Beth I'm currently reading The Red Tent The Red Tent by Anita Diamant , a book that's been recommended to me by many and has been on my TBR list for awhile, and I'm finally getting around to it. So far, I've found it fascinating!

Prior to that, I caught up on some mysteries on my pile, the genre I most frequently read since I write them, too. I've read the following in July and recommend them all, though they all have very different tones:
Lucky You by Carl Hiaasen Lucky You
Death and the Lit Chick: A St. Just Mystery Death and the Lit Chick A St. Just Mystery by G.M. Malliet
Below Zero (Joe Pickett, #9) by C.J. Box Below Zero

Brenda Klaassen (librarymom23) I am listening to The Island and working of reading Friendship Bread.

message 25255: by Flora (new)

Flora Smith (bookwormflo) I just finished One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd which I really liked altho the ending was pretty violent which was kinda expected considering the time frame. I'm almost finished with Three Musketeers just another 100 pages. I'll be glad when its done and over with. I'm just now starting Titus Groan and not really sure what to expect from this one.

You know there are two more books in the series. I have the combined volume, The Gormenghast Novels: Titus Groan/Gormenghast/Titus Alone(1168 pages) of all three and I've been looking at it on the TBR shelf for several years. (sigh) I don't think I'm ready to make that commitment but I guess I could tackle it one book at a time, maybe. Enjoy!

Alex Kudera | 49 comments Susanna wrote: "I'm about to start The Quiet American by Graham Greene."

I loved the movie, bought the book soon after seeing it, and it has stared at me (quietly) unread on my shelf for years since then. One day, I read!

message 25259: by Alex (new)

Alex Kudera | 49 comments I'm reading the serialized Roberto Bolano story from The Paris Review (part 2 of 4 in current issue, which also has great interviews if you like fantasy/futurist stuff), and I'm reading The Skating Rink. You could say that I'm reading Bolano.

message 25260: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicasey) @Glenda: I'm glad you were able to find something fun to enjoy. I can definitely see where "Room" would be difficult after that Anthony trial.

I have read almost all of this series. They are all good; I think because she doesn't just crank them out- Sometimes it seems like ages between books.

I also read Crooked Letter,Crooked Letter. It was good and certainly held my interest but also predictable (but most in this genre are)

Agree and as a result I hesitate to read him again. Does anyone know if this is typical for this author?

The old one or the new one? I'm planning to watch the old movie after reading the book. Caine and Fraser just don't call out to me. I'm only about 40 pages in but so far I'm intrigued and hesitant. I didn't expect to love it but I'm pleasantly surprised so far.

message 25264: by Scott (new)

Scott | 257 comments Finished Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Now I'm going to read The Beach.

message 25265: by Claire (new)

Claire (clairebear8) | 514 comments I am still reading Mockingjay - its a pretty quick read and good so far. Next up is Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, which I read about in our local newspaper (book review) and went out and bought. Hopefully it will be good. It looks like a very different sort of book, with vintage pictures that are supposedly important to the telling of the story.

Glenda (glenda-r) Kristi wrote: "@Glenda: I'm glad you were able to find something fun to enjoy. I can definitely see where "Room" would be difficult after that Anthony trial."

Yes, I've decided to shelve Room for the time being. I am particularly sensitive to abuse of children, especially around that age, right now for some reason. I'll stick with some light reading until I feel better.

Beth, I hope I haven't replied to this earlier but The Red Tent by Anita Diamant is a fantastic book. I read it several years ago and it is still with me.

Susanna, The newer one--it's great. Michael Caine is excellent (he's a bit over the hill, but he could play Cyrus Duffleman better than most) and that other guy (Fraser?) perfectly captures the innocent American out to improve the world. . . and possibly, Gong Li is also in it? I'd like to see the old one, too. Happy reading.

message 25272: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) I just finished The Quiet American and was pleasantly surprised. There was something in Greene's style that appealed to me. I'll definitely be reading more of his work.

