jon Arryn for looking into Robert’s bastards?
Maybe. I'm not completly sold on this one. How do we know that the Lannisters killed him? Personally, I think there's a good argument for saying: "The Nut Bunny did it!"
#6 - Crap, crap and more crap! ...It’s not making a lot of sense right now.
Ditto, ditto, and more ditto! Oh, and ditto!

Questions for Chapter 36 (Daenerys) – 39 (Eddard)
1. How's your perception of Dothrakis? What do you think of them as a civilization?
They do not meet the requirements to be called a civilization. They are barbaric and honor only themselves. They bring back spoils of war yet don’t have any forward progress of their own. They may be fierce fighters, but fighting is not everything.
2. Do you think Robb is correct in agreeing with Greyjoy's decision to call the banners? Do you think the Starks (well, some of them) can trust Greyjoy?
No, since he is not the Lord of Winterfell and won’t be until his father dies. I don’t trust Theon Greyjoy at all. There’s something unpleasant and weasly about him.
3. Did the men have some reason in coming so close to Winterfell?
They’re deserters who are starving. They probably hoped to steal stuff to survive.
4. With all the events that are taking place now, do you agree that Catelyn was wrong in going to Lysa place?
No, it was the best decision she could make at the time.
5. Tyrion took a very bold chance. What do you think he was trying to achieve?
He was trying to get out of there before he died.
6. Bah, Robert is soo not on my like-list. Now he wants Ned back as the Hand. What do you think of this?
I think Eddard should leave in the middle of the night with every member of his household and sail to Dragonstone and Ser Stannis for some answers. Robert is a worthless POS and should never have been King.

#2 - I think the fat one with all the rings and yellow beard is Magister Illyrio.
Oh. My. God!!!
#..."
Oh, I believe the Lannister twins poisoned Jon Arryn. They paid the squire very well to do it hence the knighting, the new armor, blah, blah, blah. If he hadn't died in the tourney they would've found a way to have him killed in a fight or accident of some kind before Eddard could talk to him.
Of course, this is all speculation on my part. If I didn't need to get my hallway painted I'd be reading on. *pouts* I hate painting!

Good point about the armor, Carol, but I think he might of received that from the king when he was knighted. You are going to make me dig in my heels and stick with my theory that "The Nut Bunny did it!" -- aren't you? LOL!
Good luck with your painting! What's the color?

Good point about the armor, Carol..."
I decided to read the next section. I mean, no kids here this week, so I have all evening. LOL It's called frosted lemon, a pale yellow, with white trim. :)
I looked back at the passage about the squire's death and Robert knighted him in Jon's honor, but the boy paid for his own armor and Ser Barristan didn't think it was completely paid for. So he couldn't have been paid handsomely to poison his Lord. Combined with what I just read when Maester Colemon told Catelyn that Lord Jon was going to foster Robert to Dragonstone, well...I'm beginning to wonder if the Ol' Nut Bunny didn't poison her husband before the Lannisters had a chance at him. Hubby dearest was going to send her precious baby away...oh, no he wasn't. What a twisted story this is!
I still believe the squire knew important info that Eddard needed and that the twins would have killed him at the first opportunity.

This is not just a soap-opera, but an epic soap-opera.
Now, Carol, get back to your painting! LOL!

