RECENTLY ACQUIRED BOOKS
A good idea. To start off I was recently given a copy of a new book; "Churchill's Dilemma: The Real Story Behind the Origins of the 1915 Dardanelles Campaign" by the sister of the author and she arranged to have it signed by her brother.

I just purchased a 1977 hard back copy of "The Fields of War" edited by Philip Warner, recently re-released as; "Letters Home from the Crimea: A Young Cavalryman's Campaign".
by Temple GodmanReview:
"Welcome reprint of the letters home from the battlefront of 1854-55 by Richard Temple-Godman, subaltern in the Fifth Dragoon Guards, who rode in the charge of the heavy brigade at Balaclava, survived two Crimean winters with hardly a scratch and brought all three of his horses home with him after Sebastopol surrendered. Masses of social and military detail, delightfully easy to read; many pictures from his family album (he died a major general), which established his standing, even if some of them are far from the Crimea." - Kirkus (UK)

Ok thanks for the link. ;)
This has been high on my to-read list ever since it came out and I picked up the hardback today. It was a top book of 2010 on a couple of lists I have seen and heard great things about it so am really looking forward to digging into it. Not sure when that will be, hopefully soon!

Tom wrote: "I buy way more books than I can read."One of those terrible diseases that many of us have. And my to-read list is way too long as well. I keep thinking I read enough that is should get smaller, but it doesn't.
Ha! Yes, and a certain popular online retailer brought out symptoms in me yesterday with their 4 for the price of 3 sale, so I now have these four offerings whisking their way to my doorstep. When I will actually get to reading them is another question, but they are all on my to-read list and now they get added to the growing pile!

I received my copy of "Aftermath" by Nir Rosen today. I had mentioned this book in another thread and after reading more about its contents decided I'd like to have a copy myself. I've only had a quick browse though the book but it looks like it has the potential to be a very interesting read. The first sentence starts off like this:
"Abdel Sattar Al-Musawi's decomposed remains lay on the ground above his grave. His older brothers sat beside them, holding them, crying. Although he had been arrested in 1998 and killed in 2001, they had just learned of his death three days earlier, and now they had come to claim his body. 'His crime was loving freedom', said his friend Abdel Karim, who had come to find his own brother too."
by Nir Rosen
I have been after a copy of this book for some time and finally managed to aquire one; "Henri IV of France: His Reign and Age" by Vincent J. Pitts.
by Vincent J. PittsI also received my copy of; "The German Army at Ypres 1914" by Jack Sheldon which is the fifth book in this series covering the German Army on the Western Front during WW1.
by Jack Sheldon
I hope so, Aussie. I think I will, especially because it's written by a war veteran's son, which makes it that much more personal. Looking forward to it. :)
I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Have you seen Clint Eastwood's movie on the book, along with the follow up movie covering the Japanese perspective; "Letters from Iwo Jima"?
I've just picked up from my Post Office Box the following books:

by Patrick K. O'DonnellAnd a 1909 hard back edition of:
by G.F.R Henderson
Came home to another book in the mail today. Its nice to come home to a good book. I think im going to enjoy this one..
by Richard S. BrownleeGray Ghosts of the Confederacy is a history of the Confederate guerrillas who—under the ruthless command of such men as William C. Quantrill and “Bloody Bill” Anderson—plunged Missouri into a bloody, vicious conflict of an intensity unequaled in any other theater of the Civil War. Among their numbers were Frank and Jesse James and Cole and James Younger, who would later become infamous by extending the tactic they had learned during the war into civilian life.
Definitely a wonderful feeling, whether it is a package of books I ordered or a package containing a surprise book someone sent me for no particular reason!
I totally agree, I feel very aggrieved when I open my Post Office box trap door and there is no card waiting for me saying I have parcels to collect!I picked up this book today at a remainder book shop:
by Fergus NicollShah Jahan was the ruler of the Mughal empire, his name translating literally from the Persian as ‘King of the World’. After ruthlessly suppressing his rivals, he went on to promote Mughal artistic and architectural achievements to the zenith of their creativity. He is responsible not only for the Taj Mahal - the tomb to his beloved wife Mumtaz - but also for the Pearl Mosque, the Red Fort, Jama Masid in Delhi, the Shalimar Gardens of Kashmir and the priceless Peacock Throne.
Just received an interesting book from a colleague
by
Erving Goffman original print. Looks really interesting even though it is a 2nd hand book, which I have an aversion to.
I came across a very interesting book today in one of my favourite second-hand book shops; "Henry Clifford V.C."
(no cover) Henry Clifford V.C. His Letters & Sketches from the Crimea by Henry Clifford V.C.
A few books that arrived yesterday:
by Michael Carver - seems interesting, 43 short biographies on military commanders, each is by a different author.
by Alfred Thayer Mahan
I stubbled across this book today at a local bookshop and decided I had to have a copy.; "Batavia" by Peter FitzSimons. It will be interesting to see how it compares with Mike Dash's book; "Batavia's Graveyard" which I thought was an excellent account of this incident in Australian history.
by Peter FitzSimons
by Mike Dash
I picked these up today from my faithful Post Office Box:
by Fergus NicollSupposedly offering an account from the Mahdi's point of view - should be interesting!
by Jonathan Harris
I purchased a copy of "Jerusalem: The Biography" by Simon Sebag Montefiore today, looks very good :)
