Bluemoon (bluemoon286) | 1797 comments REPOST

25.5 Favorite Genres. I like alot of differnt types of books so my favorite genre is always changing. Currently my favorite is Mysteries so I read Blood Relations. I like mysteries because I like to see if I can put the pieces of the puzzle together and solve the case. This one was the 6th in the series. These are nice cozy mysteries. I enjoyed this book. It is the sixth in a series about a geneologist in a small town on the Mississippi River who gets pulled into solving crimes. In this book the water level in the river is low exposing a steam ship that sank 80 years ago. There is a glut of tourists to the town to see the wreckage and to see if they can salvage some diamonds that were supposedly on board at the time of sinking. There is a murder which piques the curiosity of the town geologist.

My second favorite genre is Fantasy. I love that I can be transported to a different time and place and get lost in a good story. So I read Dragon Slippers by Jessica Day George. This is a classic fairy tale about an orphan girl. Her aunt and uncle take her and her brother in but they are poor and are having trouble making ends meet. The aunt decides that the girl should be taken to the dragon's den and the family will spread the word that she has been abducted and a prince will come rescue her and marry her. The girl talks her way out of the dragon's den with a pair of slippers from the dragon's stash and decides to go to the big city and find work for herself. Little does she know that with the country on the verge of war she holds the one thing that could save the country.

Both books got 4* from me.

Jessica Day George is a goodreads author.

10.9 You Cannot Open a Book without Learning Something:
A. Non-fiction: I read The Cello Suites: J. S. Bach, Pablo Casals, and the Search for a Baroque Masterpiece by Eric Siblin because I've always wanted to learn to play the cello. I've never done it, because a. I hate to practice and b. I have not one musical bone in my body--no sense of pitch, tempo, or "soul". The capper to this is that I was just recently at a concert where one of these suites was played.

B. Fiction The Cello Player by Michael Kruger

25.3 Virtual Foreign Vacation:
A. Fiction: Been Here a Thousand Years: A Novel by Mariolina Venezia takes place in Italy. I've never been there, but my sister, a friend, and I are going next summer.

B. The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yoko Ogawa was written in Japanese and translated by Stephen Snyder. (I really liked this book and have been recommending it to friends.)

25.5 Share the Summer Love:
A. So Enchanting by Connie Brockway is my kind of Romance--a little historical, a little paranormal (witches in this case), and a little humor. Romances come in such a variety from "Gentle Reads" to the Erotic, that it is nearly always possible to find one to fit my mood.
In this one, Amelie is an alleged witch exiled from London society to the Scottish village of Little Firkin. She is supposed to be guarding Fanny, who supposedly has witchy powers. Romance comes in the form of two handsome men and conflict comes with threatening letters.

B. Oath of Fealty by Elizabeth Moonis an epic fantasy continuing the world created in the Paksenarrion series. The best fantasy creates a believable world and characters reacting in believable ways within that world.
In this world Kieri Phelan, a half-elven mercenary captain, has been named king of Lyonya. In the neighboring kingdom Prince Mikeli is nearly assassinated before his own coronation.
Paksenarrion plays only a minor role in this volume, but a new character, Duke Dorrin has a major role in the way this story plays out.

25.5 In Pale Battalions by Robert Goddard (Historical Fiction)
This is the story of a young woman whose life is shrouded by a murder that takes place prior to her birth, during WWI.
I enjoy historical fiction because it gives me an opportunity to learn about a historical event or time period, while enjoying a good story.

The Pursuit of Happyness by Chris Gardner (Biography, Autobiography, Memoir)
This is a story of a man who triumphs over homelessness and single fatherhood, to beccome a successful stockbroker.
I enjoy biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs because I enjoys learning about the lives of others and how their life experiences effect who they are.

El 10 POINT TASKS
10.2 - "The (Fill In The Blank) Who..."
For this task find and read a book whose title follows the formula "The (insert noun here) Who (insert verb here)...".
The Man Who Turned Into Himself: A Novel, David Ambrose.

10.5 - If You Can't Go To The Beach...Bring The Beach To You
Read a book that has a beach scene on the cover.
I'll Steal You Away by Niccolò Ammaniti I'll Steal You Away, Niccolo Ammaniti.

