Some blow-out scores today - much as was expected and as tipped by most of us. The one we didn't get was a great come-from-behind win by the Giants. That man Toby Greene scored, from range, with only 43 seconds left on the clock.

Essendon Bombers (Val) v Geelong Cats (available)
2.0.12 (Q1) 6.3.39
7.2.44 (Q2) 14.4.88

6.15.51 (Q3) 5.5.35
7.16.58 (Q4) 8.11.59
I empathise with the Crows - Bombers lost to Collingwood by a point last season and were beaten by them on Tuesday after leading for the first three quarters. Heartbreaking!

Round 7 (first number is correct number of wins - you want this to be high; number in brackets is the cumulative margin which is used to separate punters on the same amount of points - you want this to be low)

ROUND 8
Friday May 5
Carlton Blues v Brisbane Lions (in Melbourne)
Saturday May 6
Richmond Tigers v West Coast Eagles (in Melbourne)
Geelong Cats v Adelaide Crows (in Geelong)
Gold Coast Suns v Melbourne Demons (on the Gold Coast)
GWS Giants v Western Bulldogs (in Canberra)

North Melbourne Kangaroos v St Kilda Saints (in Melbourne)
If punters could lodge their tips by midnight THURSDAY May 4 (your time) it would be a great help, although I can accept them up until 10.45am FRIDAY (your time) if absolutely necessary.

ADELAIDE CROWS: Goalkicking blew it.
BRISBANE LIONS: Another Gabba ton.
CARLTON: Needed that. Breathe.
COLLINGWOOD: Another Magpie miracle.
ESSENDON: Recovered after Q1.
FREMANTLE: Aggressive, at least...
GEELONG: They’re definitely back.
GOLD COAST SUNS: Sound the trumpet!
GWS GIANTS: Toby (Green) the genius.
HAWTHORN: Midfield growth promising.
MELBOURNE: A practice match.
NORTH MELBOURNE: They were horrendous.
PORT ADELAIDE: More than tenable.
RICHMOND: In genuine strife.
ST KILDA: Need Max (Gawn) back.
SYDNEY SWANS: Defence is broken.
WEST COAST EAGLES: No end visible?
WESTERN BULLDOGS: Bont (Marcus Bontempelli) best ever?

In 2017 GWS won by 105 63, 2018 they won by 79 30 in an elimination final at the SCG, 2019 it was 120 79 to the Giants at the SCG and Saturday made it 4 wins in total at the SCG. I believe I have the misfortune at being at every game apart from this last weekend now I live in Melbourne.
The Giants are proving very adept at the SCG just like The Suns. Hate to say it but Toby Greene was magnificent and the responsibility of the captaincy has paid off.
And speaking of The Suns, I did say I fancied them against The Tigers but played safe and now regretting. I also said the Crows and Magpies was close to call and so that proved.
Love the 3 word phrase for The Swans which is so true. That's twice in our last two home games we have given up something like a 24 point lead in the last quarter so the defence is certainly broke. I usually blame a lot on our ruck man Peter Ladhams but he had his best game for us this weekend under the threat of Tom Hickey finally returning. One issue was Tom McCartin who was clearly not fully fit and sadly his brother Paddy is not back and I fear his career maybe over. Nothing has been said officially but his last concussion was so innocuous it raises grave doubts about his ability to play and really it is a question of if he should. His health is paramount and after about 10 concussions in his career sadly I think it is time he will have to face the truth. Sad because his comeback with The Swans was the
feel good story from last season.
My tipping this week was poor and I need to go with my gut feelings rather than playing safe. Tough one to start with though as you never know which Carlton or Brisbane team are going to show.
Lions by 12
Tigers (they are so bad at moment but even the Eagles should be easy prey) Sorry Sussex
Cats
Demons
Giants
Fremantle
Essendon
Magpies (sadly but I will be there trying to raise The Swans)
Saints

Oh wow! I was around for all of those matches (started following AFL from 2016), but clearly i'd forgotten about those wins.

I had thought they had won at the SCG a couple of times but I was surprised to find it is now 4.
Why the Giants? I guess in 2016 they were really hitting their stride for the first time.
I remember 2013 (because it was during the Lions tour here) that I caught up with some old university friends. We were in Sydney for the final test and they were desperate to go to an AFL game. The only one on they could attend was the Giants and whilst I cannot remember the exact score I think they lost by around 100 points so not a great example of our wonderful game.

The Suns have never made a breakthrough and their attendances are woeful. This season they are just beginning to show signs of putting a half decent side together so they do receive some neutral support. The Lions on the other hand have to compete against Rugby Union and League sides which is a constant battle although they get good attendances when performing well.

I've always had a bit of a soft spot for the Giants (possibly because of the Sheedy connection). When I started the footy tipping comp in 2012, there was a quick take-up of teams and the late and much-missed Mark Kibble chose the Bombers. I took a back seat until the teams were chosen and then elected to have the Giants as "my" team because they were always going to struggle in their first year.
I think Adelaide was probably chosen for the Gather round because of the grounds available. I suppose Sydney could do it if Henson Park was available, in addition to the SCG and Giants Stadium, but other grounds don't have the capacity.

It has one decent stand and good grass banks all round.
I remember that side from 2016 and the fact the Bulldogs were in the finals as they unexpectedly beat us in the Grand Final. If memory serves me correctly the Bulldogs finished the season in 7th and we were minor premiers but got outplayed in the final.

I guess it was rather fortunate then, that when you invited me to join in for the 2016 season, you'd reclaimed your beloved Bombers back for that season....and i..knowing absolutely nothing about the game then chose to adopt the fledgling Giants as my team.....and for no other reason than a) I'm a sucker for underdog, the Giants were a young team....and b) as a lofty chap....i like the nickname 'Giants'! :)
Before this season began, i wasn't expecting much of GWS this season, i recall you or someone else mentioning that GWS were heavily in debt, to the tune of 4 million dollars (i think that was the figure)...so i do hope that they've addressed that somewhat. Based on their performance so far, i think they might have a chance of playing finals again....if they can just keep their injuries levels down a bit! Seems to be their Achilles heal, these last few seasons.
And responding to Tim's comments re the Suns....yes i agree, they've been tipped time and time again of improving & they just don't......til now though. I don't think they'll make the finals yet this season...but they could get very close...maybe.
But can anybody tell me....what is going on with Richmond?! They've got all that talent..but unable to perform so far?

Carlton Blues (available) v Brisbane Lions (David)
5.1.31 (Q1) 5.3.33
6.3.39 (Q2) 7.7.49
6.5.41 (Q3) 12.9.81
11.8.74 (Q4) 15.10.100
In the first quarter Carlton looked as though they were going to put up a good fight but it all went to pot from that time on. They did come back a bit in the fourth but by then it was too late. Sussex wins $7.00 for the Save the Bilby fund with his tip of the Lions by 19. Well done.

Richmond Tigers (Philip) v West Coast Eagles (Sussex)

11.6.72 (Q3) 11.6.72
13.7.85 (Q4) 13.12.90
Tigers getting a much-needed win. Adelaide and the Suns - two teams that just would not go away. You couldn't help barracking for the underdog - especially the Suns who were very game in defeat.

Congrats to Sussex on winning the double. Steve's forgetfulness allows the rest of us to make up some points but doubtless he'll be back to show us how it's done.

Port
Demons
Lions
Bulldogs

I have not experienced this with other teams and can say your Bombers fans have always behaved impeccably when I have been around.
