Monthly Challenge: July 2024

Welcome to our monthly Listopia Madness challenge. It is a relatively simple challenge. Every month you will get 3 listopia lists from me and 3 from the winners of the previous month. *Please note that if you do not respond in a reasonable amount of time that the 4th place person (and so on) will replace you until we get 3 lists.

How it works
📘You will read as many books as you want from as many of the lists provided as you want.
📘You will score each book using the point system provided below
📘You will keep a running tally of your total in your post (try to keep your books in one comment, if possible for easy tracking)
📘I will contact the 3 highest-scoring readers at the end of the month and they will each choose one listopia list to be included in the next month's challenge.

Challenge rules:
📘No poetry or cookbooks allowed.
📘Standard Rules Apply

Book Points

I am always saying that you need to broaden your horizons.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3759 comments Seriously, have you seen my read books? I'm not sure broadness of horizons is a problem for me. I even keep reading genres I don't really like for reasons that are unclear even to me 😆

The first list this round suffers from "I've read them all-itis" 82 read on page 1 alone! Most of what's left is kids books I have no interest in, and likely don't work for half the challenges I'm doing, lol! I think I may read too much...
The final list seems to be mostly self published stuff, and that's a road I don't go down unless I'm taking one for the team in a team challenge 😆

LaurLa | 364 comments Question for the lists - do we apply series rule for this challenge as long as the other book in the series you want to use still fits the list? For instance, Death at Wentwater Court, #1 in the Daisy Dalrymple series, is on the British list but I am on book 4. Could I use the book since it is still set in Britain.

Not for this challenge. We focus on the listopia itself. For my other challenges, I would usually say yes. Somewhere along the line, I lost my Q&A. Let me add that back in.

Thanks, I figured it would be that way since each list could be vastly different and cause issues if trying to use other books in a series. Thanks for letting me know.

I'm running into the same problem... not a that I've read ALL THE BOOKs 😉, but lots of series that just don't meet up where I am. Also, I already have too many books on my TBR to pick up a book just for this challenge - that only happens for team challenges!!

But I found a few and though I know I won't score many points, it's the fun of the search and MAYBE finding a gem on my TBR I'd forgotten about 😲

message 22: by Sammy (last edited Jul 03, 2024 07:52AM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3759 comments yeah, I have a couple of those on Jenny and Angie's lists. I'm part-way through way too many series!

This is a super fun challenge though. One of my favourites. When I'm not reading for team challenge mini tasks, this pretty much dictates my reading each month :D

Yep - like everyone else, I'm usually mid-series. But, I got incredibly luck with Angie's list (thank you, Angie!) which happens to work well with the rereading I'm doing for Book Games. I swear it come down to luck for me....

Team challenges come first for me, too. I still can't believe I only read four books from the lists last month, lol. None of the four Crete books I read were on any of the lists - imagine that.

Erica | 567 comments So two questions.
Is there a way to search lists (other than slowly paging through them) to see if books I already have planned for July are on them?
And, how do we go about reporting our month - do we just edit one message to add books as we finish?

message 26: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3759 comments Donna has done a how-to on finding a book on lists :

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

And yes, we just edit the one message. If you scan up you can see what other people have started, or look at last month's listopia challenge for lots more.

message 27: by Erica (last edited Jul 04, 2024 09:44AM) (new)

Erica | 567 comments Thanks Sammy! Trying this now but "search for word on page and then run for each page" - where exactly am I searching for the word?

I did find the lists for the book way at the bottom of the page. So that at least should work. Sorry to be so dense.

Hey Erica!
Glad to have you join this fun little challenge - it's quite addictive! 😃

I'll try to add to / help with the Listopia search question.

So, to do the word search, you have to do it on each page of the Listopia.

This is how I do it - I usually start at the last page and work forward since my books are usually not on the first few pages. (you can start on any page you choose)
~ With the list open to the starting page, click on the Ctrl key and the F key - this will have a search box popup at the top of the open page.
~ In the box, type in the most unique word in your title OR type in the full title.
~ This is give you a number in the box to the right of your word. Like 1/4 - that means the word appears on the page 4 times...further to the right are up and down arrows. Click on those to skip between the number of words. (If the number is 0/0, the word isn't on the page.

Hope that helps!!

Erica | 567 comments Got it!! Thanks so much. I usually don't do monthly things because my reading list gets pretty set from various other obligations. But I think I can handle this. Everyone here is so helpful. Now watch as I come in DLF, lol!

You are very welcome!

We all love to get points, but this challenge is fun and actually a bit challenging. Bragging rights are always great but getting any books to fit the lists that you already have planned is also pretty great!

Hope you enjoy this one.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3759 comments There are so many ways to search! And different things work for different people, depending on what they want to do.

Because I like to use the lists to plan my books when I can, I go through each list at the start of the month, and make a note of everything that's on my TBR (with the # it is in). If I get new books or do a re-read during the month, I'll look through that book's lists to see if any of ours are on it (though that can be a job and a half for the really popular books, lol)

Which reminds me, I only got through half of Angie's list the other day. Stoopid work got in the way, lol.

Erica | 567 comments This isn't going to work for me. My reading lists from other obligations are too long to fit more in. Looks fun though.

It can be really tricky. Some months go really well for me - others, not so much....

Don't forget to update...

message 35: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3759 comments I just finished Freedom, which is on every single summer reads list, except the one above.

Apparently it's not even on the "in your pants" list, which I think must be an oversight 😆

Jenny | 2149 comments Franzen is one of those hit or miss authors for me. Did you like that one?

message 37: by Sammy (last edited Jul 28, 2024 11:16AM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3759 comments It was ok. Well written, but not really anything I haven't read many times before.

Truitt_T | 1371 comments Thanks to everyone for the great lists this month! I've read at least two books for every list, which pretty much never happens for me.

I always have great intentions of reading a book for every list, but, yeah, not so much....

Snort. Yeah, I've had some months go that way, lol.

Donna, I'm all finished for July, and am looking forward to August!

I was waiting to see if a few others were going to update like maybe Angie or Sharon...

Thanks Jenny - I was due! Actually, I got really lucky - books I was willing to read worked for other challenges and it all just fit.

I'm not at all certain next month will go as well....

Jenny | 2149 comments Well, you will get to pick the best Listopia for your reading habits...

I do have one picked out, but I'm not sure everyone will love it. It does have a bunch of books I really would like to read, though. Donna's picks (well, two of them at any rate) helped me to pick something with a somewhat narrower focus than I might have otherwise.

One month I picked a list from which I managed to read one book - not my best showing, lol.

message 47: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2149 comments You win, you get to choose! I have one in mind that not everyone will love if I hold on to a top spot.
What I keep meaning to do is to see what the biggest lists are, and considering one of those for a month. But, as much fun as I have adding books to random lists, I haven't explored all that is out there.

message 48: by Truitt_T (new)

Truitt_T | 1371 comments Well, I loved everyone's lists for July - you were all very good to me!

I,m amazed at how many lists there are - and how few to which I've contibuted. I keep reminding myself to add books to lists, but with a few exceptions, I haven't done very well with it.

message 49: by Truitt_T (new)

Truitt_T | 1371 comments And I should add that I like it we repeat a list - I rarely get to all the books I want to.

Well, if I like the list, anyway. There have been a few I'd be happy to never see again!

Jenny | 2149 comments I just checked. The Haunted Vagina is on 27 listopias. So, if you want to read more books like that one, there are sooo many choices for you.
