"BALL UP!" - Val's 2023 Aussie Rules Footy Tipping *Open to Everyone*
Tonight's result:Melbourne Demons (on hiatus) v Carlton Blues (available)
3.3.21 (Q1) 2.2.14
4.7.31 (Q2) 5.3.33
7.11.53 (Q3) 7.5.47
9.17.71 (Q4) 11.7.73
A cracker of a final with momentum swinging from one end to the other, plus injuries, possible reports to the Tribunal and everything inbetween. Melbourne's inaccuracy cost them dearly. Well done Carlton for never giving up - they scored the winning goal with less than a minute on the clock.
Tonight's result:Port Adelaide Power (available) v GWS Giants (Duke)
4.1.25 (Q1) 4.4.28
5.6.36 (Q2) 9.11.65
8.7.55 (Q3) 11.15.81
9.16.70 (Q4) 13.15.93
The Giants won it in the second quarter when they were unstoppable. After that, I thought they were going to emulate the Demons last night with their poor kicking. But then Port got stuck with the same goal yips. I really love the Giants' style of footy - commentator David King described it as "a tsunami". I think it's pure chaos with the aim of moving the ball forward by whatever means. Next week's game against Collingwood will certainly be interesting - can the Pies tame them?
All the players contributed but special note must be made of Stephen Coniglio - his game has turned around completely since relinquishing the captaincy; Callan Ward (be still my beating heart) has regained his form of 2016; and, of course Toby Greene and Tom Green, and not forgetting Lachie Whitfield either - from a star he seemed to lose interest in the game but now is back better than ever. Congrats to Adam Kingsley in his first year as coach.
And we have a winner - the only person to tip both winners - it's Duke! So he wins $15.00 for The Centre For Eye Research Australia. Well done!
The fall-out was like this:
Duke - 2 - 21 margin (3+18)
Sussex - 1 - 23 margin (13+10)
David - 1 - 27 margin (11+16)
Val - 1 - 32 margin (15+17)
Tim - 1 - 32 margin (17+15)
Suzy - 1 - 35 margin (5+30)
Anita - 1 - 41 margin (8+33)
Philip - 1 - 71 margin (13+58)
Steve - 0 - 55 margin (17+38)

