Hello, HRBC,

Welcome HRBC members to the 7th annual Romance Across The Ages challenge!

Once again we have selected 2 random subgenres per month and we will be reading the same subgenres together. As usual, we've chosen for this year challenge: 24 subgenres and you can participate with at least 12 subgenres. The main goal is to read at least those 12 subgenres, but you can choose as many subgenres you like.

We will be tracking challenges here on the thread and on a challenge shelf.

Something seems to have happened when I posted the links in Goodreads. The links on the version I have in my word document all go to relevant lists.

I have amended the links for the Edwardian and Ancient Times themes as we are doing these in January. I will work through the list chronologically overthe nxt few days

Thanks for letting me know!!

Thanks Susan. I tried the Edwardian and they seem to be working now. I even found a book for January! (Scandal of the Year)

Jan (jan130) | 2658 comments Hmmm. Scandal of the Year tops the Edwardian era list, but elsewhere it's listed as 'a Victorian era delight'. Has anyone read it and knows which era it's set in?

I am no expert - but this interview with the author suggests that it is Edwardian: https://www.edwardianpromenade.com/in...

message 16: by Jan (new)

Jan (jan130) | 2658 comments Thanks for that link, Susan. I've now answered my own question anyway by starting to read the book, and it says on page 1 that the story opens in 1903. LOL. That reviewer I saw must have had a rather loose interpretation of 'Victorian era'.

BTW, I like the book so far. so if anyone else is looking for an Edwardian book for the January challenge, you might like to try it too. The kindle price isn't expensive either.

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 1214 comments 1901 to 1910 is Edwardian era . So it must be Edwardian.
Not many books to choose from for these time.

If I remember right, our new queen Camilla , great great grandmother Alice Kepler was Edwards Vll mistress .

Hate it when it changes what you have written, and you don’t realise till after it’s been posted 🙄😂

message 19: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 1368 comments shaz, the apple doesn't fall from the tree, does it? If I remember correctly, when Alice's husband found out about the affair, he divorced her. Edward might have had to testify which meant he would not be allowed to be king, so a friend claimed that he was the one having an affair. I forgot what happen to her after the divorce 🤔

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 1214 comments now you mention it, I remember reading something about that. She died in Italy.

You're right, there don't seem to be that many Edwardian HRs out there. I am enjoying the one I've started.

Yes King Edward apparently led a pretty scandalous life, although from all reports once he finally became king he did a decent job. But it is funny about Queen Camilla and King Charles considering their ancestors' relationship.

I believe Princess Diana was descended from the merry monarch King Charles II and one of his many mistresses.

Ha ha. I believe Princess Diana's ancestresses Barbara Villiers Palmer and Louise De Kerouaille, both famous mistresses of Charles II, were both beautiful and charismatic. Who said something about the apple not falling far from the tree?

Jan (jan130) | 2658 comments I finished my January book already. (I only plan to do one time period for each month). My book was Scandal of the Year by Laura Lee Guhrke, for Edwardian. I enjoyed its different and original plot, and plan to try more of this author's books.
@Tanya, I see you are also reading a book from the same trilogy for January. I'll be interested to see how you find it.
Scandal of the Year (Abandoned at the Altar, #2) by Laura Lee Guhrke

Merry (jewelhound) | 854 comments I just finished Think of England (England World, #2) by K.J. Charles and it could fill eith of the slots..... Edwaridian or LGBT. I enjoyed it as its rather a reverse of the beautiful spy and the handsome wounded warrior set in the Edwardian period at a house party. Gave it a 4*

I finished my January book (I am also only choosing one per month). Edwardian - set in 1905. The Other Guy's Bride by Connie Brockway. Very enjoyable - I really like her books.

I haven't read any Connie Brockway. This one is on Kindle Unlimited, and I have a 2-month cheapo subscription at the moment, so I think I will try this book. Looks intriguing.

I do like her books. She is quite similar to Loretta Chase

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 1214 comments I am reading The Warrior’s Bride Price by Jenni Fletcher. Roman Period.

Cath | 370 comments I really enjoyed Connie Brockway's My Dearest Enemy and As You Desire. They're some of my favorites. And I agree, she reminds me a bit of Loretta Chase.

I always mean to read more of her books. Will have to try The Other Guy's Bride one of these days.

Jan (jan130) | 2658 comments I finished The Other Guy's Bride, my second Edwardian read for January lol. 4 stars. I really liked it. Kind of an Indiana Jones Egyptian adventure story, but with more romance. I now plan to read other books by this writer. Yes, there was a bit of a Loretta Chase feel.

@Cath, the heroine of The Other Guy's Bride is apparently the daughter of Harry and Dizzy from As You Desire. They make a few appearances in this book too.

I'd not realized that. That's even more reason for me to bump it up on my TBR list. Plus, perfect excuse for me to re-read, as a refresher, As You Desire, one of my favs :)

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 584 comments I read The Bachelor List by Jane Feather. I've no idea where this title came from as there is no bachelor list in the book.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed this opposites attract romance very much. Constance is a breath of fresh air and reflects the changes that women in the Edwardian era were ongoing very well.
Max is a very pompous hero but like Constance, I liked him despite myself.
They have great chemistry and banter.

Jan (jan130) | 2658 comments I've already read two Edwardian books this month (liked them both) but I might try this one too. It looks interesting. I don't think I've read anything by Jane Feather.