Next I'll be reading one of King's Bachman books, The Long Walk .

I read the reviews of Room and was convinced that I would 'like' it (or at least as much as you can like something that horrific), but I hated it. I dont remember having such strong feelings of dislike as I had for this one......then again, based on the reviews I am in the minority on that one

Sheila (marblepdck) | 17 comments I am getting ready to start The Kitchen House for my work book club, looks really good

message 25277: by Becca (new)

Becca (beccabeccabooklover) I'm quarter of the way through A Storm of Swords: Steel and Snow: 1. I'm really enjoying it a lot more than the second book. I'm so happy the Game of Thrones series started on tv otherwise I would not have known that this series existed! Loving it and a kind of fantasy novel that I enjoy.

message 25278: by Flora (new)

Flora Smith (bookwormflo) I'm about 2/3 thru Garden Spells which I really like. And I'm still trying to get into Titus Groan

message 25279: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Lesyshen | 6 comments I just finished Oregon Experiment which was not good. So many things happened in the book that were so unbelievable.

I did read Art of Fielding which is an Amazing Debut novel about baseball (which I hate). A must read!

Cate (The Professional Fangirl) (chaostheory08) | 89 comments I recently finished: The Second Messiah by Glenn Meade ARC and here's my review http://wp.me/p1CKWU-7E

Now reading: Journal of a Schoolyard Bully Notes on Noogies, Wet Willies, and Wedgies by Farley Katz and The October Five by Mobashar Qureshi .

message 25284: by Dana * (new)

Dana * (queenofegypt) I just finished Sleep Toward Heaven which was a touching look at the life of a few people, including an inmate, involved in a tragic crime. Several points of view, each player has a profound yet unknown affect on the others.
Recommend.

Betsy (mistymtladi) | 511 comments Hmm. the above post was all ready on my screen,so I pushed post to get a blank square. I guess I should have erased it,but then I didn't write it???? Since I been here last- back in late June sometime, I read about 14 books. Its'summer vacation I can read non-stop and often do.
One of the books I read was Crooked letter Crooked Letter and while I'll agree the plot was predictable the characters were outstanding. I found myself talking to them as if they could actually hear me .

message 25290: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (marblepdck) | 17 comments Betsy, I really enjoyed Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter too. Yes it was very predictable (especially the 'brothers'), but the charecters were so well developed that I didnt care.

message 25291: by Ioana (new)

Ioana After Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin (disturbing and very informative, but way too long abd somewhat repetitive) I needed something totally different. So I am reading A Cure to Die For: A Medical Thriller now. An easy, fast read that I really enjoy.

message 25292: by tiasreads (new)

tiasreads I just finished The Hidden Diary of Marie Antoinette and it was... not awful. It was good enough to finish, but not something I'd want to read again. And now, shockingly, I have no more books in my house that I have not read. That's a sad state of affairs!!

message 25293: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) The Long Walk was excellent. King can make even walking seem like a terrifying experience.

Next I'm going to pick up The Catcher in the Rye . Believe it or not, I've never read it before and I'm pushing 25.

message 25295: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (ldk1970) I'm reading The Best Laid Plans. It's funny and has stimulated my interest in politics, but I can't help but copy-edit it as I read!

message 25296: by Karen M (new)

that is amazing. I don't know what I'd do if there wasn't a single book in my house that I hadn't read...

message 25300: by Jane (new)

Jane | 27 comments Recently finished State of Wonder by Ann Patchett and thought it was great... SO much to ponder upon finishing that one.

Now I'm reading Gone (Gone, #1) by Michael Grant , and need to also find my next "adult" book to read. It's not as if my shelves are anywhere near empty (Suzanne, that is AMAZING! To finish all the books I own is a perennial resolution...), but sometimes an excess of choices can feel overwhelming!

Maybe I'll go with Walking to Gatlinburg by Howard Frank Mosher ... it's been sitting there unread for a while!