If punters could lodge their tips by midnight THURSDAY September 21 (your time) it would be a great help, although I can accept them up until 10.45am FRIDAY (your time) if absolutely necessary.
Yay...go me! Many thanks Val. :)I forgot to add my congrats on your season win, Val, nicely done.
As for my Giants.....at the beginning of this season they were predicted to be a bottom 4 team! Instead they're a top 4 team!! :)
Adam Kingsley has done wonders for this ailing club...hats off to him. Orange Tsunami is pretty apt, their forward pressure tactic is working wonders for them. Collingwood will have their work cut out come Friday. Words going out that we could see a Brisbane v GWS final......when for a long time most were expecting a Pies v Port final!
One down, one to go!!!
Agree completely on Giants and it is with hope I am tipping them again this week but not with too much conviction because I know the support the Magpies will have and the atmosphere is likely to be overwhelming for the Giants. However, they seem to thrive on this so good luck to them. Giants by 9
Lions by 12
I know I will be crucified for predicting a non Victorian side in the final so Val, please do not pass on.
Pass on?? I hope you don't mean pass away!! No chance - I suspect my tips will be the same as yours and I think that would be a great Grand Final with a crowd that hopefully would choose a team to barrack for (if they were not already aligned). The only downside (of any combatants) is KISS - what's the appeal??
Val I feel we should have met years ago. Naturally I meant not to tell on me to fellow Victorians as I may be run out of the state. Must not be too vocal for fear of upsetting fellow contestants in our wonderful competition but the prospect of a Collingwood Carlton Final would fill me with dread. Certainly a Lions GWS would be a great spectacle.Kiss..... I simply have nothing to add to your comment which says it all. In fact I have no idea why the AFL deem it necessary to have any live entertainment at half time. It is just not worth the effort for 10 minutes. I would rather watch the children playing their games as they have done all season. What a great feeling for them it would be to be on the pitch on Grand Final day.
At least if it was Carlton/Collingwood you might get a 50/50 split in the crowd to make it even but I'd still prefer Giants/Lions. Re the entertainment, my theory is they should just rotate Aussie songs each year (perhaps with younger artists doing a cover) :
Paul Kelly - Leaps & Bounds
Hunters & Collectors - The Holy Grail
Mike Brady - Up There Cazaly and/or One Day In September
and I'm sure there's plenty of others.
I think crowd allocation for a grand final is an even split of about 17000 per team with the rest going to members and AFL Reserve plus all the important people. I was shocked last year that was how many tickets the Swans were allocated which is ridiculous given our membership is well over 50000. I was guaranteed one having paid a $100 on top of my membership to be a Premiership member which ensures a ticket if we make the Grand Final.
Tonight's result:Collingwood Magpies (on hiatus) v GWS Giants (Duke)
2.2.14 (Q1) 0.3.3
2.6.18 (Q2) 4.4.28
7.7.49 (Q3) 6.9.45
8.10.58 (Q4) 8.9.57
Well it doesn't get any closer than that. What a nail-biter!
Cracking game....the lead changed several times....but that last quarter was fantastic. GWS gave it their all.....the mighty Magpies just held on in the dying moments.
I can't believe what i'm hearing, Lions are getting smashed in the first quarter. And Blues fans massively out number the Brisbane fans at the Gabba.Edit: Er..yeah, only in that first quarter though!
Tonight's result:Brisbane Lions (David) v Carlton Blues (available)
1.2.8 (Q1) 5.1.31
6.6.42 (Q2) 6.3.39
9.9.63 (Q3) 6.7.43
11.13.79 (Q4) 9.9.63
Yes it took a quarter before the Lions hit their stride and once they got going it was hard for the Blues to peg them back. I know a lot of Melbourne people were hoping for a traditional stand-off between Collingwood and Carlton but I'm just hoping the Lions aren't overwhelmed by Grand Final atmosphere.
David is our top tipster so another $15.00 goes to The Song Room. Nice work!
The breakdown was:David - 2 - 8 margin (6+2)
Steve - 2 - 13 margin (11+2)
Anita - 2 - 15 margin (13+2)
Sussex - 2 - 22 margin (17+5)
Philip - 2 - 23 margin (19+4)
Duke - 1 - 8 margin (7+1)
Tim - 1 - 13 margin (9+4)
Val - 1 - 19 margin (12+7)
Suzy - 0 - 31 margin (8+23)

Just going with my heart with no expectation. Just hope for a better final than last season.Lions by 15
Great to see the Lions in the final. Obviously I'm going to tip them - but by how many?Lions by 9
Thanks Val
And you earned another $15.00 last night David when Lions player Lachie Neale took out the Brownlow Medal (Best & Fairest) for the second time (he won it in 2020).

Tough one to call this.....the MGC doesn't favour the Lions, but i gather it's going to a hot one in Melbourne tomorrow, with temps up to 30 degrees, which will suit the Lions just fine. Brisbane is no stranger to the swalty temps up there! On paper, this should be a Pies win, but the Lions have beaten them consistently at different venues.....so, i'm going with....Lions - 12 points
The bounce is less than 3 minutes away, just waiting on the national anthem. It's 29 degrees here with a bit of a swirly wind. KISS were okay - the make-up covers a multitude of sins and looks very theatrical so worthy of the occasion. Go Lions!!!
Lions win the toss but, as expected, Collingwood are wanting a fierce first quarter. First goal to Nick Daicos from a genuine free kick decision. Second goal to Bobby Hill.
That was a beautiful goal by Hill (I will say it for the 100th time this season, he should have landed at Essendon!). Three great goals on the run from the Lions - Zac Bailey (2) and Lincoln McCarthy, followed by another two great goals for the Pies from Brodie Mihocek and Jordan De Goey (after the siren).Quarter time score:
4.4.28 (Q1) 3.0.18
