I try & live by the phrase "Fools Rush In" I ignored "Potter" for several years; until 'H.P & THBP' What can I say; it intrigued me. I started w/the 4th book & I have to say the J.K.R. is a decent writer. I do wish she would try something new. I just heard there will be a H.P. Series 8..... O My
I started with the fourth one too, when I was in the second grade, and i loved it so much I went back and read them all. I think JKR is a FANTASTIC writer. I would love to read another HP, but I liked the way it ended and I think people are starting to get frustrated with Harry Potter. She should write a different series.
I started with the second, becuz' I'd already seen the movies that had been made already, thinking the 1st one would be low-key. I was right, but I still liked the 1st. She should!!!!
It really has to do w/an individual's taste, really. Perhaps even the readers state of mind @ the time they pick up the book. I cheer myself up at times this way
The only books I have read more than the HP series is Moby Dick and The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings. I enjoy the HP books for their entertainment. I don't expect them to be uplifting or providing any grand experiential plane. And there is nothing wrong with reading for pure entertainment. One can't read Pulitzer and Nobel winners all of the time. When I was in college, I read Robert Ludlum novels as brain candy to allow my brain time to breathe before the start of the next semester. At this time of my life, I'm trying to finish reading all the Pulitzer fiction/novel winners. But I find I get too tired if I read one Pulitzer after another. So the entertainment of HP is useful before I dive into another Pulitzer.
And idiots do not read Pulitzer winners.

I'll tell you what I hate about H.P.!!! That J.K.R seems to be a 1 Trick Pony. She can write nothing else
Oh, your comment is so mature... As for calling people "idiots" that statement makes no sense at all. How can liking something make you an "idiot."

Brandon is a pretty cool guy. I met him before I knew he was an author. I only recently read the first Fablehaven and was enchanted. Another good series is Paul Genesse's Iron Dragon series. I met LE Modesitt and Dave Farland at the same local convention. Brandon Sanderson, too, back in the day when Mull and Sanderson were not yet really known.
:) I am sooooo lucky. Do you know this author, Shannon Hale? I have her autograph, a picture of me and her together, and I met her personally!

In my opinion, the Harry Potter series is amazing. I love J.K. Rowling's writing style and the plot. These books helped me growing up because I started to see that even though bad things happen, you can always make it through them with the help of friends and family. Before I read the books, I totally agreed that Harry Potter sucked, but afterwards I loved them. But, I understand why some people wouldn't like the stories, but don't critize them unless you have read them. Who knows, you might change your mind.

Shannon Hale wrote: The Goose Girl, Enna Burning, River Secrets, Forest Born, The Princess Academy, Rapunzels Revenge, and that's all I remember. Ring a bell?
Harry Potter books are great as are any book that gets a child or YA to read. They're not for everyone. I had no interest in reading them, but I also know that everyone likes different things. What a dull world it would be if we all read the exact same books. Also, it's tacky and childish to call anyone an "idiot". Shame on you.
Thank you Glenda! See guys? Not all people who don't have an interest in Harry Potter, are calling us idiots!!! And I think Kayla is the only one.

The books are an acquired taste, not going to deny that...Shoot I LOVE the books, I grew up on them, and even I would say the series isn't perfect, that I have my criticisms with it, but no one expects a series to be perfect.
harry potter was enjoyable until about book 3, then rowling got it in her head she was going to write "literature" and try to follow certain criteria (first of all, neither of which happened and second, the whole resurrection comparison was pushing it a little too far). also, you get any main character like harry potter (as i recall someone mentioned arthur, luke skywalker, and the like) don't they all grow and mature from the experience? i'm 100% certain harry learned nothing, and I really wished for his death (real death please, i hate when people argued that "oh, but he DID die!" he didn't. he's still here). i entirely wanted him to realize that he needed to sacrifice himself for the good of humanity and magic. the last novel needed more of something and less page wasting. i feel as though rowling may have been pressed for time on that last one and could have done much better. i do congratulate her on her grammar and style maturity. the first book is short and playful yet lacking in any structure and style, yet read the last 3 or 4, and she's definitely improved yet fell a little short with the plot. anyway, enjoying the movies a little more so than the books even though i spent my young adult years reading those
yeah, if you hate a book, thee's no reason to start a discussion on it! I've read the first book, I can't say I hated it, because I like magic and stuff like that. And, did you ever consider how the harry potter fan might feel? you are calling at least 700 people idiots!

I beg to differ. I detest this book with a passion. I am 100% with the creator. I can't really explain my hatrid for theese books, I just do. This book series, originally designed for younger children, gets more dark, gloomy, creepy, and not young child appropriate as the books continue. I read the first Harry potter book in 3rd grade. It sucked. As I got older, more came out, and I grew with them and my hatred dulled, I just sortof ignore the fanatics. My friend read them at the same time and still avidly follows the series. J.K. Rowling's original excuse for progressively making the books darker and less child appropriate was that the readers grew as she wrote the books, so they could understand the drama and it wouldn't emotionally scar them and cause them to have to go to therapy and have nightmares like when they were in third grade. Harry grows with the people reading the books. That may be true, but what about the kid that's now in third grade and is just starting the books. Being an early reader, and not all that into reading, maybe that kid doesn't take time in the day for doing so, etc. It would take that child, oh, let's say a year, at most, to read the entire series. By the time they hit fourth grade. Well, in that one year, I wouldn't say their brain has developed all that much. Definitely not enough to comprehend, and accept, and not have to go to therapy over the last few books. I think Rowling should've considered that before writing the way she did, and I think that Harry needed to grow, but maybe more appropriately? Her excuse was for parents to not let their kids read the books, and I'm sorry, but that's bullshit. You can't stop a kid from reading, and at that age, mostparents would be happy their kid is reading at all. So, with that, I'm going to call the books stupid, and Rowling conceited. I'm 14 and have more sense and compassion concerning children than a 40-something year old who I'm pretty sure is married with children. Funny how that works. As for the books themselves, ya, I simply hate them. Can't say why. I just do. I read the first one, maybe two, saw about 3.5 movies in random order, can't say I liked them, so I just quit. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the end of my rant. :)