Questions for Chapter 40 (Catelyn) - Chapter 43 (Eddard)
1. I now suspect Littlefinger is one of the men Ayra saw talking in the secret passage of the castle. His beard is pointy, and they talked about him having rings (page 440). Anyone else think so? Still unsure of his motives. Tyrion did say Littlefinger was out for Littlefinger. Maybe it's all for personal gain? Any thoughts?
Littlefinger isn’t fat and Arya saw a grossly fat man with rings on every finger, a yellow forked beard and he spoke with an accent. I’d bet money it’s Illyrio. The other man was stout, but glided soundlessly. He had a leather half cape, steel cap, mail over boiled leather, had a dirk and a shortsword, was scarred and had dark facial stubble. She thought he looked familiar, so he must not be someone she’s seen often. I have no idea who he is.
2. I agree that Lysa is a bad influence on her son and he should be fostered. She seems slightly unbalanced. Anyone agree or disagree? She seems consumed by hate. I'm suspecting something more happened than just her husband being poisoned. Any ideas?
She is a nut bunny, plain and simple. I think having so many of her children die has unbalanced her. I’m beginning to believe she poisoned her husband because he was going to send her precious baby to be fostered. I still believe the twins wanted him dead, but Lysa beat them to it. She’s pointing the finger at them, so Jon must have said something to her for her to point their way.
3. Loved that Jon tried to convince them to use Sam in another capacity and stop the torture of his training. Do you think they'll take his advice? I kept hoping he'd go home.
I believe Maester Aemon is pretty smart. I think he’ll do what Jon asked. I had hoped Jon would go home, but I still think his best place is at the Wall. He’s needed there.
4. Tyrion's story of his first wife was shocking and sad. Do you think she really was a whore or do you think they would do that to her because she was undesirable for a wife of a Lannister? I kept struggling between the two scenarios. I'm guessing she was hired.
I believe she was hired. I can totally believe the story. And remember, Lannisters always pay their debts.
5. Tyrion is as smart as a whip. Did you think he'd be able to talk his way out of being enslaved? I guess he knows what drives people, but you also have to have some finesse in order to accomplish a change in thought.
It’s tricky business talking one’s way out of death or enslavement, but money talks and he and his family have plenty of it.
6. I guess a medieval type tale isn't complete unless the villagers are pillaged? What do you think about all the chaos associate with the Lannisters? Do you believe it is the dastardly deeds of Jamie and his Motley crew?
I don’t doubt it. Chess pieces are moving about and it’s getting hard to keep track of the game.

Just ruminating here...back to painting. :P

Looking back over my postings I see that on 6/12 I was 90% sure it was rape. But the next day's reading I was having my doubts, since it was only Robert who kept pointing that out. Now I'm about 90% sure she wasn't raped. I'd be great on a jury, wouldn't I?

#2 - Ahhh... you are coming around to my way of thinking! **hee hee**
#3 - I agree; Jon is needed at the wall. The question is, will anything cause him to leave?

Dang! I had forgot about the weight issue. Good catch. Anyone else feel like we're playing Clue? It was Colonel Mustard in the Conservatory with the Candlestick coated in poison. :)
I'm starting to wonder just how many of our questions will be answered in this first book.
Is anyone who is reading this book not going to read the second one?

