Had an interesting case this week with one of my tradies on the site I am currently managing. He plays for Warburton in division 2 of the eastern Outer Districts League or whatever it is. Dale has played 18 seasons without ever being on report or suspended. He arrived on site at 5 30 Monday morning and was not his usual cheery self. Turns out he was yellow carded and then reported and suspended for 1 week in last Saturday's match. He was so upset as was very proud of his career and reputation.
There was a brawl of about 10 players in the last 15 minutes which was a bit pointless as his team were over 100 ahead (they top the table this season). He showed me footage and as he claimed the melee evolved around him but all he did was to try and restrain others from joining by stretching out his arm. Once order and calm had been restored the umpire walked over to him and showed a yellow card. Dale just walked off without comment but I could see how upset he was. Turns out his club were too late to make an appeal so he would have to do himself. This would have cost $1000 which he would not get back if he lost. He reckoned his action could be taken as being part of the melee which would have been ridiculous but that is what his club thought. He then broke the rules by contacting the umpire directly who whilst speaking to him refused to view the footage as he claimed he had been traumatised by the incident and was trying to put this behind him. However, evidently by Tuesday, he must have changed his mind as the report had been withdrawn and the ban rescinded with no action to be taken. Dale was very relieved but annoyed he received the yellow card. As he says he knows all the umpires well and only moments before this incident had been having a joke with him. They only have 2 field umpires at this level and in this game the umpire in question was blowing for every minor incident which didn't help the players whilst the second umpire blew for nothing and let play continue. As Dale says, this is ridiculous with the players not knowing where they stood. He doesn't blame anyone and appreciates more than most what a difficult job the umpires have.
I didn't realise that outside of AFL cards are used all the time so this is an interesting snapshot into country footy. The team Warburton and Millgrove were playing was Powelltown so nearly a local derby and a grudge match.

You would think that Ashwin was a dead-cert for any test side but just goes to show what depth India has. I was surprised they decided to bat but then I expect them to know more than me. The Ashes series will be interesting. It's a shame Jofra Archer's run of injuries continues.

We did have a wonderful 60th party for our friend Mary at a vineyard on Sunday in glorious 24 degree sun in a cloudless sky. We booked to stay in a lodge on site so plenty of wine tasting. And we met such a wide variety of people and it is making us think of realising our dream and moving to the Sunshine Coast hinterland when I can take a backward step. It is just so beautiful.
