6.8.44 (Q4) 23.14.152

Some blow-out scores today - much as was expected and as tipped by most of us. The one we didn't get was a great come-from-behind win by the Giants. That man Toby Greene scored, from range, with only 43 seconds left on the clock.

I empathise with the Crows - Bombers lost to Collingwood by a point last season and were beaten by them on Tuesday after leading for the first three quarters. Heartbreaking!

message 171: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments In response to The Duke GWS have actually beaten the Swans 4 times at the SCG and once in a "home" final for the Swans in 2016 at the Olympic Stadium during the time The Swans had to play so many matches a season contractually as part of the deal for the 2003 Olympics at that soulless place in the middle of nowhere.
In 2017 GWS won by 105 63, 2018 they won by 79 30 in an elimination final at the SCG, 2019 it was 120 79 to the Giants at the SCG and Saturday made it 4 wins in total at the SCG. I believe I have the misfortune at being at every game apart from this last weekend now I live in Melbourne.
The Giants are proving very adept at the SCG just like The Suns. Hate to say it but Toby Greene was magnificent and the responsibility of the captaincy has paid off.
And speaking of The Suns, I did say I fancied them against The Tigers but played safe and now regretting. I also said the Crows and Magpies was close to call and so that proved.
Love the 3 word phrase for The Swans which is so true. That's twice in our last two home games we have given up something like a 24 point lead in the last quarter so the defence is certainly broke. I usually blame a lot on our ruck man Peter Ladhams but he had his best game for us this weekend under the threat of Tom Hickey finally returning. One issue was Tom McCartin who was clearly not fully fit and sadly his brother Paddy is not back and I fear his career maybe over. Nothing has been said officially but his last concussion was so innocuous it raises grave doubts about his ability to play and really it is a question of if he should. His health is paramount and after about 10 concussions in his career sadly I think it is time he will have to face the truth. Sad because his comeback with The Swans was the
feel good story from last season.
My tipping this week was poor and I need to go with my gut feelings rather than playing safe. Tough one to start with though as you never know which Carlton or Brisbane team are going to show.

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments And before anyone lets me know, yes I know the Olympics in Sydney was 2000 and not 2003 but I always relate that ground to the Rugby World Cup Final of 2003 and a certain Jonny Wilkinson. My mistake but it is fairly soulless out there.

Oh wow! I was around for all of those matches (started following AFL from 2016), but clearly i'd forgotten about those wins.

message 174: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Hi Duke
I had thought they had won at the SCG a couple of times but I was surprised to find it is now 4.
Why the Giants? I guess in 2016 they were really hitting their stride for the first time.
I remember 2013 (because it was during the Lions tour here) that I caught up with some old university friends. We were in Sydney for the final test and they were desperate to go to an AFL game. The only one on they could attend was the Giants and whilst I cannot remember the exact score I think they lost by around 100 points so not a great example of our wonderful game.

message 175: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments It takes time for a new team to get success but the Giants have done well. It is vital for expansion of the game in Sydney that they do perform and for Swans fans that is always the silver lining when they beat us. Rugby League is so dominant in Sydney and, to me at least, totally boring. It is important for AFL to grow. That is why Sydney wanted the "Gather" round recently held in Adelaide. Whilst this was a great success Adelaide hardly needs a boost for the sport as, apart from cricket, it is the only sport played in that city with any numbers.
The Suns have never made a breakthrough and their attendances are woeful. This season they are just beginning to show signs of putting a half decent side together so they do receive some neutral support. The Lions on the other hand have to compete against Rugby Union and League sides which is a constant battle although they get good attendances when performing well.

message 176: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22140 comments The Giants side of 2016 was so exciting to watch. That First Preliminary Final against the Bulldogs at the Showgrounds was as exciting a game as you'll get anywhere. When Callan Ward and Phil Davis were in their prime..... that was a team! I hope when Davis does retire that he stays on in the game in some role. That day in September my daughter and s-i-l drove up to Sydney (mad Doggies supporters). She was 7 months pregnant and the game was so tense I expected her to give birth in the stands.

I've always had a bit of a soft spot for the Giants (possibly because of the Sheedy connection). When I started the footy tipping comp in 2012, there was a quick take-up of teams and the late and much-missed Mark Kibble chose the Bombers. I took a back seat until the teams were chosen and then elected to have the Giants as "my" team because they were always going to struggle in their first year.

