Well none of us (apart from Suzy) saw the first result. The Cats were never really in it. Too many fumbles, stray passes and poor kicking. Suzy picks up another $7 for Friends With Dignity as she had the closest margin.

I was out this afternoon so I don't know what happened to the Swans - and that was their home game. I saw quite a bit of the Hawthorn-Melbourne game. I reckon in a year or two those Hawks are going to be flying high again. Essendon weren't disgraced but their midfield was no match for Brisbane's. I thought Andy McGrath did a good job on quelling the danger that is Charlie Cameron. Keeping an eye on the Blues-Doggies game, I thought I was in with a chance with about 10 minutes to go. Should have gone with the majority of tipsters.

Adelaide Crows (Dean) v St Kilda Saints (Tim)
6.2.38 (Q1) 1.1.7

ADELAIDE CROWS: Their kicking? Beautiful.
BRISBANE LIONS: Joe’s (Daniher kicked 6 goals) big show.
CARLTON: Play faster! Please!
COLLINGWOOD: Comfortable win? Huh?
ESSENDON: Defence problematic again.
FREMANTLE: Are they back?
GEELONG: Bad kicking hurts.
GOLD COAST SUNS: Biggest away win.
GWS GIANTS: Uncompetitive... for once.
HAWTHORN: Favourites next week!
MELBOURNE: Cruise control resumes.
NORTH MELBOURNE: Now injuries, too.
PORT ADELAIDE: Built some percentage.
RICHMOND: Wound back clock.
ST KILDA: Comebacks a struggle.
SYDNEY SWANS: Horrific injury run.
WEST COAST EAGLES: Keeps getting worse...
WESTERN BULLDOGS: Arty’s (Arthur Jones) a star.

Val I was just wondering if you have heard of "The Curiously Specific Book Club" which is a podcast about looking into the facts behind certain novels such as locations etc. Very interesting and something my wife has introduced me to.

ROBBO: SYDNEY IS ON THE NOSE
They went in with plans on Sunday. One was to get in the face of Nick Daicos, which kind of worked, and another plan was to try to control the ball via foot and hands. They took 120 uncontested marks to Collingwood’s 63 and uncontested possessions were 294-195.
It worked for three quarters, but they were overrun. Who isn’t overrun by the Magpies? Still, there are some serious issues at the Swans.
They have lost five of their past six matches, remembering that their first two wins came against Gold Coast and Hawthorn. Since round two, they are 13th for points scored and 16th for points conceded, although injuries to defenders has played a role there, and they are a bottom-six team in points from turnover and stoppage differential.
It all sounds a bit technical, so we’ll explain it the old fashioned way: they are not a good team.
Inconsistency from their two X-factor forwards, Tom Papley and Isaac Heeney, is stark. Papley has kicked 12 goals in his five matches, but six of those goals came against Richmond in round five. Heeney is tantalising and an All-Australian, and he’s playing without impact. He’s had 21 shots at goal for 7.7 and seven shots didn’t score.
This is not the grand final team of last year. This is a team in 11th spot on the ladder, equal in wins with Fremantle, which has been heavily criticised for its season.
THE TACKLE: https://bit.ly/3nB0amg

We just need our key defenders back and some confidence. Good players do not suddenly become bad.
Hopefully we will be able to regain some credibility on Saturday against The Roos but unless we get McCartin and Rampe back we are going to struggle in defence.

I don't tend to listen to podcasts much - I'd rather read or even watch quality TV. But I'm intrigued to explore further and have found it on my phone. The one podcast I do enjoy is the ABC's The History Listen. Highly recommend the episode "Diamond Jack, Smirnov and the Pelikaan".

I am intrigued by this particular one but you are correct in saying it benefits if you do know the area.
One author we love, Elly Griffiths, in her Ruth Galloway novels set in Norfolk, would clearly benefit. Love her books and descriptions of Norfolk but you simply cannot drive from Kings Lynn to Norwich in about 30 minutes as many characters seem to manage! Norfolk is famous for its lack of motorways and that is its charm.

I don't know Norfolk at all (other than it's supposed to be very flat and is home to The Broads) but if it's a county dear to your heart, you may like Tombland by C.J. Sansom, another great favourite of mine. He's written seven books in the Shardlake series, all historical fiction with a crime embedded; the first six are in the reign of Henry VIII and the last (Tombland) in the protectorate of Edward VI. I much prefer Sansom to Hilary Mantel when it comes to historical fiction but I'm not sure if it's fair to compare them, apart from great period detail, for Sansom always incorporates crime. But Tombland (which is a sizeable tome at about 800 pages) is very much about the history of Norfolk in Tudor times.

I think you will love Ruth Galloway. Very evocative of the salt marshes fringing the coast where she has an isolated home. Read from the start though because characters develop and you get to know them. Elly also has a series written in Brighton on the South Coast where she lives. This is set in the 1950's going into the 60's and is based around a magician called Max who worked for the secret service in the 2nd World War. I find these beautifully written about this period of history in the UK. I think there are only 6 or 7 of these so far but again read from the start.
Another author I love of detective novels are by Kate Ellis set in Devon. There are about 26 of these but very easy reads. The stories feature Wesley Peterson who has moved to Devon from the Met Police. They feature his university mate who is an archaeologist and each novel intertwines a current murder with the dig his mate Neil is currently working on. We both love them because they are set in beautiful Devon in an area we know really well. The main irritant is Kate changes place names when it is obvious where they are. For instance Dartmouth where they are based is changed to Tradmouth with the town over the river changed from Kingswear to Queenswear. Only a minor quibble but she may have a reason.
I can name many other novel series such as Peter Robinson Inspector Banks (don't watch the tv series which is awful) and Stephen Booth's Cooper and Fry series. Former set in Yorkshire and latter in Derbyshire.
We read these from the start when they first appeared in the mid 1980's I would imagine.
Think I should put these notes on a different strand of this site.
Our dear friend Jenny in Queensland is like you a great fan of British crime and read the Ruth's in about 2 months. Loved them.

Having seen the replay now of the last crazy minute of the game at Marvel and now recall Chris and I chatting over Norths interchanges in the 3rd quarter I believe. We were sitting just behind the benches and there had been a few incidents of players not happy coming off or who was going on. There was certainly plenty of ill feeling down there at times.

I am impressed with Sonia Hood who did stand very tall yesterday and is having very bitter swipes at Hawthorn. That saga has gone and is going on for far too long seemingly with no end in sight.