15 POINT TASK
15.7 - "You Must Be The Change You Want To See In The World."
June 7, 1893 marks the date of Gandhi's first act of civil disobedience. In memory of this event...
A.Read a novel that takes place in India OR written by an author who was born in India OR a non-fictional book about the country.
AND
B. Tell us about something you would like to change about the country/state/city where you live and what you have done or would do to see it changed.
A. Midnight's Children, Salman Rushdie.
B. Right now my biggest beef with the city I live in is their bus system. It might seem like a lame thing to concern oneself with, but I don't have a car so I'm dependent on the bus system which is poorly funded. (More specifically the funds are poorly organized.) The preferred method for dealing with lack of funds is to cut buses in some of the more run-down neighborhoods, though in reality its the people living in those neighborhoods who can't afford any other mode of transportation and a lot of their livelihoods are dependent upon the bus. Instead of raising the fare and/or cutting more lines, it seems to me their budget just needs to be reorganized. Especially important considering this is considered a good tourist town. Additionally while the city has made more steps to becoming a more bike-friendly environment, it's still lacking in some of the essentials like actual bike lanes in heavily bike-trafficked areas.

20 POINT TASK
20.10 - Group Reads
Read One Of The Group Read Selections And Make At Least One Post In The Discussion Thread.
The ABC Murders, Agatha Christie. (Post #47 in Discussion Thread.)

message 1668: by Heather (new)

Heather | 384 comments Finished task 25.5. My 2 favorite genres are kind of my own invented genres. They are "dramatic fiction" (meaning fiction with some kind of drama that drives the story-usually some kind of family drama) and "tell-all biography." (meaning somebody is airing some dirty laundry-kind of the book version of a tabloid!)

I like family drama because it is usually a really good story. It is driven by things that sometimes affect us in real life. They aren't just "fluff" (which is good sometimes!). They make you feel and they make you think. They also usually make me appreciate my family so much more!

I like tell all biographies because it feeds my voyeristic need to see how the other half lives. Everybody loves a little scandal now and then, and these non-fiction books are great mind candy!

I read:

In This Way I Was Saved: A Novel for dramatic fiction

Short review: AMAZING!!! You start out thinking you are reading a story narrated by a little boy's imaginary friend, but it twists and turns into a journey into mental illness and so much more. I can't say too much more without giving away major plot points, but this one would be well worth your time!

The Politician: An Insider's Account of John Edwards's Pursuit of the Presidency and the Scandal That Brought Him Down for tell all biography.

Short review: I'm not sure what to believe after this one. I had a lot of respect for Elizabeth Edwards last year. I read her book and felt for her. However, Andrew Young presents a different view of this famous family. His take on the scandal made me wonder just who they really are. I also wanted to slap him and tell him that it is mostly his own fault that his reputation was ruined. Say "NO" for once!!

5.4 The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls-This book won the Alex Award in 2005
15.3 Diva Las Vegas by Eileen Davidson-A soap opera mystery
This book was featured in the new books out this month (july)
on the cozy mystery website in the blog section on new books.
The url is www.cozy-mystery.com
This book was written by Eileen Davidson who appears as Ashley
on the Young and the Restless. This is the 3rd book in the series.
The main character is Alexis Peterson who is a soap star with a hunky LA Cop boyfriend and a sidekick named George who is the hairstylist on her show. Alexis is invited to a Halloween Party at the Hefner mansion where an old friend of hers winds up dead in the haunted house.
Alexis helps her boyfriend with the case which leads them to Las Vegas where Alexis is attending a soap convention.
This is a light read-read in a day and a half. Alot of insights into the world of soap stars which is an extra bonus for cozy mystery fans who love soaps.
25 Point Task
25.5 I love cozy mysteries. They are mysteries that tend to have females who run their own businesses in small towns and are amateur sleuths. I love this genre because they are usually quick reads and light that tend to cleanse my reading palate for the heavier reading i do. I love cozies as they tend to be series and when i read them it is like visiting close friends.
i read "Love Lies Bleeding" by Susan Witing Albert. This story has China Bayles as the amateur sleuth/herb shop owner who lives in a fictional Texas Hill Country town who becomes involved with solving the death of a former Texas Ranger with much scandal and intrigue.
B. The other genre i love is chick lit. I am drawn to stories of long time friends who either come together after a long time or are longtime friends over several decades. i have a group of friends from my college days in the 80's that still get together for girls weekends and chick lit reminds me of them.
I read "Bikini Season" by Shelia roberts about a group of girlfriends that turn their cooking club into a weight loss club so one of the members can fit into her wedding dress and the rest can get ready for bikini season. or their first bikini.
Both great women power books.

Just got back from Florida and have a few new completed tasks to report:

5.2 I read The Geography of Bliss: One Grump's Search for the Happiest Places in the World because it is a travel memoir of sorts in which the writer seeks out the happiest places on the planet and learns a few things about himself. Much like the premise of Eat, Pray, Love which is the movie I most want to see this summer!

