Val H. | 22140 comments Tonight's result:

Sydney Swans (Anita) v St Kilda Saints (Tim)
0.0.0 (Q1) 1.1.7
5.5.35 (Q2) 4.2.26
7.10.52 (Q3) 7.4.46
9.12.66 (Q4) 12.8.80

I was out tonight so can't comment on the game. Tim will not be happy. Suzy, yet again, comes out tops with her prediction of the Saints by 7 so she wins $7.00 for Friends With Dignity. The rest of us will have to hope for better results from the remainder of the round.

message 310: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Swans not good enough and big hole in middle as predicted without Luke Parker. Didnt help that Blakey was limping from about 5th minutes then got subbed out due to a concusion following a dangerous tackle. No excuses, did usual thing of a terrible last quarter but 2 50m penalties both leading to goals in front for the Saints in that quarter ultimately was the difference. Both looked dodgy to say the least but then I would say that wouldn't I? First time ever failed to score in first quarter at SCG but Saints only managed 7 so very low score at quarter time.

message 311: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22140 comments As I said, I was out but had I been home I think I would have switched over to the cricket after that first quarter. I don't know that having four field umpires has made for any improvement in umpiring decisions. Sometimes it's not even the nearest ump who blows the whistle. However, maybe it's not so much the umps as the ever changing rules and interpretations. Sometimes a 50 is given and you (as a viewer) have no idea what for. I read what Jason Dunstall had to say and he seemed to applaud Butler's effort in running down and tackling a much bigger player but I suppose once the arms are pinned, you're up for a suspension.

message 312: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments I do not think that tackle worthy of a suspension either. I thought a fair tackle but it just took Blakey unaware which is the whole point.
Had an interesting case this week with one of my tradies on the site I am currently managing. He plays for Warburton in division 2 of the eastern Outer Districts League or whatever it is. Dale has played 18 seasons without ever being on report or suspended. He arrived on site at 5 30 Monday morning and was not his usual cheery self. Turns out he was yellow carded and then reported and suspended for 1 week in last Saturday's match. He was so upset as was very proud of his career and reputation.
There was a brawl of about 10 players in the last 15 minutes which was a bit pointless as his team were over 100 ahead (they top the table this season). He showed me footage and as he claimed the melee evolved around him but all he did was to try and restrain others from joining by stretching out his arm. Once order and calm had been restored the umpire walked over to him and showed a yellow card. Dale just walked off without comment but I could see how upset he was. Turns out his club were too late to make an appeal so he would have to do himself. This would have cost $1000 which he would not get back if he lost. He reckoned his action could be taken as being part of the melee which would have been ridiculous but that is what his club thought. He then broke the rules by contacting the umpire directly who whilst speaking to him refused to view the footage as he claimed he had been traumatised by the incident and was trying to put this behind him. However, evidently by Tuesday, he must have changed his mind as the report had been withdrawn and the ban rescinded with no action to be taken. Dale was very relieved but annoyed he received the yellow card. As he says he knows all the umpires well and only moments before this incident had been having a joke with him. They only have 2 field umpires at this level and in this game the umpire in question was blowing for every minor incident which didn't help the players whilst the second umpire blew for nothing and let play continue. As Dale says, this is ridiculous with the players not knowing where they stood. He doesn't blame anyone and appreciates more than most what a difficult job the umpires have.
I didn't realise that outside of AFL cards are used all the time so this is an interesting snapshot into country footy. The team Warburton and Millgrove were playing was Powelltown so nearly a local derby and a grudge match.

message 313: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Apart from being a diehard Collingwood fan Dale is a really nice chap who is proud to coach his clubs under 9's and gives up a night a week to train them on top of his 2 nights a week to train himself with the senior side. Then on Friday evenings is the under 9's matches so what a lot of time to give up but he says he loves it and hopes to play another 3 seasons at senior level if he can.

message 314: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Cricket going very well for the Aussies. I think their bowling will be far too strong for England and the middle order batting has improved beyond recognition and now does not just rely on Smith and Labuschange. I just fail to understand how India did not take Ashwin into the test.

message 315: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22140 comments I can understand that your colleague Dale was upset by the carding and report. Sounds like it turned out okay in the end but it still would have left a nasty taste in his mouth, especially knowing the umpire personally. I wasn't aware that yellow cards were given in other leagues.

You would think that Ashwin was a dead-cert for any test side but just goes to show what depth India has. I was surprised they decided to bat but then I expect them to know more than me. The Ashes series will be interesting. It's a shame Jofra Archer's run of injuries continues.

message 333: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments No Buddy tonight so perhaps the ball going forward may find our other players. Got tall debutant by name of Jack Buller up front. Only made debut for reserves in VFL last week but kicked 5 goals. That was the first Swans reserves win of the season. This competition does give a reasonable snapshot of the depth of the teams in the AFL. In that case good news for Queensland with Gold Coast top and Brisbane Lions second. Swans currently rock bottom. My local side Sandringham are in the VFL and that is who the Swans beat last week. They are at home to the Brisbane Lions next Saturday and am considering going. Their home ground overlooks the Bay and is in a glorious setting.

We did have a wonderful 60th party for our friend Mary at a vineyard on Sunday in glorious 24 degree sun in a cloudless sky. We booked to stay in a lodge on site so plenty of wine tasting. And we met such a wide variety of people and it is making us think of realising our dream and moving to the Sunshine Coast hinterland when I can take a backward step. It is just so beautiful.
