Glenda (glenda-r) Just finished reading The King of Lies by John Hart. Easy read and very entertaining. Not rocket science, but not drivel either.

Next up is Room by Emma Donoghue. This book has gotten rave reviews for the most part so I'm looking forward to it.

Thanks for the information. This was my first, but won't be my last.

message 25213: by Glenda (new)

Glenda (glenda-r) Two days ago I sat down to read Room by Emma Donoghue. I read about 20 pages of it and I was so depressed I had to put it down. I'm sure it has a lot to do with my state of mind, but I am definitely not ready to read this book. Has anyone else felt like this? The book got rave reviews and I will pick it up in the future, but not this minute. I decided to read One for the Money by Janet Evanovich until I get out of my funk.

I had a similar reaction to Room. I pushed through and continued with it, but it often made me incredibly uncomfortable. It is a good book, I won't dispute that, but I think you really do have to be in a certain place (mentally) to actually read it and get something out of it besides depression/discomfort.

Good luck with it. Taking time to read a more uplifting book sounds like a good plan.

message 25224: by [deleted user] (new)

Yesterday, I started reading The 19th Wife by David Ebershoff. It's pretty interesting. It interweaves two stories. One is about Brigham Young's 19th wife, who breaks away from the Mormon religion. The other story is a mystery about a woman and her son who lived in a modern-day polygamist religious cult.

I have been reading Freedom by Jonathan Franzen for what seems like forever. I'm at least halfway through it but I just can't seem to finish it. Maybe it's time to give up.

One book I won't be reading is To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf, since I already read it. It was an interesting book, but once was enough.

Venuskitten | 26 comments I am reading Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld. I read it some years ago but I am not enjoying it much this time. Nothing seems to be happening (I am one third of the way through the book) and the central character is an immature and self-centred young woman who complains about loneliness and feeling excluded but does nothing to encourage anyone who tries to be friends.

Now reading on the nook: Leaves of the Fall by Violet Yates and an ARC of The Second Messiah by Glenn Meade .

I decided to put Mistresss Revenge by Tamar Cohen on hold because it's hard to get into.

I'm about halfway through now and I have to say I'm liking it a lot. It's fast-paced and the dilemmas of the characters are interesting. So far, I'd recommend it and since it's just over 300 pages, it's a quick read. Depending on how the rest of it goes, I just might pick up the next one in the series (once I'm done with my current to-read list, that is).

I think we've all been there before. Kudos to you for realizing it, stepping back, and trying something else. I often don't do that, and then feel guilty bc I know my "attitude" probably factored into myself not enjoying it as much as I would have otherwise. Hopefully you'll be able to come back later and enjoy it more.

I have a used copy on order. Waiting for my shipment to arrive. I loved Cold Mountain and Gap Creek : The Story Of A Marriage was kindly recommended to me as a smiliar read.

I'm still reading The Flame Trees of Thika: Memories of an African Childhood and just started Rin Tin Tin: The Life and the Legend.

Kristi, you are absolutely right about attitude at the time of reading. I have thought about this a lot due to the fact that I hardly ever quit reading a book unless it is just terrible. I realized that I had been following the Casey Anthony trial very closely and was heartbroken about that entire situation. Also, I have a precious little grandson who is almost 3 years old and I found myself thinking about him and getting very sad.

Sorry if this is a ramble, but I'm glad I finally realized it and maybe I will finish Room later and maybe I won't.

Glenda (glenda-r) I just finished One for the Money by Janet Evanovich. I think everyone except me has read this series, at least a few books from it, but I am just now starting. The book was delightful and just what I needed.

I have now started Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin. I'm only about 4% into it but it promises to be a good one for me.

I'm actually reading my first King for the second time. When I first read Carrie, I was 11 years old. If you've read it, you probably have an idea what kind of an impact it had on me. It certainly hasn't lost its power in these 14 years between readings.

Omg, I can't believe you read Carrie when you were 11. O.O I hope your second reading is less intense!
