Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9989 comments Used my slow cooker during the week to make a Dutch stew called Hachee, Beef & Onions & red wine & veggies & spices, served with Potatoes & red cabbage from a jar like you buy in delis. And now is perfect weather for it! Got 5 double meals (me & hubby) plus 3 lunches for my Mum, all tucked away in the freezer.
Today on my walk, LONG SLEEVES!! and my fingerless gloves, & could have used my beanie but forgot it. Wind so fierce it nearly ripped the book out of my hands a few times!

Sounds lovely Marianne and yummy too!! And you're so organised. But can I just ask....are you walking and reading? How do you do that? Amazing!!!

Wow that sounds delicious Marianne! And you are very brave - why didn't you use your treadmill?

message 11808: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (nicehotcupoftea) | 838 comments I used to walk and read as a child until I fell over, scraped my knees badly, and suffered the humiliation of some big girls laughing at me! Tried it recently but the reading glasses are problematic for safe footing and I think I'll land heavier these days!

I don't know how you do it Marianne, I'd end up in a pot hole with a sprained ankle if I tried to read and walk. Well done for braving the weather this morning. It was too cold and blustery for me - I wimped out of my usual Sunday morning walk and went on the treadmill with an audiobook.

I walk with an Ipod tucked into my pocket so I can listen to a book at the same time. It works well unless I meet someone I know and they speak to me. Then I miss whole chunks of the book while I reply to the person and scramble to pause the Ipod!

That happens to me when I'm listening to my book at the gym, Phrynne!! Fortunately, most of the times when my workout is a walk on the treadmill, the people I know don't do workouts on those days, but if I miss a day and my routine gets thrown out of order so that I end up walking on a day I don't normally, sometimes they talk to me briefly and the same thing happens!!

Valerie (nicehotcupoftea) | 838 comments That's why I love the stop/play button on the earphones!

message 11814: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9989 comments I have been walking and reading for years. I am known in this area for it, sometimes I meet patients at the hospital (where I work) who say "I know you, you're that lady who reads while she walks. How do you do that?" People stop me in the street to ask how I do it. I do most of my walking on the treadmill before breakfast, but, on my days off, once a day I will hit the street, check to PO box in town (maybe there will be a book for me.....), pick up needed groceries, and I walk as far as the beach where I walk barefoot on the firm sand to prevent me from getting plantar fascitis (a tip from my chiropractor).
The secret is.......

PERIPHERAL VISION!!!
Even holding a book in front of me, I can still see enough around it to know if someone is coming, or something is in my way. I ALWAYS stop at the kerb so I don't step in front of a vehicle, but if the book is very absorbing, I might be a bit less aware of other pedestrians on the path, so I do have to say sorry now and then. And I will admit that occasionally I trip, or ALMOST bump into the back of parked cars, but generally I am injury-free and I get a heck of a lot of books read that way.

With that slow cooker meal, I chopped up all the ingredients the day before, then, when I got up to walk on the treadmill, I turned the cooker on and filled it up. Back to it every now and then to stir or add something else. By the time I stopped walking it smelled divine. In fact the smell woke hubby up, he got out of bed to see what was going on. By the time it was done, my cheapest cuts of meat were so tender they were falling to bits. Yum!!

Sally906 | 89 comments Whoo hoo another public holiday in Darwin - this is May Day. Mind you 3 long weekends in a row have played havoc at work but will settle down until the June long weekend.

Still while it is stressful at work trying to fit 5 days work into 4, it's been great for my reading and I am gradually poking my nose above water when it comes to my ARCs - got a bit greedy and had more than I could cope with. I like to have the review out the week it is released, but a couple have been a bit late and I am getting terribly stressed over letting the publisher and author down.

Plus I I am a mood reader so not coping with having to read a book rather than choosing to read it. Sounds silly but that is how it is :)

I just lost my photo because I went to see if there was a little box to resize, but I went one step too far and deleted my profile pic! Now I can't remember where I originally got my photo from! So I'll have a new profile pic shortly!

message 11823: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments Hmm, the little thumbnail pics cut half my face off, but that will do for a while, I guess. But that still doesn't answer your question, Bette - I think Brenda's right, and you need to crop it before you import it into GR.

I know! I like blue, but my pic looks wrong when I look at it now because it's missing the green!! I think it might be a photo from my mum's camera so I could probably find it if I checked her computer… But maybe I'll get more used to this one in the meantime - what do they say - a change is as good as a holiday? Hmm, not so sure about that! I'd rather the holiday!

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) I shrunk it via printer then scanned it back into my Photo Gallery and copied from there. It looked really weird so I've deleted it.

The one I have has cut off half my face and shows up all my freckles (I was too lazy to on make-up this morning). What do you think of this latest?

Do you think??! I think I look just the same!! They're kind of old - taken over 12 months ago, but my first was only taken several months before this one, so I haven't aged that much in between!!

Sally906 | 89 comments My physical TBR pile consists of 100s of books languishing on shelves, in cupboards and under beds – then there is another couple of 100 virtually languishing in my various e-Readers. Some nights I can hear the physical books sighing and muttering amongst themselves but when I approach the bookshelf they go into a reproachful silence. I think they are plotting something as the murmurings are getting louder.

I found a review book on the floor the other morning, I think the long-time TBR books pushed it in a fit of jealous rage. I asked who had done the deed but the books all looked at me in a stony silence.

I have moved the review books to their own safe shelf away from the jealous mob – and gently lifted the oldest book in my TBR pile off the bookshelf and placed in the prized position of my bedside table.

The mutterings eased last night.

Should I be scared?

Valerie (nicehotcupoftea) | 838 comments Sally, I have a great image in my mind of the "jealous TBR books" pushing the review book off the shelf!
You should tread very carefully around them I think.

message 11846: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 9869 comments Sally, maybe your TBR pile is reaching a critical mass and you need to split them up into smaller piles and distribute them around the house to some new locations. Then it will be harder for them to plot together (and your family won't realise how big your TBR pile actually is).

LOL, I love it! If you aren't an author yet, you should be! My TBR bookcases (yes plural) are downstairs in the front room with the treadmill, so I can't hear them at night, but sometimes I come down in the morning to find a pile toppled.....maybe the same thing is happening!
