B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) 50 signs you are addicted to reading:

This was mentioned in another group I'm in and I thought it good to share here. Although from the amount of chatter in Aussie Readers, I think it's pretty clear we are indeed all addicted to reading!

Brenda, should this be a Just for Fun stand alone thread?

I popped into Woollies very briefly yesterday and it was busy - not as bad as Christmas Eve, but I was very glad I didn't need to buy much more than bananas and one more pack of hot cross buns - because I realised they won't be making any more after today :-( But some people were doing a full-on grocery shop - I think I'd have been driven insane within 10 minutes!!

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9989 comments I need a new blender as the one that has served me faithfully for, oh probably 20 years is on its last legs. Been looking at product reviews on line and leaning towards this http://www.productreview.com.au/p/opt... as I didn't see anything in the shops that comes close to this price for the power. I realise the reviews are incentivised, but still, I also looked at this forum http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archiv... and the support looks good.
Anyone have any experience with these?

How much time did it take? Did you stop for long at places?

My husband and I travelled from Sydney to Perth on the Indian Pacific a couple of years ago on my dream holiday:) It was wonderful. We stopped at Broken Hill, Adelaide, Cook and Kalgoorlie before arriving in Perth. Three nights on the train with tours at each of the places we stopped, then we spent 5 days in Perth, which was amazing, before we flew home. All in all a wonderful holiday which I would be very happy to repeat!

That does sound like a dream holiday! I'd love to know more...like what you did in each place. I've not heard of Cook. I'll have to look it up.

We loved the trip, Dina! It was nearly twenty-five years ago though, so I'm sure some things have changed. It took three days plus one. What I mean to say, is that it should have taken three days, but a goods train ahead of us derailed, so there was an extra twenty four hours on our trip. It was fine for us, but not so great for those sitting up!

The food and service in first class was fabulous, as you'd expect, and our cabin was extremely comfortable. First class had a car where you could sit and watch the scenery in comfortable chairs, and even a piano. We played lots of cards with people we'd met, looked out the windows and really enjoyed ourselves.

The scenery was wonderful. We were a bit disappointed that we travelled through the blue mountains at night when it was dark, though. There were several stops where you could get off briefly - Cook, Rawlinna, Kalgoorlies (there was a quick bus tour included) and of course we paused in Adelaide, but weren't able to get off. It was first and foremost a journey.

I'd do it again, but it might take a while to save up now, with the kids at uni!

message 11734: by Dina (new)

Dina Roberts | 91 comments It sounds amazing!

I think you're right though about the extra hours not being fun for people having to sit up.

So, the stops are short. It's more about getting from one place to the other...and being comfortable and seeing nice scenery.

I imagine it's better than driving. I'd be worried about finding toilets. And getting lost in the outback. Running out of water. Stuff like that. The train deal sounds much better.

Yes, lots of reading;) At Broken Hill it was about 2 hours, Adelaide was quite a long stop as they changed some carriages over (including ours). We had time to meet up with some relatives and catch up. It's also the place where some people get off to catch The Ghan, which then goes up to Darwin. We were at Cook for about 1/2 an hour, and several hours in Kalgoorlie.

We have some friends who are doing the trip next year and are taking their car on the train. They have a special carriage for carrying cars:) Then after they've had their fill of Perth and the surrounding area, they will drive back to Newcastle, taking about a month to do so:)
