It was suggested by one of our members that we combine the "What books are you reading?" and "What books have you read?" threads into one. We thought it was a great idea, and will help facilitate the flow of discussion on the books our members are reading.

Navi (nvsahota) | 106 comments Great idea!

Currently reading:
Daphne by Josh Malerman Obsolescence A Dark Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Horror Anthology by Alan Lastufka

Recently read:
Music of the Gods by Richard Schiver ★★★★ - a quick 13 page story!
The Mountain in the Sea by Ray Nayler ★★★★★ - I would have loved to see more of the octopus but this was a fantastic, philosophical read. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
The Lonesome Crown (The Five Warrior Angels, #3) by Brian Lee Durfee ★★★ - the last book in the Five Warrior Angels trilogy. It dragged on at parts but I did enjoy how everything got resolved

I don't know if it is technically horror, but I definitely thought it was pretty scary. Would love to hear anyone else's thoughts on this book!

Excellent sequel to Rabbits.

Jennifer | 450 comments House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski

Not sure if any of you are gamers, but House Of Leaves is getting talkes about a lot online because of a Doom mod called 'My House'.

It's been years since I read it so I decided to read it again as my partner is away and I've got a quiet house for a week. I've just finished it. It's quite a slog but I think it's worth it overall. Quite thought provoking. A haunted house in a different way.

Christopher Conlon (goodreadscomchristopherconlon) | 530 comments Finished Brian Lumley’s Short Tall Tales—some amusing stories, but as with most collections of short-shorts, they all start to blur together after a while. No real standouts here.

Now starting Scream at Midnight by Joseph Payne Brennan.

message 25: by Rosalyn (new)

Rosalyn | 47 comments I ended All's Well with more questions than answers, but exceptionally, that is what I enjoyed about this book, with an open ended conclusion, one's interpretation can run wild.

On the surface, the book addresses gender bias in medical diagnoses and the psychological effect of chronic pain, but more than that, All's Well is a book about fate vs. destiny, one in which the end result leans more towards being a product of the former, as the main character's desperate attempts to change her path leads her back to the beginning.

Do you mean the Lovecraft, Kimberly? I’ve read some of the stories before; they’re not among his best but some are excellent (especially “The Diary of Alonzo Typer”). I’m looking forward to the ones that are new to me.

Kentucky (kentuckykfc) Just finished Earthlings by Sayaka Murata! Finished it in no time, I thought it was great. A lot of people seem to dislike its strange concept but I thought it was really creative. Not to mention it was really disturbing. Hope I can find more books like it!

inciminci | 649 comments I'm reading Wolf Country as well as Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. First one is kind of a slog, but Androids is actually a fun read and different enough from the movie to make it exciting.

message 45: by Christopher (new)

Christopher Conlon (goodreadscomchristopherconlon) | 530 comments Well, I wanted to love Our Lady of Darkness, but in the end I only liked it—and that mostly for the superb work Fritz Leiber did with the setting of the story. I can’t consider it a great horror novel, but it’s definitely a great San Francisco novel—the reader can see and feel all the streets and neighborhoods and landmarks he describes really vividly.

Next up is the horror-adjacent The Night Ocean, a novel about H.P. Lovecraft.

I recommend it. It's a great quick read if that's what you want but it's worth taking your time too as the characters are well fleshed out so it's a fun journey to the pay off

That tracks. I haven't reread it yet, but I still recall the setting and the writing pretty vividly, while the ghost story itself has largely faded.
