I visited a lovely little independent bookstore (which is a little unusual in Singapore) for the first time. It was so lovely and I had so much fun and then left with 4 books I can't wait to get started on :)

by Wim Klinkert (no photo)There is no "Big Book" about the Netherlands in 14-18 yet, but since Wim Klinkert is a prominent Dutch military historian, this "the Neutral Netherlands: the First World War 1914-1918" looked like and proved to be one of the best substitutes yet. It focusses on the reality of a neutrality policy as seen by 9 main actors: Queen Wilhelmina, the Chief of Staff, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs etc. Touches on a lot of high-level issues as a result.
Bought during a short stop in Eindhoven, a third through it in a mere 3h.

Good grief, Alisa.......you cleaned up. A couple of those look like something I would enjoy. Book stores totally destroy my will power!!!
And it was too easy! A wide variety in this bunch should be fun when I get to them, and who knows when that will happen.

It is a deadly place to go - floors and nooks and rows - you can actually lose people in here - it happened to us especially if they are bending down and looking at the books on lower shelves.

It is the second hand book store that totally overwhelms me. I love old and sometimes obscure books and they peek from every shelf. I spend most of my time sitting on the floor looking at the bottom shelves. I think if I took a truck with me, I could fill it up!!!!
Powell's has new and used, in fact the Madeleine Albright book I purchased was used (but in excellent shape.) Jill, if you ever get to Portland, OR it will be a must stop for you. I would even be willing to meet you there to help you haul away your new found treasures! :-)

I was in a used bookstore in Salt Lake City this week that was pretty big, but found nothing worth spending my money on. That had to be a first for me and a bookstore! There may have been something worthwhile there, but I could not find it.
Today I made a great purchase and for a good cause. Maybe some of you are familiar with the refugee situation here in Croatia (Croatia being the border with Schengen). We have been having alot of humanitarian iniciatives to help the refugees and one of those is happening today in a coffeshop/library "Booksa" in Zagreb. Throughtout its active years people donated alot of books and they decided to sell the books for 10 HRK apiece (around 1.5 EUR or USD) to help finance the volunteer iniciatives on our borders. So...I went there and got 10 new books for 100 HRK and I am naturally thrilled. This is what I got:

Dimitri, I'm currently reading Piracy: A Complete history by Angus Konstam and I love his writing style. I hope his Jutland is just as good.

Second that : So far I've only read his Osprey booklets about pirates*, but even within that constraint his style shows through.*

You are going to have to build another room just to house your books, Dmitri!! What a wonderful assortment
Back-to-school season seems like the perfect time to visit the bookstore. Picked up a few things yesterday on my perpetually out-of-control to-read list. I heard Diana Nyad speak last week about her epic swim from Cuba to Key West, and am really looking forward to reading the book.
