20.5, Melanie's Read Across America, with 2 books from the Authors' Favorites list
1. Madeleine L'Engle's favorite: Emily of New Moon by L.M. Montgomery 336 pages
2. Laure Halse Anderson's, William Joyce's, and Linda Sue Park's favorite: The Borrowers by Mary Norton 180 pages
I really enjoyed both books. I was a huge fan of the Borrowers as a child. I would build mini rooms in shoeboxes in the hope that they would move into my house. It was very sweet to revisit them.
I had never read the Emily series, though I adored all the Anne books. I think I would have enjoyed the Emily series even more at that time. Emily has bite.
25.1, Melissa's Deja Vu, with
A. Original: The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett and
B. Spade & Archer: The Prequel to Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon by Joe Gores
I think Joe Gores did a great job with Sam Spade. I think the backstories for Effie and Sid Wise were terrific. Gores really captured Hammett's use of language and his characterization of Spade was dead on. I was hoping that Miles Archer would have been featured more prominently, but he only shows up a few times- a little odd in a book titled Spade and Archer.

30.6 Donna Jo's Task: Character References
A. Neverland: J. M. Barrie, The Du Mauriers, and the Dark Side of Peter Pan 3*
B. Peter Pan 3*
Neverland: What a creepy book this was - even more so because it is non-fiction. The author, who had worked with Daphne Du Maurier, wondered why she refused to release her personal diaries, etc until 50 years after her death. His research resulted in this true story of her family and of J. M. Barrie, the author of Peter Pan.
Barrie was a sadistic man who was obsessed with controlling the members of the Du Maurier family for two generations. His special interest were the 5 boys who were cousins to Daphne. This was the basis for his novel and play "Peter Pan". The adults in the Du Maurier family were filled with their own psychological problems (and hashhish) which made them malleable and willing to be taken under his control.
The novel is filled with well-documented illustrations of: mind-control, hypnosis, mesmerism, pedophilia, psychosis, etc, etc, etc. The boys were sadly affected - one ran away to war and was killed, three ultimely committed suicide. Daphne was filled with neuroses and tried to commit suicide.
I could not enjoy Peter Pan in the same way again.

I honestly don't know which I liked better - they were so different from one another. First, Carrie was excellent - right from the get go, King had me hooked. Had I not seen the movie years ago and knew the story, this would have been one book I flipped thru to see how it ended. It was not a typical King novel - I find with his novels (the few that I have read), he tends to lull you with a false sense of security before all hell breaks loose. With Carrie, it was the total opposite - it was written in chronological order, but innerspersed with police reports and snippets from academic studies that were written after the fact. Very well done!
I found 'Salem's Lot to be what I would consider a typcial King novel - there's a sense of peace while the characters are introduced and slowly, the story builds up until all hell breaks loose. Genuinely creepy story, and great follow up to his first novel.
I gave both 5 stars and I'd have to say his first was fabulous and his second, just a much so.

30.5 - 6 degrees of separation - Diary of a Wimpy Kid made into a movie which stars Zach Gordon, who was also in the animated feature film Madagascar 2 with Ben Stiller. Ben Stiller starred in Tropic Thunder in 2008 which Robert Downey Jr. was also in. RObert DOwney Junior was in Iron Man which also starred Jeff Bridges who just won an Oscar for his performance in the movie Crazy Heart based on the book Crazy Heart: A Novel.

The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove by Christopher Moore on audiobook. There was quite a bit of lust in this book. An extremely large "sea beast" comes to town & causes a chemical reaction with many people who are then either drawn to the beast or lusting after other people. Basically, the whole town gets horny! I would have to say that Lust is my favorite of the deadly sins & in my opinion isn't really deadly until Envy is involved. There is also Greed in this book which I think is much worse than Lust. Christopher Moore always makes me laugh, fun book!

Stem Cell Research: Medical Applications And Ethical Controversy by Joseph & Ph.D. Panno
15.3
Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli
I think this book should be on the list because it tells an good moral story. It's about a girl who does what she thinks is the right thing no matter what other people think of her, and it feels like a timeless children's story. I don't think that I've read enough books to really say which should be at the top of the list, but of those that I have read, I think 1984 should be at the top.

I read Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang , and my review follows. I didn't bother to keep it short; it's the same review as that on my personal review of this book.
----------
I'm not much for most comedians. It's not that I don't get the comedy, but I think I just prefer that it be a bit cleaner. I have a comedy threshold, apparently, where if it gets too dirty, I just don't think it's funny anymore. Most of Chelsea Handler's brand of humor falls into the "too dirty" category for me.
This book begins with a chapter about "the feeling." She makes no bones about jumping right in and talking about orgasms and dry-humping everything in sight and masturbating and her "coslopus." Eek! It was a bit much for me. And, of course, all of this when she was but 8 years old (right).
I did find the last chapter fairly funny (probably that last chapter earned her the second star I gave her). In it, Handler details some open-ended pranks she has played on friends. That is, they are mostly jokes/pranks that had no resolution, so the person likely never knew and still doesn't know that they were duped. I had to wonder about those poor gullible souls who, probably, now know the truth...
I just have quite a bit of trouble imagining how anyone could want to be around Handler for any period of time. I have enough trouble with my husband, who uses humor as a defense mechanism. It sounds like Handler uses humor as an everything mechanism, and her sense of humor is so biting, so outrageous...it would drive me mad in minutes.

15.3 Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life It was on page 5 of the list, and I gave it 4 stars. It deserves to be on the list because its plea for consumers to buy local food is very timely, as we face environmental and other potential challenges when growing and transporting food.
The book that should be at the top of the list is East of Eden, or To Kill A Mockingbird, or A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Each one tackles issues that are still relevant today, but does so during a specific time in our history. This approach captures the context that give the stories each a certain distinguishing characteristic that makes it current in its own right.
25.9 Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. This book started fizzling out to me about halfway through until its end. I gave it 2 stars. It was popular and published in 1985, while I was still in school.

Ever since I saw "Splash" when I was little, I have dreamed of going to Cape Cod. The cover of The Man Who Loved Pride and Prejudice: A modern love story with a Jane Austen twist features an in-love couple enjoying some romantic leisure time with a lighthouse in the background and a beautiful ocean within walking distance. I would love to share the moment these two are experiencing with my husband. This is absolutely my dream vacation!

Though that still makes it better than 99.9 percent of things out there. For the top of the list, I'd say maybe Atlas Shrugged or A Fine Balance

I chose Michelangelo because I have been fortunate to see quite a few of his treasures. I saw the Pieta actually twice. Once in 1964 at the New York World's Fair and then again in Rome where I also was able to view the magnificence of the Sistine Chapel. I was also able to see his works in Florence. I've always marveled at the volume of work he was able to achieve. One interesting note is that he lived to be 89 in a time when the average life span was in the 40's.

15.3 At least once in a lifetime (p.4)- A Girl Named Zippy
I don't know if it should really be on the list of books you have to read at least once in your lifetime - but I enjoyed the book and could relate since I am the same age as the author and also grew up in a small Indiana town. I agree that To Kill a Mockingbird belongs on top of that list - it has such important messages about discrimination/prejudices and coming of age.
25.10 Melissa G's task - Deja Vu:
A.Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Other Stories
B.The Looking Glass Wars
C. The original is truly a classic and always the best. I enjoyed The Looking Glass Wars for its different twist and the story that Lewis Carroll got it wrong. My son first read this book (and the whole series) because he enjoys fantasy/science fiction. The best thing is it got him to read the original classic - which he also liked.
