Task 15.9A Always Looking Up: The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist by Michael J Fox
15.9B The title of Michael J Fox's book certainly reflects what he is - in spite of his hardships dealing with Parkinson's, he has remained positive and an inspiration. I always try to look up, and although I'm not as active in helping others as MJF is, I think that this book reflects me fairly well.

This is one of the best history books I've ever read. Just thought I'd share.
15.1 Wedding Bells Are Ringing
Life As We Knew It (new/blue) and Roller Skates (old/borrowed)
15.4 Learn Your Numbers
Alma Mater and Petey
Rita Mae Brown and I are both 4s. Two aspects of a 4's personality are "struggle against limits" and "service." In Petey, the titular character has cerebral palsy, but spent his entire life in asylums and homes because he was born before anyone knew what cerebral palsy was--they just thought he was an "idiot" (a medical term at the time). He struggled to speak so he could make his wishes known. Most of the other characters in the book are people who came into Petey's life and helped and served him--doctors, attendants at the facilities where he lived, and a boy who befriends him.

10.3 Book Goodreader is currently reading: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Cheri, pg 6, by J K Rowling, 759pp, read 7/6/2010.
10.6 Discrimination: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, 369pp, read 6/27/2010.
Rebecca skloot is a Goodreads author.
As a physician, I found this book humbling. Sometimes we do the wrong thing for the right reasons. Also, we never really communicate well with patients, what we are saying and what they are hearing and understanding are two very different things. A very distrubing book for me.
15.5 Author and his/her top ten book: The City of Your Final Destination and The Towers of Trebizond by Peter Cameron and Rose Macaulay, 589pp read 6/2/2010 and 7/8/2010.
The Towers of Trebizond is a very odd book. It starts out as if it is going to be a lighthearted "Travels with My Aunt" sort of story, and morphs into a short meditation on faith, grace and guilt. I definitely see the connection with [bookThe City of your Final Destination:], both are short books that on the surface don't seem to be about anything, but are actually describing something deep.
15.6 Portugal/Portugese author OR African setting AND Second longest book of an author: Land of a Thousand Hills and Whitechapel Gods byRosamond Halsey Carr and S.M. Peters, 609pp, read 6/3/2010 and 7/7/2010.
15.7 India AND what you would change about country state city: Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts, 933pp, read 7/8/2010.
First of all, Shantaram is an amazing book - violent, tender, ugly, beautiful, so many contradictions in one book. Caution, don't read this if you have any moral quibbles about criminals and drugs, the protagonist's (and the author's life, if the cover bio means anything) life is a swamp of moral ambiguity. It will make you want to see India.
What I would change about my state - raise of the level of appreciation for education. We actually have fairly good schools, but the people don't value education, and that is ultimately at the root of many of our problems. And we need a new constitution - long story. I have been active in trying to change this situation by financially supporting local schools, volunteering at my kids' school and by supporting the efforts to have a new constitutional convention.
I'd also like to claim a long books ticket - 70 more pages and it would be 1000!
30.4 Science of crime, male and female author: Deja Dead and The Anatomy of Deception by Kathy Reichs and Lawrence Goldstone, 751pp, read 7/4/2010 and 6/3/2010.

25.5
Dirt - Stone Barrington always has a way with the women, and Dirt is no exception. He finds the love of his life in Dirt. Stuart Woods has a way of making you feel you are a fly on the wall, which makes me feel like I am living the story, which is what I like about his books.
Trial By Fire - Ali Reynolds, divorced and out of work, has returned to her home town and gets involved in yet another murder. Following Ali as she solves the mystery makes me feel like I am right there with her, which is what I love about JA Jance's books.
30.5
My contribution to the party is my Chocolate Chip Coffee cake. It stands out because people think of it as being a heavy cake but the sour cream makes it very light.

I read The Vow: The Kim and Krickitt Carpenter Story, which has a picture of a car on the front.
25.5 Share the Summer Love
My current favorite genre is romantic thrillers, so I read Return to Me by Christy Reece. I read it mainly because it is the second in a series, but it was an interesting story about human trafficking of children and it reconnected with familiar characters. I enjoyed it because it was a very fast paced story with a romance worked into the plot.
My other favorite genre (I wouldn't put it as second because they pretty much tie) is detective/mysteries. I read S is for Silence by Sue Grafton, which definitely fit the genre. I was guessing till the end about the murderer, and I really liked how she included memories from other characters.
25.10 Let's Play the Name Game
I read To Catch an Heiress by Julia Quinn (mostly because it was something the library already had!) and then I read Dog on It by Spencer Quinn (a new author for me I think I will keep up with).