1) Does Septa Mordane have reason to be upset that Lord Baelish/Littlefinger overheard what Sansa said her father’s decision regarding Ser Loras? (BTW, I think Lisarenee is right; he’s a little creepy now, stoking her face like that; do you? Though I did like what he said, “Life in not a song, sweetling.”) Comments.
I’m not sure. His attitude regarding Sansa is creepy. I think Sansa needs to be far away from him.
2) Seems like Sansa has fully succumb to revisionist history and also a bit of arrogance. Do you think she will make a good queen? What did you think of her dreaming of Lady.
No, not a good Queen. She’s a twit. Not sure about the dream.
3) Interesting that Sansa brought clarity to Lord Stark by seeing Prince Joffrey by his true sigil. Still, now that her direwolf is dead, do you see her as more than just an observer? Or just someone unprotected?
Unprotected. And still a twit.
4) Where you surprised Lord Stark desired to confront Queen Cersei with her sins b/f speaking with King Robert? What of his choice of location; did that have any impact on her speaking the truth? It didn’t seem to affect her propositioning him. Comments.
Wow. I didn’t see that coming. I’m thinking less and less of him as the book goes along because I think that was a stupid move.
5) Did the horse heart eating gross you out as much as it did me (which was a lot!)? Were you ever in doubt of her keeping it down? Does the dosh khaleen’s prophesy reassure you of the safety of Dany’s baby? Were you surprise that Dany and Drogo made love in front of witnesses? Does this make her more Dothraki?
It was gross, but not unexpected for the society she’s living in. I didn’t doubt she’d keep it down. She’s a strong and determined woman. I don’t believe in the prophesy. No one is safe. Unlike Catelyn he didn’t really consider herself a Stark, Dany has embraced being a Dothraki. She feels both Dothraki and Targaryen. I like the name she picked out, a combination of her brother and her husband.
6) Were you worried about Dany and her baby when Viserys threatened her with his sword? Were you surprised with his "crown of gold"?
I wasn’t worried and the crown of gold was a clever way to shed no blood.
7) Oh, man! I thought when Lyanna was saying “Promise me, Ned,” in his dream we were finally going to get a few answers or clues as to Jon Snow’s paternity. Where are you on this speculation?
I still believe Jon is Lyanna’s and Rhaegar’s son.
8) What were your observations and conclusions about King Robert's fight with the boar?
He brought his own downfall. Typical behavior for him.
9) Do you think Ned should have told Robert about the parentage of Joffrey, Myrcella, and Tommen? Do you think his decision a wise one?
Dying or not Eddard should have told Robert of the parentage issue. I think Eddard is a dead man walking.
10) Do you think Ned’s letter will reach Lord Stannis? Is so, any idea what will happen?
I hope so and I have no idea.
11) What do you think of Litterfinger’s advice? Does this make you doubt it was him that Arya overheard? Was he just testing Lord Stark’s resolve? Or is he just keeping his finger in every pie and/or stirring the soup with it?
I never believed it was Littlefinger. I don’t trust Littlefinger at all. I think he’d love it if Eddard died.

Love the Night Huntress series!!
I hope I have time to read today. Hubby and I decided to paint the kids' bathroom while they're away visiting my parents in Ohio. I'm seriously hoping it won't be an all day project. The bathroom isn't that large, but there will be a lot of trimming around stuff, unlike a nice big blank wall that can be rolled, rolled, rolled.

1. Did anyone expect the dead men to come back to life? I did. Does that mean I've seen too many horror movies?
2. What did you think the hand going down the throat was looking for - soul or heart? CREEPY!
4. Did they say if anyone besides Jon survived? There was another zombie that he didn't deal with. Wonder what happened to him...but do I really want to know???????
3. Was anyone surprised that so much time had passed? I didn't think it'd been a full year.
4. Anyone else thinking Catelyn is a bad mom? Why is she not going home to her two youngest kids? I understand her brother's in trouble and her father is dying, but she has kids. I can't fathom being away from my kids that long.
5. Interesting that Rob's first reaction to Sansa's letter was "What's wrong with that girl." and not "They must have forced her to write this." What do you think?
6. Bran's statement about Sansa loosing her Wolf makes me wonder how close those wolves are tied to the children. Seems like there could be another story just about that.
7. Speaking of Bran, I feel so bad he can't be healed. I kept hoping he could. He's struggling so much with what he can do and what he would have been able to do. Any thoughts?
8. Looks like raising the banners was a good choice on Robb's part. I still don't like him going to war.
9. So there is a dilemma is getting the father more important than trying to defeat the Others. Which do you think they should have done first?
10. Dany and her husband were almost poisoned. Did you think it odd that Ser Jorah thought the wine was tainted? Could he have set it up to persuade Kahl Drago to wage war on the Seven Kingdoms?
11. Do you think that Dany and the Starks might become allies?

