What are you reading?
Am about three-quarters of the way through
. So glad I discovered this author. My first experience was in reading her latest
and similarly could not put that one down either. Russell does so much with language that reading her books is an experience you don't want to miss.
Jane wrote: "I have also recently hopped on the
bandwagon and am now partway through Book #2. What is everyone thinking so far?"I started Clash of Kings but I've stalled because of other books. Can't wait to get back to it though, especially to find out what happened next after that amazing last scene in Game of Thrones.
I'm currently reading The Butterfly Cabinet by Bernie McGill. The first 50 pages in so far and I am completely engrossed in this gothic late 19th Century setting in an Irish castle. Reminds me a bit of The House at Riverton by Kate Morton, only because it’s a servant girl telling one side of the story.
This week I read Cleopatra's Daughter (excellent!), Sarah's Key (part brilliant/part annoying), and 220 pages of The Tea Rose (a big, horrible soap opera, which I eventually threw across the room in disgust). Now I am half-way through Summer Blowout, which isn't exactly Shakespeare, but OK for a quick read.Everyone in Hurricane Irene's path: be safe! Here in Florida, we're used to that sort of thing, but I know a lot of you haven't had to deal with these storms. I hope you are all Okay.
I just bought Will Kenyon's short storiesThe Giant/The Littlest Goblin - Two Short Storiesvia Kindle. Also reading Sarah Maclay's latest poetry collection, Music for the Black Room
I started Among Others by Jo Walton. So far, just fantastic. This book is for anyone who's ever looked at life through the prism of childhood books.
Just finished The Black Tower, which was good. Going to the library tomorrow to pick up Kane and Abel.
I finished The Summer I Died on Saturday. That was an intense book to say the least. After that, I decided to go with something much lighter. So I started I Am Ozzy. It is very funny so far.
Reading "Half Broke Horses" by Jeannette Walls. Talk about an up all night lamp burning page turner! I just started reading this book sometime last night and at six in the morning I am already halfway through it due to not wanting to stop reading and go to bed! What a life Ms. Walls grandmother lived!
Currently I am reading ELLIS ISLAND and thoroughly enjoying it. It is such a departure from what I usually read, but I cannot stop reading it. in fact, I was still reading at 3AM. Yesterday we went to BN and I bought Elizabeth Chadwick's LADY OF THE ENGLISH.
Suzanne wrote: "Just finished The Black Tower, which was good. Going to the library tomorrow to pick up Kane and Abel.I really enjoyed "Kane & Abel" when I read it a while back, hope you will too.
I finished Night Star by Alyson Noel, oh gosh, I love the series but this book didn't worked for me. I didn't like it but I'm going stick with the series so I started
i am currently reading Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford and I really don't like it. Mayne it is because I read What is the What right before this and now my standards are all high and stuff. Either way, I can't wait to be done with this one and on to Zeitoun
Mafalda wrote: "I just finished
Wow amazing! Now I'm reading
by Luanne Rice, it's a new author for me :)"I have enjoyed many of Luanne Rice's books. Are you finding her a good writer of daily happening stories?
Monef wrote: "i am currently reading Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford and I really don't like it. Mayne it is because I read What is the What right before this and now my stan..."Hi Monef, I read both of those books and I know what you mean. They are very different! If you just think of "Hotel" as a cute little love story then it's actually a really nice book. It's definitely not going to move you the way "What" did. Never read Zeitoun though, so no comment on that!
I'm in a classics phase right now: recently finished East of Eden by Steinbeck, The Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway, The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald, and Lord of the Flies by Golding. I am now reading Of Mice and Men for the second time since high school. I loved East of Eden and Lord of The Flies, but Gatsby and Old Man were only okay. Next on the list - Les Misérables. I've got tickets to see the musical in November so of course I have to read the book first!
I'm finally getting started on The Help and I really like it so far. I've also started My Life in France as well as The Cat Who Said Cheese
Currently reading Room by Emma Donoghue. I can't hardly put it down it's so good! Better late than never...

I just started The Poisonwood Bible and I keep picking up (and then putting down) Doctor Zhivago. I just keep getting distracted by other books...
Did an audio of My Ántonia which I really enjoyed. It was interesting to hear about emigration to the midwest. I tend to think east coast or west. LOL
Monef wrote: "Mayne it is because I read What is the What right before this and now my standards are all high and stuff. "LOL! I loved What Is The What--it would be weird to read a romance novel afterwards, I agree!
I finished I Am Ozzy last night. I think that this was the funniest book I've ever read.I then started The Great and Secret Show.
I finished another typical Maeve Binchy book, The Glass Lake and now reading In Asiaby Tiziano Terzani (love his books) and 'De ongeloofelijke reis' by Clive Cussler. Never would hav thought he would write also this kind of books. But it seems to be good at the moment!
I'm in the middle of The Inquisitor's Apprentice by Chris Moriarty, a middle grade fantasy set in a magical turn of the century New York. So far loving it!
I read quite a diverse set of books in August and enjoyed them all:An Elevated View: Colorado Writers on Writing (an excellent essay anthology)
Carte Blanche
On the Wrong Track
Quick Service (a hoot and a half!)
Heaven's Keep
...and I'm currently reading
The Roald Dahl Omnibus: Perfect Bedtime Stories for Sleepless Nights, an excellent collection of faintly creepy short stories.
I'm in the middle of
which I'm really enjoying. I'm also reading
,
and just started a small book called
which a friend of mine just loaned me. I've had quite a few people tell me how great it is.
Just finished De ongeloofelijke reis by clive Cussler, very good and fun. Continuing In Asia By Terziano Terzani and will start tomorrow Ask Me If I'm Happy.
I've slowed down a lot in the last month-- my dad is now under hospice care and failing fast and so much of my time has been spent traveling. So. Still reading The Luxe and now listening to The Watchman in the car. Have The Confessions of Catherine de Medici and Sizzling Sixteen up next.
Jeane wrote: "Just finished De ongeloofelijke reis by clive Cussler, very good and fun. (Although I admit, I did have to Google it to find out what it was in English!) It looks cute.
I just finished The Quilter's Apprentice. It was a light read- I finished in just over three hours while watching a football game- but it was surprisingly engrossing.

Suzanne, I also though I knew every Clive Cussle book but it was a funy suprise when my sister sent me this one. It is cute and he manages to put his typical Cussler part in this story. First I thought it was a completely different genre he had written.
