I picked this up to help get myself back in mental shape for the interviewing process, after not having interviewed for several years. Oddly, I was often on the other side of the table, interviewing candidates, but my own interviewing skills were a bit rusty. This easy read helped me get back up to speed quickly on current interviewing trends, and boosted my confidence. I looked at a lot of options before selecting this book, and it does a good job of addressing the inevitable nervousness many of us feel in that situation. It also helped me to organize my thoughts and have the most important points about my abilities on the tip of my tongue during technical and behavioral interviews. Definitely do the positioning statement on page 94!

This was an impulse buy at Goodwill because I was starting a job search. I am so glad I bought it. The approach and exercises and advice are all top-notch. I have a newfound confidence going in to interviews due to the approach given.

The book has you inventory several aspects of your qualifications, and then create Q statements where you quantify those aspects so that when you answer a question you can elucidate a response that includes not only the important qualities, but the tangible benefits demonstrated by that quality. Rather than saying "yes, I'm an experienced project manager" you say "I've been a project manager for 5 years and have managed teams of up to 15 people and projects of up to $250K. The biggest project took 15 months and was brought in 3 weeks ahead of schedule and $15K under budget."

Practicing these statements before you interview can really make a difference in your confidence level.

Great book. Highly recommended.

Confidence in interviews

This author gives you the tools to interview well with sample interviews. The author talks about general skills with a list, job specific skills and gifts. There ate q exercises and suggestions on what to say and how to say them. I have to admit that this is a good resubmit there is nowhere to put the answers to questions in the book. There may be a different way to do it in the teal book. It really is better as a hard copy book. It needs a workbook.

I read this as I am designing a soft skills curriculum for my clients. The book is good in that it systematically prepares people who either have no clue how to interview or who get so nervous that they blank. The book also does a good job of getting people to think of their best qualities and breaking those down into easily understandable illustrations.

There are, however, glaring problems in the book. First, when an employer asks what your weakness is, they aren't looking for a gotcha like the author suggests. They are looking for self-awareness. If you don't want to look "weak," re-frame your answer to "You know, I choose one thing to work on each year. This year I am working on X." Second, I think her salary negotiation tactics are presumptuous. As an interviewer, even if I gave a range at the first interview for the position, I'd never call a candidate back who jumped up and said, "Great, I'll take (insert highest figure in range)! When can I start?" She is suggesting that you presume you got the job without the company ever offering it.

Read the first seven chapters (ignore the gotcha! questions part in chapter 7) and put the book aside.

It was a good book and I would definitely recommend. It gave you a good list of what could be asked so you would be well prepared and helped you to better analyze your skills. Some of the information seemed a little old fashioned though and I wasn't sure if it was an old book or if this was still true, like the part about women not wearing pants to an interview. A lot of the information was common sense too, like behaving in the waiting room and being on time. None the less though, I'm still glad I read it. I believe it will be a great asset to assist me in future interviews.

My first book on interview skills and preparation. I think it was very much helpful to me when I first read it. It gave me an idea what to expect, what the interviewers expect from me, and what traits and capabilities that can get me the job.

I first read this book just after I graduated from faculty of engineering, and was preparing myself to join the army. I was admitting to the college of reserve officers, and was to meet the board of generals who were holding the group interview.

The book is so comprehensive in getting your dream job methodology from knowing your self and soft skills and creating you cv ending by passing the interview and negotiating the proper compensation.

After all it is not oriented toward fresher graduates but it can help somehow.

I recommed it highly even if you did not graduate yet. cause i am sure it will help you to draw your career path and it will give a good grasp about the proffesional work field.

A little dated (at least the edition I read) but had some good tips and preparation homework that I think will be helpful... once I put some time into it. We will see how helpful it was soon...

I return to this book often to remember why I do what I do and how to express that in any kind of interview or conversation. Really great resource, everyone should have on their shelf.