1. Did anyone expect the dead men to come back to life? I did. Does that mean I've seen too many horror movies?
Nope. Total surprise! I was a little suspicious/concerned about the Night’s Watch taking the bodies back to Castle Black, as I figured the animals knew something ; nonetheless, I wasn’t expecting Zombies.
2. What did you think the hand going down the throat was looking for - soul or heart? CREEPY!
I didn’t know what (if) it was looking for; I’m not familiar with Zombies and I just thought it was trying to choke Jon. Soul or heart do sound pretty CREEPY!
4. Did they say if anyone besides Jon survived? There was another zombie that he didn't deal with. Wonder what happened to him...but do I really want to know???????
The old man, Mormont, is alive, right? I thought he was standing there holding a candle while Jon was choking. I don’t know about anyone else; I’m hoping Sam is alive, but I’m not worried about Ser Alliser at all , LOL! The only ray of hope I see here is that maybe Jon won’t be punished for what he did to
3. Was anyone surprised that so much time had passed? I didn't think it'd been a full year.
I was pretty surprised. I have been wondering about this time/age thing for a while now and haven’t posted anything. I’ve wondered if, in Martin’s Westeros world, our sense of time doesn’t apply. It has made me more accepting of all these young kids having sex and going off to war. Especially, since there are only Winter and Summer, and they last for “years”.
4. Anyone else thinking Catelyn is a bad mom? Why is she not going home to her two youngest kids? I understand her brother's in trouble and her father is dying, but she has kids. I can't fathom being away from my kids that long.
I am not too happy with Catelyn right now. I think she is the one of the reasons for her husband imminent death. I hate to sound like “a woman’s place…” But yes, she is needed at home!! To play devil’s advocate: but, maybe she’d just muck things up there.
5. Interesting that Robb's first reaction to Sansa's letter was "What's wrong with that girl." and not "They must have forced her to write this." What do you think?
Ditto! I’ve always felt I liked Sansa more than some of other readers; however much I roll my eyes at her, and see her “shallowness”, she is not an evil person, just very young. She represents an innocence I can relate to (many decades ago!). Some of this can be laid at her parents’ feet. She’s caught in a deadly political game she hasn’t the smarts for; but, then, I think Catelyn and Ned have played some of their chess pieces wrong too.
6. Bran's statement about Sansa losing her Wolf makes me wonder how close those wolves are tied to the children. Seems like there could be another story just about that.
I think the wolves are very tied to the Stark children. Do you mean a story from the wolves perspectives? That would be cool.
7. Speaking of Bran, I feel so bad he can't be healed. I kept hoping he could. He's struggling so much with what he can do and what he would have been able to do. Any thoughts?
Well, from what I understand, there are going to be seven books, so Bran may fly yet.
8. Looks like raising the banners was a good choice on Robb's part. I still don't like him going to war.
It does look like it was the best choice; I don’t like him going to war either; I’m worried about him.
9. So there is a dilemma is getting the father more important than trying to defeat the Others. Which do you think they should have done first?
I think Ned is a dead man no matter what; therefore, I think they should be fighting the Others. This dilemma parallels what has often happened in countries; so much fighting within the country that they become more susceptible to eviler enemies from without.
10. Dany and her husband were almost poisoned. Did you think it odd that Ser Jorah thought the wine was tainted? Could he have set it up to persuade Kahl Drago to wage war on the Seven Kingdoms?
Hummmm… I hadn’t thought of that.
Question: But, don’t Ser Jorah and Old Mormont have the same last name? And the Old Bear was mumbling (page 561) something about his son loving the king’s vain young wife (which king?) and selling “poachers”. I thought awhile back that Ser Jorah was the one sending messages back to tell them Dany was pregnant b/c the names someone was mentioning were the same or similar. Can’t remember where it was, so I can’t look it up.
11. Do you think that Dany and the Starks might become allies?
I’ve been wondering that too. Actually, I’ve been hoping that!

Edit to #1 - Yes, Lisarenee, it means you've seen too many horror movies, LOL! Here's one with a nice, cool, refreshing drink for you...(view spoiler) ["br"]>

