What books are you reading/have you recently read? 2023
Rosalyn wrote: "A reimagining of a classic that not only expands on events that were originally off-page, but offers a new point of view and improves upon the source of inspiration, an impressive feat.I also thought it was a great retelling. It's kind of clear what's going on early if you've read certain horror novels, but I don't think that detracted from the story at all. There were some great gothic moments, and the length was just right.
Finished Cackle. I enjoyed it.
Started two other books: Black River Orchard and A Man Among Ghosts
So much good stuff to read for this time of year.

Just finishedThe Carrow Haunt
I loved it! The characters weren't flat (in my opinion) and this book was actually spooky. Definitely recommend it if you like ghost hunting/haunted-house vibes. I have enjoyed a few of her books so I will definitely be reading more from her soon!

Love that book! That book creeped me out when I read it a few years ago. One of my all time favorites by Darcy Coates. :)
I finished: How to Sell a Haunted HouseReading now:
Cutter's Deep: Welcome to Hell
The Demonic
and
Hidden Pictures
I'm also re reading the illustrated editions of Harry POtter. I'm already on the third book though. I love to listen to them but they go by so quickly.

How was the Hendrix book?
I just finished reading Near the Bone by Christina Henry. I'm still deciding on my next book deciding The Least of My Scars by Stephen Graham Jones or Such Sharp Teeth by Rachel Harrison. I have no idea how I'll choose which one.

I finished Near the Bone earlier this year, as well. I liked it and thought it was incredibly fast paced and, of course, I’m a sucker for a creature feature. In other news, I’m reading The Fisherman, finally.

Despite this, I do wish the author filled in some mysteries she left us. In my opinion, she might have left too many questions in the end. I wish at least some of them got answered. But overall it was an enjoyable read

Ohh I love that book as well. I hope you enjoy it. I love Lovecraftian horror :))
Oh gosh, yes. I looooove cosmic horror. It’s probably my favorite genre. Have you read American Elsewhere by Robert Jackson Bennett?
Omg i wanna read that but im a little intimidated by books with lots of pages rn (trying to get out of a slump)

American Elsewhere suprised the hell out of me by how good it was. For a thick book, it reads really fast.

Currently reading in
(The Horror Stories of Robert E. Howard) until I settle on something else to read. I have lots of options -- maybe too many.
American Elsewhere is a thick book, but it reads sooooo fast. If you like cosmic horror, I definitely recommend it. It’s incredible. And Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins is the same way. Kinda thick, but the cosmic horror is incredibly well done.
My last few horror selections were books by Jon Athan, Triana, and Daniel J. Volke. The latter was steeped with historical fiction from the Nazi's occupation of Poland which started the War. It is beautifully written and incorporates the Nazi fascination with occultism. It also features of the the Greater Demons from he'll whose powers has been harnessed temporarily by the German and later the righteous. It is a terrific story.Rated it 5 Stars.
Widow's Point
I’m mystified by the good reviews I’ve seen for this cliche-ridden found-footage story. There isn’t a single original idea in it—not one.

If you play video games, I think you'll link Dredge, its super similar in my opinion

I've read Lovecraft Country and thought it was great. I love how each smaller story in it is unique and yet they all linked together to make one complete story. It was very clever and I loved the characters.

I haven’t read Lovecraft Country yet. But I keep forgetting to add it to my TBR. I need to do that now! Thanks for the reminder. 😆 I play some games. Not very often. But I’ll check out Dredge. I’m always looking for a game to catch my attention. :)

Ohh if you want a good idea of what Dredge is about in terms of atmosphere and a bit of game mechanics, watch the Dredge's Official Release Date Reveal Trailor. The Official Feature Length Animated Trailer of the game gives too much stuff away in my opinion, and Official Release Date Reveal Trailor got me hooked in less than 2 minutes (though I did watch it before the other trailor).

And its DLC is coming out soon, that DLC will take place in the artic. So that's something to look forward too

Ohhh they're smaller stories slowly becoming one? I have to check it out soon. I feel like this month will be a Lovecraft month
I’m reading Slewfoot by Brom. Really good so far. I’d never read this author before, but I like his writing and the artwork adds to the creepy feel throughout the book.
I started and am almost done with, The dead zone by King. This is really engaging I'm really enjoying it.
Finished Black River Orchard yesterday. Interesting story but like many of Wendig's books, it could have been a few pages shorter.
I finished the disappointing Edgar Award winning mystery novel
The Bottoms by Joe R. Lansdale
Rating: 2 stars
Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
and I started reading
A Simple Plan by Scott Smith
These are more "suspense" than horror, I should mention.
I recently finished Black River Orchard by Chuck Wendig. It was ok, but it wasn't as good as I was hoping it would be.Now I'm reading Edenville by Sam Rebelein and I seem to be loving it a lot more than many of the reviewers on GR.

I just read this book too and I guess I'd been hoping for something a little better too. To me it had a slight YA feel to it, except maybe for the parts (view spoiler)

Yeah! I got a strong YA vibe from it too (with the same exception that you mentioned). His books are always hit or miss with me. So I'm hoping the next one will be a hit!
The Love of my LifeJust finished: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
Fantastic book, would highly recommend.
Just finished Snow
I absolutely loved it! The imagery was so well done. A bit disappointed with the ending, but overall good read.
