Val H. | 22140 comments Brilliant goal to Joe Daniher. (He never shone at Essendon).

message 652: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22140 comments Goal to Jack Crisp, again after the siren. All credit to Nick Daicos for brilliant ball work in getting it to him.

Half-time score:

Collingwood Magpies (on hiatus) v Brisbane Lions (David)
4.4.28 (Q1) 3.0.18
9.9.63 (Q2) 9.3.57

Val H. | 22140 comments Goal to McCluggage - Pies by 2.

message 654: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22140 comments Goal to the Lions' Robertson. Then a couple of behinds to the Pies. Lions lead by a point.

Val H. | 22140 comments Goal to the Pies from Scott Pendlebury (383 games in the black and white) - hard to begrudge the man. Pies by 5 points.

message 656: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22140 comments Behind to McCarthy and at three-quarter time it's the Pies by 4. Commentators tell us there are just over 100,000 people in the ground and that only Geelong has come from behind at three-quarter time to win a Grand Final. Still 28 degrees but the ground is mostly in shade now.

Collingwood Magpies (on hiatus) v Brisbane Lions (David)
4.4.28 (Q1) 3.0.18
9.9.63 (Q2) 9.3.57

Val H. | 22140 comments Goal Collingwood - Pies by 10. Is that it??

message 661: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22140 comments Goal Daniher for the Lions. Pies by 4 points with a minute and a half on the clock.

Val H. | 22140 comments Final score:

Collingwood Magpies (on hiatus) v Brisbane Lions (David)
4.4.28 (Q1) 3.0.18
9.9.63 (Q2) 9.3.57
10.15.75 (Q3) 11.5.71
12.18.96 (Q4) 13.8.86

What a great Grand Final. So often they are one-sided or underwhelming but this was one for the ages. I'm not sure how many times the lead changed - 10?? All the goals were amazing - nothing lucky about them. And the umpiring was okay, I thought, didn't influence the final result, although the Lions were unlucky to have a late advantage call when they would have been better off going back and taking the free kick. But that's it - those damned Magpies - they and their fans will be even more insufferable.

message 663: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22140 comments Steve and Sussex were the only two who tipped the Pies but it's Steve who takes out the final prize with his tip of the Pies by 9 points. He wins $15.00 for Backpack Bed For Homeless. Well done!

Give me a week to work out the redistribution of monies earned and I shall be back to tell you what you've earned for your charity.

Val H. | 22140 comments One of the best Grand Finals in my life in Australia!

message 667: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments A truly memorable final.

It is with great sadness that our dear friend Garry Walsh, who emigrated to Brisbane in 2005 and a passionate sports fanatic and regular attendee to all codes in Brisbane at both Suncorp and The Gabba, died just 15 minutes after the grand final ended. He had an incurable cancer and had been in a hospice for the past week. He died peacefully with so many friends nearby. It is with great credit to him that he made it to all but the last Broncos final at Suncorp in a wheelchair but did not live to see their dramatic loss to the Penrith Panthers yesterday.

He was a work colleague and dear friend of over 40 years with my wife and is one of the main reasons we followed to Australia in 2010.

RIP Garry you were loved by so many and at just 61, died far too early.

We will always remember the Reds winning the super rugby tournament in my first season here in 2011 when Victoria and I attended every match at Suncorp flying up from Sydney where we lived at that time. This we continued to do for the next 5 seasons staying with Garry and his partner for all those weekends. Many memorable moments with 20 or so loyal and wonderful rugby fans sitting in our corner at Suncorp.

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Sussex can explain and be horrified that in my case, as a passionate Spurs fan of 60 years, came to Australia and the first team I supported not only wear Red but were called The Reds. I then compounded this dramatic change in my life by supporting The Swans who also play in Red. Sorry Sussex.

message 669: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22140 comments 61 is just far too young and cancer robs you of everything at the end. I'm glad he got to hear that last Grand Final even if the result didn't go the way he wished. Mr H watched the game - as I passed through the Broncos were leading by 10 points. I hope that gave Garry some joy. That is a very sad loss for you and Victoria and will leave a gaping hole. I wish you all the best.

message 670: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Thank you Val. Garry sadly did not make the NRL final which is probably just as well as with 20 minutes left they were 24 8 up but managed to lose thanks to a brilliant performance from Nathan Cleary.

To be honest Tim, I'm not sure why I haven't completely disowned you mate.

Wales may also play in red but, in my defence, I have no choice in that matter.

Please accept my condolences for the loss of your good friend.

Val H. | 22140 comments I'm hoping to get down to sending off your hard-earned dollars this Sunday (been busy out and about - plays Death Of A Salesman and My Sister Jill, Winnie The Pooh - The Musical and comedy/music act The Billy Joels) but before Tim jets off to sunny France and hopefully some exciting rugby games, he might like to know that the donation to the Koala Hospital is likely to be AU$50. Have a great time!!