Sarah's Questions for Chapter Eddard (12) through Chapter Sansa (15)
1. We've had a lot of speculation about Jon's parentage. Robert was with Ned the year he was away and mentions Wylla - Jon's mother. What do you think of this new development? If Wylla is Jon's mother then who was Ashara to Ned? Could it be that he had more than one affair?
I think the "real" story remains to be revealed. Too many red herrings.
2. We finally find out that Rhaegar did rape Lyanna. Does this change anything for you?
Doesn't really change anything, but it does help me understand why the Targaryans are so hated.
3. Ned advises Robert that "no one man should hold both the East and West". Do you think this could be foreshadowing something? Or is it just advice?
I have now come to believe that anything and everything could be a harbinger of what's to come.
4. Does it surprise you to find out how Jaime Lannister got his nickname of Kingslayer? Also, what about Ned finding Jaime sitting on the Iron Throne?
Doesn't surprise me that he killed someone, but it does surprise me that he would kill the person he served (or maybe that shouldn't surprise me!). Jaime clearly wants to hold the power...it's surprising he got off the throne so easily.
5. What do you think about the young boys called "Rapers" being taken to the Wall? Does it shock you?
To me, the Wall is a no-man's land -- a place of exile. So, no this is not really shocking.
6. Does this sentence say anything important about the Lannisters? "The Lannisters took what was offered" (120). Think about it in reference to what Ned said about Jaime sitting on the throne. Does it change anything about Jaime Lannister?
7. What do you think of the bond between Jon and Tyrion?
I really like their relationship. They have a lot in common, and it's a testament to Tyrion's character that he's trying to help Jon.
8. Who do you think the man was, who was sent to Bran's room? Who do you think sent him? Why?
I think the man was sent there by Jaime and Cersei to finish the job that Jaime started.
9. Many have shown dislike for Theon Grayjoy, how do you feel about him being allowed to hear what Catelyn has to say about the Lannisters?
I think Catelyn has her reasons for trusting him.
10. Even after 15 years Catelyn does not consider herself to be a Stark. She tells Robb to stay at Winterfell because "there must always be a Stark at Winterfell" (137). Why do you think Catelyn chooses to exclude herself from being a Stark?
I didn't interpret this as Catelyn not considering herself a Stark....I took it in the context of this being a male-dominated society. Women can't inherit land so therefore can't really be in charge. (although later it certainly appears Lysa is in charge of the Eyrie...Hmmmmmm).
11. Is it significant that the "wilder" children look like Starks and the "tamer" children look like Tullys? Why?
Having a hard time remembering this one...
12. What do you think about the fight between Arya and Joffrey? What kind of repercussions do you think will follow?
I love Arya. She is trying so hard to be herself rather than comform to society's standards of how a young girl should act and what she should aspire to. I think this proves Joffrey is a spoiled, weak little b**ch. The repercussions can only be bad, considering who the boy's mother is.

1. Gah! They killed Lady and then Micah. I thought Micah would get off with just punishment not death. Did anyone see that coming? Wonder where Nymeria is? I love how the wolves are so smart.
Saw this in the TV show first, and no, I didn't see it coming, but I probably should have! I do wonder what happened to Nymeria.
2. Thoughts on Bran's dreams before he woke up? Do you think he'll remember everything? Do you think it was a dream or will he now see things? Could he have the same powers as Varys whom Catelyn referred to as a spider?
I think eventually he may remember, although it could be years down the road. Not sure about powers, but anything is possible.
3. Do you think the Lannisters went to the wall so they could keep an eye on Bran's situation without being obvious? Why did they go to the wall in the first place?
The only Lannister I recall going to the Wall is Tyrion, and (if I recall correctly) it's because he wanted to **ahem** urinate off of it.
4. After hearing about the Dagger being Tyrion's do you suspect he's more involved with his siblings plans then you may have previously thought?
I don't suspect Tyrion at all. I think Tyrion is a scapegoat.
5. Do you think Catelyn was wise to leave home?
No, because the roads are dangerous and the rumblings of war have made it more important for families to stay together.
6. So what are your thoughts on the mantra "Winter is coming"? What do you think it means? Could it be another way of saying be prepared?
Living in Minnesota, this is a phrase that I am all too familiar with (LOL). I definitely think it's a way of saying be prepared. They haven't had a winter in many years, so they know that the coming one will be one of the worst in history. To me, it's also saying that bad times are ahead so enjoy the good while you can.
7. Do you think it was a mistake for Jon to come to the Wall?
Yes and no. I think there is honor in defending the realm by serving at the Wall, on the other hand I think the sacrifices are too great.
8. Initial thoughts of Donal Noye and the advice and the information he gave Jon?
Can't recall!
9. Jon made an enemy. That cannot be good. Any thoughts on what Ser Alliser will do?
He will probably do all he can to make Jon's life at the Wall a living hell.
10. Do you think Tyrion is a "nice" guy or is he hoping to turn Jon against his family?
I think he's a "nice" guy.
11. Bran named his wolf Summer. Does this mean he'll have something to do with them getting through whatever terrible events are coming?
That's a really good question! The name definitely could be symbolic of the wolf's role when "winter" arrives.

