Carolyn | 9869 comments I really enjoyed hearing Eleanor Catton talk at the Sydney Writers festival last Thursday. She talked quite a lot about The Luminaries, how she first got the ideas she wanted to write about in the book and then spent two years reading 19th century literature so that she would have the language and style correct. She also spoke about how each of the characters was assigned a zodiac sign based on their occupation so that was something I hadn't picked up. She told quite a few funny stories along the way about her family and her writing process and kept the audience well and truly entertained for the whole time.

I now have 5 jars (the Master Foods mustard type jar with the red lid) of cumquat marmalade. My sweet curry is still bubbling away, waiting for the final few ingredients, but it's for Wednesday night's dinner. Tonight, Leek & Potato soup as made a few weeks ago in the slow cooker & retrieved from the freezer. I can recommend these books by Isabel Webb:Preserving with a Microwave: Bottling Fruits, Jams, Jellies, Pickles, and Sauces and Low-sugar microwave bottling: natural fruit preserving in the microwave.which even have a method of sealing jars so the button pops down as the contents cool.

Yes it certainly was! I was also sitting next to a lovely group of women who were telling me about all the events they had been to that day and which sessions they were planning to go to the following day. They were having such a good time! So now I'm inspired to try to take a couple of days off next time and go to more.

That would have been awesome Carolyn. I wish I'd known or understood more about the astrological meanings when I read it. I hadn't really understood what they meant until I watched the review on The Book Club. I may need to go back now and just reread the beginning of the chapters to see if I can make sense of it.

I don't know anything about astrology either so most of it went over my head too. I still enjoyed the book without that understanding, but if it was important to the author in the structure of the book and describing the characters and the events then it would have been really handy to have an appendix or explanation of the charts and headings in the book.

The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy Synopsis:

When Queenie Hennessy discovers that Harold Fry is walking the length of England to save her, and all she has to do is wait, she is shocked. Her note to him had explained she was dying from cancer. How can she wait?A new volunteer at the hospice suggests that Queenie should write a second letter; only this time she must tell Harold the truth. Composing this letter, the volunteer promises, will ensure Queenie hangs on. It will also atone for the secrets of the past. As the volunteer points out, ‘It isn’t Harold who is saving you. It is you, saving Harold Fry.’

This is that letter. A letter that was never sent.

Told in simple, emotionally-honest prose, with a mischievous bite, this is a novella about a woman who falls in love but chooses not to claim it. It is about friendship and kindness as well as the small victories that pass unrecorded. It is about the truth and the significance – the gentle heroism – of a life lived alone.

Queenie thought her first letter would be the end of the story. She was wrong. It was just the beginning…

Expected publication date Nov 2014. I can't find a ibsn for it yet to post as New Release.

I just wanted to let everyone know that we are off on 2 weeks holidays tomorrow. The first week is in Port Macquarie, the second near Forster:) But I'll be online as often as I can - not as much as usual of course!! Happy reading everyone:)

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Only one on there that I want is First Victory: 1914 - but $9 shipping for a $6 book is a bit much I think.

message 12092: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Yes it's also better to do the "click and collect" as you don't pay postage - but you have to order a certain amount for that (not sure how much)

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) $40 minimum for click and collect. Sigh.

Thanks for the 'heads up' Veronica! I just ordered 6 books for $28 as well. I also had to restrain myself to keep it to 6 ;)

I love Port Macquarie - it's a great place to go at any time of year. Have a great trip Brenda!

Just check in now and again to tell us what you've been reading ;)

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) An author I follow on Facebook just posted about spotting something on social media about someone pirating one of his books. It is so transparently a "Validate that I'm right and these people are really mean and I'm a tortured artist :(" post.

I dunno why I even follow him, from what I gather he apparently spends 5% of his time writing and 95% of this time googling himself and looking at reviews of his own books.

I read a post once where an author was ripping into someone who said that they never pay for ebooks. Someone then had a brilliant reply, that at least someone was reading their books!
btw I never pirate books:)