We won't be watching much rugby here but the I.C.C. World Cup one dayers will be getting plenty of viewing.

message 673: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22140 comments Okay, I think I've finalised the donations and they look like this:

Steve (Backpack Bed For Homeless) - AU$130.00 (£68.00 )
Philip (Canteen) - AU$110.00 (£57.00)
David (The Song Room) - AU$105.00 (£55.00)
Val (Asylum Seeker Resource Centre) - AU$90.00 (£47.00)
Suzy (Friends With Dignity) - AU$85.00 (£44.00)
Sussex (Save The Bilby Fund) - AU$80.00 (£42.00)
Dean (Sacred Heart Mission) - AU$50.00 (£26.00)
Tim - (Koala Hospital - Port Macquarie) - AU$50.00 (£26.00 )
Duke (Centre For Eye Research Australia) - AU$50.00 (£26.00)
Anita (The Mirabel Foundation) - AU$50.00 (£26.00)
Blastro (Zaidee's Rainbow Foundation) - AU$40.00 (£21.00)

and in her memory:
Lez (Dementia Australia) - AU$50.00 (£26.00)

I have already made the donations - well all except two. There's always one fly in the ointment (in this case two) - the online donation button for Duke's and Blastro's charities keeps coming up with an error in computer language that means nothing to me so I think I'm going to have to ring them both tomorrow and see if I can sort it.

The sterling equivalents I've given are rounded up or down to the nearest £.

I'm happy to do it all again next year but that's up to you. In the meantime, happy punting whatever your chosen vice is and I'm off to watch cricket and tennis.

Val H. | 22140 comments I wound up emailing the two charities (Blastro & Duke's) that wouldn't let me donate online. The first replied immediately (and on a weekend) saying he knew there was problems but gave me the bank details to deposit in. The second replied on the Monday and gave me an alternative website which told me that donations made over a 36 hours period starting from 00.01 Thursday would be tripled, so I hung on till today and Duke's $50.00 is now $150.00!

https://www.charidy.com/HopeinSight

They're aiming for $150,000 and have already raised $92,000.

Nice one Val! As per all on here, i'd like to convey my gratitude and appreciations for running the AFL tipping comp once more, for your incredible generosity re charity donations, and too congratulate you on winning this season tipping comp. Good on yah! :)

Can't wait to do it all over again come next season. PS: I may have a new addition to our group, a fellow Melbourne based fan of the sport, of whom i'd been running a separate tipping comp on a vape site i'm a member of. He's a Bulldog fan, and completely crackers about the sport! Hopefully, i may tempt him to come and join us here for next season.

Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Blastronaut Rocks.. (blastyulbynner) | 152 comments Err... I do intend to take part as normal next time around - mental and physical health allowing - so don't be getting any ideas about outing me to pass my team onto someone else! I always joke around as y'all well know but I would take exception to that particular undertaking. I realize I've been a let-down recently... in fact a total loss... and I apologize for my absence. I can't see where anyone has actually proposed such a move but it will be seen... at best a lack of respect and at worse, a hostile act. After a tantrum or two, I shall then leave the thread... the whole forum even... in a huff. I don't wanna fall out with anyone so would suggest not rocking the boat. I'm incredibly fragile at the moment and touchy.
Would like to think that Duke wasn't suggesting such a thing anyways and just merely mentioning a newcomer who happens to be a Dawgs fan. Just that my persecution complex is stuck in overdrive... but be assured there are attempts underway to depressurize and bring it down to a reasonable and safe level.

message 683: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22140 comments Blastro I think you and the Bulldogs are a match made in heaven and I wouldn't dream of splitting you asunder. They are yours for as long as you wish to be associated with them. You still managed to raise £21 for your charity this year - better than a slap in the face with a wet fish, as the saying goes. So dust off your red, white and blue scarf and brush up on their song:
Sons of the West,
Red, white and blue.
We come out snarling
Bulldogs through and through.
Bulldogs bite and Bulldogs roar,
We give our very best.
But you can't beat the boys of the Bulldogs breed,
We're the team of the mighty West

Good lord no...i wouldn't dream of such a thing! Just this other fellah shares your enthusiasm for the Bullies mate. He may decide not join us anyway, so please don't worry Blastro.

Hope you'll be feeling much better come next season's fun and games mate! :)

Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Blastronaut Rocks.. (blastyulbynner) | 152 comments Val/Duke - so sorry! Reading back that post of mine... it looks much more unpleasant than was intended. Dark clouds above but don't give me right to make assumptions like that and then post such negative vibes. Thanks for being understanding. Stress in abundance at moment but that musta been a particularly bad hour or two. No excuse to bring my personal stuff onto here and it's not the first time. Can only apologize.

Be cool if your friend does indeed join the party, Duke. Could do with this community growing rather than shrinking.

message 686: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22140 comments I didn't read it that way at all. Made me laugh!

message 687: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments So sorry Val since our return from Europe we have been struck down by horrible viruses so have failed to pick up on your wonderful donations. Just about over it now and returning to normal....well that means 4 30am alarms to get up for work which is particularly hard as nearly 2 months since last had to do.
Thank you so much for your amazing generosity Val as ever. I will be matching my donation to the koalas as normal. Given what is happening just outside Sydney they need every cent. How can it be that one of our most thriving populations of the koala has been reduced by 10% just this year due to housing development and humans incapacity to drive carefully on roads in their habitat? It is an absolute tragedy that we treat one of our most iconic treasures in this manner and I fear in time they will go the way of the Tasmanian Tiger.

Looking forward to next season already. The season never seems to end these days but guess that is more to do with the women's competition following straight on from the men. Plus we are now starting in the first week in March to cash in for the northern teams when there is no NRL due to that code trying to get a foothold in the American market in Las Vegas with 2 games. Do they really think AFL will attract a huge increase in NSW and Queensland just because the NRL is missing for a week?
At least the Swans get to start the season in the first match at the SCG against the Demons. That's an honour
