The game had only started when there was a 10 minute delay when Jeremy Cameron had to be stretchered from the field - injured in a friendly fire collision with Gary Rohan. Both teams were holding their own but by the start of the final quarter you thought Melbourne were going to run away with it. Geelong thought otherwise and put in a blistering spell. Melbourne hit back with two late goals but they had left it too late. Geelong are a different team when both Mark Blicavs and Rhys Stanley play.
Philip had the margin spot on so wins another $7.00 for Canteen. You're definitely in form at the moment Philip!

No, that's not an error in the Swans/Eagles game. I think even Tim might have got tired watching all the play at one end of the ground.
We had this win coming and it was unfortunate for the Eagles. Got 3 big players back and it showed. We put up a good fight at Lions last week and I knew we could do this. Maybe a kick start to scrape into top 8 but a huge game for us next Friday at the SCG against the Cats
I felt sorry for the Eagles. They were not in game after 10 minutes. Heads dropped and it will be a tough week in training for them.

Wow indeed Anita. Just goes to show what happens when you get our young but good looking forward line back plus Mills to stabilise defence and Parker to run midfield. Mind you the opposition were woeful but playing like this we would have beaten much stronger teams. I missed the game live apart from the first 90 seconds as was out at concert but in that 90 seconds we had already kicked 2 goals. Enjoyed watching it late on Saturday though as didn't know the score.
Tonight's result:Brisbane Lions (David) v Richmond Tigers (Philip)

One-way traffic tonight but two people picked the Lions by 32 points (the closest to the actual margin of 81) so congrats to Steve and Dean. $7.00 goes to both Backpack Bed For Homeless and the Sacred Heart Mission.

Wellal draw. What can I say. Swans missed so many chances. Tom Hickey... how can you miss 2 straight in front from about 10m??That said...a great performance apart from kicking at goal. Geelong...you knew you had a game and were outplayed. Trouble is we nneded that win.
Tonight's result:Sydney Swans (Anita) v Geelong Cats (available)

I can't say either side was truly deserving of a win here because they both made so many fundamental errors. They both had the chance to put the game out of reach but couldn't score under pressure. Players seemed to drift in and out of the game. At least it counts as a win for all tipsters.
My heart goes out to Val with Port kicking a goal from 54m after the siren to win. It just made the line. This was after the Bombers had fought back from a 17 point defecit with only 7 minutes to go to take the lead with 90 seconds left. This game is very tough and really pulls at you at times.

I was out tonight (went to see Cate Blanchett [in the flesh] together with director Warwick Thornton doing a Q & A following the screening of their new film "The New Boy") but emerged from the cinema to see the Dons leading by 9 points. By the time I got home Port were leading but then miraculously my boys reversed it. Siren! Hooray! Houston will never goal from there! Should have known better, especially after Jamie Elliott's goal for the Pies after the siren last year. Oh well!
We are going to see the film this week. Nearly booked to go today as a few sneak showings but the lure of a live screening of a National Theatre play from London with David Tennant in a play called Good won out as this will have limited showings and Victoria adores David Tennant.
Me too, going back to Takin' Over The Asylum (I still love that show). And wasn't he eerily awful as Des? And Deadwater Fell? If you've seen some of Warwick Thornton's films (I loved The Beach on SBS) you'll know how his work is always visually beautiful. Good support from Deborah Mailman and Wayne Blair.

A couple of exciting games there. Conditions were poor in Alice Springs for the Demons/Giants game but no excuses for the Dees' loss. The Eagles almost looked like they might pull it off - got to feel sorry for them.

Whatever happens this weekend in AFL it cannot match contraversy over Ashes. This has pushed AFL off a lot of pages in The Age here in Melbourne which is unheard of. Even covered on pages 3 and 4 today as well as about 4 of the sports pages. Needless to say not very pro England stance.
I've been very disheartened by all the ill-feeling going around on both sides. Not that it's anything new. Behaviour among spectators has been deteriorating in all sports for quite a while now and I don't like the direction it's heading. On-field, professional players are paid exorbitant amounts of dosh so the main concern is winning. How we play the game went out with Bodyline. Rod Marsh recalling Derek Randall and Adam Gilchrist walking are such rare examples of "sportsmanship" that we remember them vividly. Winning, and not how we win, is the name of the game for all cricketers. I really like Stuart Broad and how he plays the game, I just wish he would temper his comments in the cool light of day. At least this Australian team (possibly Warner excepted) is not quite as yobbo as in years gone by. Headingley is going to be interesting!New recording from Paul Kelly written after watching Khawaja’s double century against England at the SCG in January 2022.

I agree Val, fan behaviour is in serious decline. There is a fine line though between providing passionate support and just plain abuse. It is one I try to maintain. I have always felt supporters create the atmosphere and games are dead without it. As long as you keep respect and mindful of others around you then it is fine. Whilst Australia were perfectly within their rights to dismiss Bairstow in that manner I feel the appeal should have been withdrawn. It would be interesting to see if an Australian, perhaps deliberately wandered out of his crease in the same manner, if England would uphold their principles they claim to have and not run him out.
Most of the abuse I articulate at the footy is directed at my own team - "Showpony" being my favourite. I'm leaning towards support for Carey's action. I rather think this was always planned because the Aussies had identified Bairstow's tendency to wander out of his crease. Carey was standing well back, didn't miss a beat, just picked up the ball and threw at the stumps not even looking where Bairstow was. And I also believe any keeper in any team would have done the same. It's not nice, nor is the rejoicing, but there's a lot about professional sport that isn't nice these days.
Another question is why is Bairstow there anyway (yes, I know it's because he can bat a bit) but everyone seems to think Foakes is a better keeper and his run average (32.2) isn't much behind Bairstow's (36.88). I see England has made three changes for tonight. It will be interesting to see how Todd Murphy goes at Leeds - I'll always barrack for a Victorian! - and whether any other changes eventuate.
EDIT: I'm not a fan of Mitch Marsh but I see his name cropping up.