1. The treasury is more than 6 millions in debt . Did that surprise you? What do you think are its implications? Do you think that it is really 6 million in debt or was it made out to be to that amount?
It's very surprising that there is that much money in a "medieval" realm. It's not surprising given the King's penchant for eating, drinking partying with hookers. The implications are it will be difficult to raise an army and take care of the subjects. I think the debt is what they said it is...not sure why they would lie about it.
2. Based on the chapters so far, what is your opinion of Robert? Were you able to get a handle on him?
Robert is a king who doesn't want to be the king. He still misses Ned's sister...he's married to a woman he doesn't love....he doesn't like his wife's family. I'm surprised he doesn't just name someone else king so he can get on with his drinking, hunting and wh**ing.
3. Do you think the Starks were wise in trusting Littlefinger? Does Littlefinger still think of Catelyn favorably?
Littlefinger is a mystery. He appears to be playing both sides to his own advantage. I think he resents Catelyn for what happend in their youth.
4. Do you think that the North and the Wall with its beyond is being taken too lightly? Due to the long summer, have people forgotten about it? What do you think of Mormont's request?
I don't think the Wall and beyond are being taken lightly. Efforts are being made to recruit more to man the Wall. I don't recall Mormont's request...
5. Tyrion's leaving the watch. Have you any idea/theory behind Tyrion's journey? Is it to analyze the strength/weakness of the Night watch if in case of war?
6. Jon seems to have heeded Tyrion's and Donal Noye's advice. And after Bran's news, he seems to have matured a bit. We also learn that Ben is also missing. And Jon's statement also seems to be some kind of omen. Has anything happened to Ben? Will Jon have to go after him?
It would appear something has happend to Ben. As his nephew, Jon will feel obligated to go after him.
7. Ned's advice to Arya is full of wisdom. Arya seems to understand that but what about Sansa? Will Arya and Sansa ever reconcile?
Sansa has one goal in mind: marriage to Joffrey. The sisters will reconcile but it will be a long, hard road to that reconciliation.
8. I was surprised when Ned had Arya taught "dancing" lessons. Were you surprised? Looks like this will shape Arya and Sansa's future. Agree or Disagree?
Yes, it was surprising but also a great testament to Ned's character to allow his daughter to follow her spirit. I agree.
9. Oh Boy, I knew Dany would be ass-kicker if only given the chance. And Vicious had got what was coming to him. What do you think of that incident? Do you think that Dany will have a greater role as time goes on? Especially given the last scene in the chapter where Dany takes command?
I love Dany, loved this scene. She has matured quite a bit in a short time. V deserves all he gets. He's a whiny little you-know-what just like Joffrey! I think there are great things in store for Dany.
10. Man, looks like the eggs might just turn viable. Are we going to see dragons? Does this have any significance more with Dany as the one who might "Wake" the dragon? Such an interesting possibility, isn't it?
Can't comment on this as I've seen the show!
11. And looks like Dany is pregnant (As an aside, so soon???). What will be the significance of the baby? And with the dragon egg on the other side as well?
Well, Dany and Drogo have been very **ahem** active, and there's no birth control so no big surprise here. the baby means a rival to Robert's heirs' throne.

Whoa! Now, there's an idea! Wow!
#7 -- so circumstances may have them sticking together.
True!
#11 -- The baby is going to play an important part too. Especially if it’s a son. I wonder if the baby and the egg will be born together. Hmmm….
Ditto!
