I have to go and watch my son's U21 soccer semi final tomorrow. Although's he's played since he was 6 this is the first time ever that his team has finished in the top four, so he's just as excited as he would have been at 8 (but trying to play it cool!)

Would like to go somewhere special for our 60th birthdays in 2016 - but no plans yet other than start saving :)

There has always been discussion on whether an author should review their own work or not, but I came across these couple by a popular and reknown author Patrick Rothfuss that made me laugh!

I didn't realise that some authors were actually reviewing their own books. Conflict of interest springs to mind.

Not necessarily huge. We had been saving up for years to do a European river cruise last year - the one that got cancelled while we were in Hungary. So we used the insurance payout money from that to pay for this trip. Took a long time to save for the original trip so may not get I much saved in 2 years. I'd be happy with a week in Margaret River :)

I disagree with it wholeheartedly Vicki and think it should be obvious that they will like their own books! They shouldn't need to rate them...

I wouldn't do that, Vicki!! I did that last year, Bette - I think you need to clear your cookies or cache or something... Hold on - let me check...

Is it the Recommendations section? Where it says "Because you read ____, a few similar books..."

This is what I posted when I figured out what I had to do:

FOR ANYONE WHO ACCIDENTALLY, OR DELIBERATELY, CLICKS [HIDE] ON THEIR LITTLE HOME PAGE RECOMMENDATIONS WIDGET, HERE'S WHAT TO DO.

You need to clear your cookies and/or cache for whichever browser you are using. (I was on my iPad --> Settings --> Safari --> Clear Cookies and Data - this will close all tabs you currently have open and seems to mean you need to log back into websites you are currently logged into, but once you log back into Goodreads, your recommendations are back on the home page!)

message 13079: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments I don't know how you clear your cookies or cache in other browsers, but try googling "clear cookies (or cache) in internet explorer" or mozilla firefox, or whatever you're using. Hope that helps!!

He's a funny man! I sometimes dip into his blog to see if there is news of his long awaited third book and he 's always up to something amusing. Could be why the book is taking so long.....
Still his fans won't mind if it's as good as his first two ;)

I've seen a few here and there. It's a bit weird, because you'd have to assume that if you wrote it, you like it.

Speaking as someone on the author side of the fence, it's even a bit weird reading reviews about your own work, and wanting to 'like' them, but not wanting to be overstepping the mark, versus not wanting to read them in case they hate your work, but realising that it's useful so that you can learn what readers do and don't like and where your writing hasn't worked.

And then there's the issue of authors commenting on reviews of their own work. That gets even weirder.

There's a whole realm about author etiquette out there that's very undefined. And now I'm wondering if I should have even said all that ;)

The Patrick Rothfuss stuff is hilarious, though! Poor bloke - hadn't even finished writing the book and people were already starring and reviewing...

It must be hard Leonie:) I know as a reader and reviewer though, that I am thrilled when an author "likes" my review. Comments are good too I think, as long as they are not derogatory to the writer of the review. In the same way, the writer of the review shouldn't attack the author either...

I think it must be really difficult as an author to read negative comments people make about your work after you have sweated long and hard over your writing. There aren't many other professions where you have to put so much of yourself out there in the public domain. But I guess you can never please everyone and you must have to grow very thick skins to ignore some of the comments people make.

I'm in awe of what writers do and I think Brenda is right in that respect is the most important thing. I also love it when an author 'likes' or comments on my review.

It can be difficult to read negative comments, but we (as authors) have placed our work in a public forum deliberately, and we'd be silly to expect that everyone will like it. Reviews have an enticing, yet horribly scary fascination for me, because I like to know whether people like my book, but at the same time I need to recognise that the reader has just as valid a viewpoint as the writer and that if they say something I don't like I just have to suck it up and deal with it. (And not comment!)

I understand that there are some authors who've taken issue with reviews and then argued (publicly!) with the reviewer. That's just unprofessional and reflects poorly on the writer.

It's nice to hear that people seem to generally like to have an author 'like' their review.

Ugh, there's one author I used to (very past-tense) follow on social media. Literally every second thing he would post would be a review of one of his books or someone talking about how great his books were - or a negative review, and how stupid was this person that they didn't get his brilliance? Or someone talking about pirating his books and how wow he's such a poor tortured artist aren't these book-pirates really mean?

I got so incredibly sick of it. There's checking reader reviews and then there's being obsessed with yourself.