I think Adelaide was probably chosen for the Gather round because of the grounds available. I suppose Sydney could do it if Henson Park was available, in addition to the SCG and Giants Stadium, but other grounds don't have the capacity.

message 177: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments There is a decent stadium at Blacktown International Sports Park where the Swans play some reserve games. It has also been used by NSW for Sheffield Shield matches. In fact when I first arrived in Australia before I got my first job they were playing Queensland and I went out there for the final very exciting day when Queensland finally won in the last session.
It has one decent stand and good grass banks all round.
I remember that side from 2016 and the fact the Bulldogs were in the finals as they unexpectedly beat us in the Grand Final. If memory serves me correctly the Bulldogs finished the season in 7th and we were minor premiers but got outplayed in the final.

theDuke | 6491 comments Val wrote: "The Giants side of 2016 was so exciting to watch. That First Preliminary Final against the Bulldogs at the Showgrounds was as exciting a game as you'll get anywhere. When Callan Ward and Phil Davis..."

I guess it was rather fortunate then, that when you invited me to join in for the 2016 season, you'd reclaimed your beloved Bombers back for that season....and i..knowing absolutely nothing about the game then chose to adopt the fledgling Giants as my team.....and for no other reason than a) I'm a sucker for underdog, the Giants were a young team....and b) as a lofty chap....i like the nickname 'Giants'! :)

Before this season began, i wasn't expecting much of GWS this season, i recall you or someone else mentioning that GWS were heavily in debt, to the tune of 4 million dollars (i think that was the figure)...so i do hope that they've addressed that somewhat. Based on their performance so far, i think they might have a chance of playing finals again....if they can just keep their injuries levels down a bit! Seems to be their Achilles heal, these last few seasons.

And responding to Tim's comments re the Suns....yes i agree, they've been tipped time and time again of improving & they just don't......til now though. I don't think they'll make the finals yet this season...but they could get very close...maybe.

But can anybody tell me....what is going on with Richmond?! They've got all that talent..but unable to perform so far?

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments I am still getting over the dreadful behaviour of the Collingwood supporters last Sunday. All the press have been highlighting the booing of Buddy but it was the whole team who were continually booed from the moment we ran out onto the pitch to a chorus of boos. This continued throughout the game and yes it was especially at Franklin and Papley but it was every set shot at goal too regardless of who was kicking. I get it that if you win a dodgy free to have a chance to score fans will boo but not after taking a great mark. It was awful and my two friends, one of whom has been going since the Swans moved to Sydney were absolutely dismayed. The thing that really got me were the parents with young kids booing all around us then urging the kids to follow. They thought this great fun. Support your team by all means but do not resort to this
Rant over my tips for this week are as follows:
Cats by 25 ( one week I will get close to the margin)
Suns
Swans ( remaining loyal but it is tough at the moment unless we get key defenders back)
Port
Demons
Lions
Bulldogs
Saints
Pies

Val H. | 22140 comments Couldn't agree more Tim. I don't know if Collingwood are the worst because it seems to me that almost every team's supporters do it now (my own Bombers included). Why???? Watching Eddie Maguire on Footy Classified last night, he seemed to indicate booing was okay but not at indigenous players because then it has racist overtones. Yes, it does but I don't think race should be a factor. Fact is Buddy is a champion player (albeit past his prime) but I think "champion" (apart from the fact that it is an overused term) means someone deserving of respect no matter which team they play for. We have been privileged to see Buddy at both Hawthorn and Sydney and it may well be a long time before we see his like again. And if Pies fans think it's okay to boo a player who has damaged you in past games, I presume they would then think it's okay to boo Nick Daicos every time he goes near the ball! It's getting beyond a joke.

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments I agree Val however the booing was aimed at the entire team. The chorus of boos as we ran out set out their stall from the start. The club song was drowned out completely. After that, every set shot at goal was accompanied by outrageous booing irrespective of who was taking the kick. It was a very unpleasant experience, especially watching children of 5 or 6 following their parents example. I accept some booing after bad or foul play and jeering when mistakes occur. That is natural and part of the game.
I have not experienced this with other teams and can say your Bombers fans have always behaved impeccably when I have been around.