5.3 I read Flashforward by Robert Sawyer (RS)

15.3 I read Horns, which was reviewed here: http://thenextbestbookblog.blogspot.com/

I really loved the book. I thought it was extremely unique. Ig Parrish wakes up one morning and discovers he has horns on his head. When people see the horns, they divulge all of their deepest darkest thoughts to him (and many ask his permission to act on them). As the book goes along we find out the back story on Ig and his girlfriend Merrin (whom he is presumed to have raped and killed). I ended up giving this a 4 star rating because I wanted a little more, by way of explanation.

15.10 "Other things may change us, but we start and end with family"

A. Family Album by Penelope Lively

B. What I love about my family is the way it, and it's members, keep on growing and changing. I loved having babies, and I loved watching my four children grow up - changing and developing but somehow still being the same people they always were. Now I look at my seven grandchildren and find them fascinating, each one different, but sometimes so much like one of my children it's like a flashback to thirty years ago.
And I think about my Mum, as she neared the end of her life, reminiscing about a family wedding where she had been delighted to be with her children, grandchildren, their partners, and her great grandchildren. I think she was amazed to realise that all these people came from her! My Mum said 'I just love them all!'

5.4 Lesser Known Awards: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, which was from the British Fantasy Award

5.1 Heat Wave: Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

25.6 Summer Lovin': The song Calaloo by Jimmy Buffett reminds me of summer because I had chicken pocks the summer it came out, and my dad played the cd constantly. Ms.soule (mrssoule) Update post for 15.3 - Books And Blogs
Undead and Unemployed by MaryJanice Davidson - ★ ★ ★ ★http://www.smartbitchestrashybooks.co...
Davidson's Undead series is basically a hilariously entertaining spoof of vampire books. In this book, the 2nd in the series, new & very reluctant vampire queen Betsy (she snarles when the other vampires call her Queen Elizabeth) attempts to keep her dream job at Macy's shoe department while hunting down a group of human vampire killers who are murdering her followers. Rather than the high drama you get with Buffy or the violence & gore of Anita Blake, with Betsy great hijinks ensue and only the REALLY bad guy dies (and a few minor vamps). In a nutshell, this series is chick-lit meets vampire.

15.3 John Connolly “The book of lost things” ---- blog “Books for breakfast” http://books4breakfast.blogspot.com/2...
I love this book. I love all david`s adventures and mysterious creatures. I was sometimes scared (im not into thrillers and horrors) but I couldnt stop read. I gave it 5 stars. Btw all creatures remind me on movie Pan`s Labirynth. Anyone has similar thoughts? Anyone has seen it?

15.9 Fiona Gibson “Mummy said the F-word”
At first I thought this book is all about me but I have nothing in common with main character  Okay one thing we both have kids (in four weeks second one) and we both struggle with them. And yes I try to find myself from before being mum .

I made mistake last time and add Shanghai girls for task 10.7 when it`s for task 10.6

20.10 I left post in our discussion

Heather | 384 comments Completed task 10.9 option B. by reading Musician's Yoga. It was a really good look at how to combine the techniques of yoga with the rigors of being a performance musician. I learned a LOT and look forward to sharing what I learned with my students when school starts in a few weeks!

I read Pretty in Plaid: A Life, a Witch, and a Wardrobe, or, the Wonder Years Before the Condescending, Egomanical, Self-Centered Smart-Ass Phase by Jenn Lancaster which I read about on the blog www.jennsylvainia.com
review of book - This book is funny and not quite as biting as Bitter is the New Black. It discusses the various outfits Jenn was wearing during a varity of momentous occassions in her life. It was funny, relatable, and really makes you feel like Jenn is imperfect just like the rest of us. I saw Jenn at a book signing in May and she really was delightful. I definitely recommend this book if you enjoy humorous, annecdotal books.

Nicole | 116 comments 10.1 Bridge of Sighs by Richard Russo, I didn't enjoy this book as much as Empire Falls, and it rambled a bit too much for me.
15.1 Old book - The Outsiders and New and blue (covered) Austenland, both were from the library and short, quick reads.
20.5 Mistress of the Art of Death which tool place in the 10th Century. I loved this book and would definitely recommend it!

REBECCA NJ - post 1574

30.5: The Chocolate War – Robert Cormier 06/21 (ingredient is chocolate – I make chocolate pretzels) AND Strawberry Shortcake Murder – Joanne Fluke 06/26 (novel with recipes)

Task 30.5 also requires "and let us know what makes your recipe stand out."

I guess my recipe stands out because I actually get requests from everyone and in fact have made them for parties I don't even go to. The entire recipe is pretzels, chocolate wafers and m&ms. In fact, last weekend all I did was make the chocolate pretzels. It's one of those items that can be a dessert or just a munchie. Hope this is enough.

And PJreads - I've just been Rebecca on the readerboard in the past.