20.4 - Always The Bridesmaid, Never The Bride - Shelley's Task - Anniversary Gift
Summer is the time for weddings, which means that it is also the time for anniversaries. Use this list of anniversary gifts to find the traditional or modern gift that corresponds to the number of seasonal challenges that you have participated in (including this summer challenge).
This is our 9th Season so...
1st - Paper or Clocks
2nd - Cotton or China
3rd - Leather or Crystal/Glass
4th - Fruit/Flowers or Appliances
5th - Wood or Silverware
6th - Candy/Iron or Wood
7th - Wool/Copper or Desk Sets
8th - Bronze/Pottery or Linens/Lace
9th - Pottery/Willow or Leather
Then read a book with a gift that you could give for that anniversary in the title. For instance, this summer challenge is the 5th challenge that I (Shelley) am participating in, so I would read a book with a 5 year anniversary gift in the title, such A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (wood) or French Lessons: Adventures with Knife, Fork, and Corkscrew (silverware).
Fifth season- French Lessons by Mayle (I gave it 5 stars!!) Silverware

This cookbook has lots of yummy baked goods from author Eileen Goudge, who also uses food as the backdrop for lots of her novels.
I always bring a couple of dishes to any potluck gathering. I like to bring some type of appetizer and a baked good. One of my favorite baked goodies, which is popular with adults and children alike, is my Miniature Reese Peanut Butter Tarts. Everyone likes Reeses and these disappear quickly!

Must-Read lists abound. Let's create our own! For this task, read a book that is at least 300 pages and tell us whether it is a must-read or not and why.
The Zahir by Paulo Coelho
I would class this book as a must read, especially if you are a fan of either Paulo Coelho or The Alchemist. This book just flowed for me. It was an easy read. I enjoyed the story line and the way that the events played out in the book. The author makes several references to the philosophy that he outlined in The Alchemist. Maybe because this book seemed more like a true story, less like a myth, I found it even a little bit more enjoyable than The Alchemist. I especially liked the character of Mikhail, and reading about his life story.

A. Historical Fiction - To Hold the Crown: The Story of King Henry VII and Elizabeth of York by Jean Plaidy
B. Mystery/Thriller - Blindsighted by Karin Slaughter
C.To Hold the Crown: The Story of King Henry VII and Elizabeth of York by Jean Plaidy. I love reading Historical Fiction because it allows me to see what life was like in another time and place where life was very different from what it is now. This book was a pretty good rendition of the reign of King Henry VII chronicling Henry's obsession with keeping the crown for the Tudor's and the factors in play that fueled that obsession. Additionally, there was a lot of time spent on the character of Henry VIII as a small child and youth, and Katharine of Aragon, as first Arthur's wife and then Henry VIII's betrothed. As such, the author did a good job telling the story of the beginning of the Tudor dynasty.
Blindsighted by Karin Slaughter. My second favorite genre is Mystery/Thriller. I love books with twists and turns, especially ones that surprise me. I really enjoy trying to figure out where the story is going, I have loved that ever since I read my first Agatha Christie mystery in middle school. This book was an excellent example of this genre. There was a lot of page turning action. In addition, the author used a lot of hints and clues as to where the story was going, but in the end, threw in a twist that wasn't easy to see coming. It is the first of a series and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

20.6-List Maker
One Season of Sunshine by Julia London
This book is 392 pages long. It was okay, but not a must-read. It was an easy read, a sweet story, and it wasn't quite a traditional romance (which was good for me, since I'm not a romance reader most of the time anyway!). Still, I can't think of anything remarkable or special about it, so it's not a must-read.

25.8 I had to read 2 books on fairy tales to get the required 400 pgs.

20.3 School May be Out: Mansfield Park by Jane Austen who is listed on the St. John's College Reading List.
20.6 List Maker: The Gap into Ruin: This Day All Gods Die by Stephen R. Donaldson
I read this 5 book series at the behest of my husband, who felt it was a must-read. I don't agree. The series was really hit and miss for me. I enjoyed a few books immensely, hated one passionately, and felt indifferent about another. This specific book was the final and perhaps the best, but you have to read the other books for this to make any sense. Donaldson's concept is to combine elements of Wagner's Ring Cycle into an epic sci-fi struggle. I'm not big on opera or Norse mythology, so I think his efforts were lost on me. And despite the fact that there are several very strong female characters in the series, I must absolutely warn all readers that these books contain terrible, degrading violence against the main female character.

The Forbidden Rose is a romantic suspense about an English spy during the French Revolution; no great weight, but a fast read.
