Val H. | 22140 comments Tonight's results:

Richmond Tigers (Philip) v Geelong Cats (available)
6.0.36 (Q1) 2.7.19
8.3.51 (Q2) 5.11.41
11.5.71 (Q3) 7.11.53
16.6.102 (Q4) 11.12.78

West Coast Eagles (Sussex) v Gold Coast Suns (Suzy)
2.3.15 (Q1) 3.2.20

5.7.37 (Q3) 11.10.76
6.7.43 (Q4) 16.17.113

Well none of us (apart from Suzy) saw the first result. The Cats were never really in it. Too many fumbles, stray passes and poor kicking. Suzy picks up another $7 for Friends With Dignity as she had the closest margin.

I was out this afternoon so I don't know what happened to the Swans - and that was their home game. I saw quite a bit of the Hawthorn-Melbourne game. I reckon in a year or two those Hawks are going to be flying high again. Essendon weren't disgraced but their midfield was no match for Brisbane's. I thought Andy McGrath did a good job on quelling the danger that is Charlie Cameron. Keeping an eye on the Blues-Doggies game, I thought I was in with a chance with about 10 minutes to go. Should have gone with the majority of tipsters.

Val H. | 22140 comments Every team analysed after Round 9 in just three words.

ADELAIDE CROWS: Their kicking? Beautiful.

BRISBANE LIONS: Joe’s (Daniher kicked 6 goals) big show.

CARLTON: Play faster! Please!

COLLINGWOOD: Comfortable win? Huh?

ESSENDON: Defence problematic again.

FREMANTLE: Are they back?

GEELONG: Bad kicking hurts.

GOLD COAST SUNS: Biggest away win.

GWS GIANTS: Uncompetitive... for once.

HAWTHORN: Favourites next week!

MELBOURNE: Cruise control resumes.

NORTH MELBOURNE: Now injuries, too.

PORT ADELAIDE: Built some percentage.

RICHMOND: Wound back clock.

ST KILDA: Comebacks a struggle.

SYDNEY SWANS: Horrific injury run.

WEST COAST EAGLES: Keeps getting worse...

WESTERN BULLDOGS: Arty’s (Arthur Jones) a star.

message 215: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Just cannot believe my Swans can get any more injuries. Co- captain Callum Mills was subbed out after about 2 minutes of Saturday's match closely followed by Logan McDonald. With North Melbourne next Saturday we should have a chance but just do not know what sort of team can be fielded especially in defence. Anyway I will be there at Marvel to try and cheer them back to winning ways. Then only one game at home to Carlton before our bye which hopefully will give some players time to return.
Val I was just wondering if you have heard of "The Curiously Specific Book Club" which is a podcast about looking into the facts behind certain novels such as locations etc. Very interesting and something my wife has introduced me to.

message 216: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22140 comments I am not a fan of Mark Robertson's opinions and his waffly delivery drives me crazy. This is what he said of the Swans/Pies game:

ROBBO: SYDNEY IS ON THE NOSE
They went in with plans on Sunday. One was to get in the face of Nick Daicos, which kind of worked, and another plan was to try to control the ball via foot and hands. They took 120 uncontested marks to Collingwood’s 63 and uncontested possessions were 294-195.

It worked for three quarters, but they were overrun. Who isn’t overrun by the Magpies? Still, there are some serious issues at the Swans.

They have lost five of their past six matches, remembering that their first two wins came against Gold Coast and Hawthorn. Since round two, they are 13th for points scored and 16th for points conceded, although injuries to defenders has played a role there, and they are a bottom-six team in points from turnover and stoppage differential.

It all sounds a bit technical, so we’ll explain it the old fashioned way: they are not a good team.

Inconsistency from their two X-factor forwards, Tom Papley and Isaac Heeney, is stark. Papley has kicked 12 goals in his five matches, but six of those goals came against Richmond in round five. Heeney is tantalising and an All-Australian, and he’s playing without impact. He’s had 21 shots at goal for 7.7 and seven shots didn’t score.

This is not the grand final team of last year. This is a team in 11th spot on the ladder, equal in wins with Fremantle, which has been heavily criticised for its season.

THE TACKLE: https://bit.ly/3nB0amg

message 217: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments I am not a fan either and he has never been a fan of The Swans. Old-fashioned Melbourne bias I am afraid.
We just need our key defenders back and some confidence. Good players do not suddenly become bad.
Hopefully we will be able to regain some credibility on Saturday against The Roos but unless we get McCartin and Rampe back we are going to struggle in defence.

message 218: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22140 comments I haven't heard about the "The Curiously Specific Book Club" but it certainly piqued my interest. At a quick glance I liked some of the themes (e.g. London Blitz) but not so much the book titles (didn't enjoy "Crooked Heart" or "Life After Life"). Some I liked both the scene and the books (London Spies: The Ipcress File. Slow Horses. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy). With others I liked some of the book titles without knowing a lot about the area (Into the West Country: The Remains of the Day. Rebecca. The Mayor of Casterbridge).

I don't tend to listen to podcasts much - I'd rather read or even watch quality TV. But I'm intrigued to explore further and have found it on my phone. The one podcast I do enjoy is the ABC's The History Listen. Highly recommend the episode "Diamond Jack, Smirnov and the Pelikaan".

message 219: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Thank you for your recommendation. My wife Victoria is a Podcast fan and follows many.
I am intrigued by this particular one but you are correct in saying it benefits if you do know the area.
One author we love, Elly Griffiths, in her Ruth Galloway novels set in Norfolk, would clearly benefit. Love her books and descriptions of Norfolk but you simply cannot drive from Kings Lynn to Norwich in about 30 minutes as many characters seem to manage! Norfolk is famous for its lack of motorways and that is its charm.

message 220: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22140 comments I love crime novels - especially British ones. I like Ann Cleeves and Val McDermid, also Ian Rankin, Elizabeth George, Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling), Minette Walters and many more but I don't know Elly Griffiths at all. I see there are rather a lot of Ruth Galloway novels. I'm also a fan of Aussie noir - especially Garry Disher (in particular the Hirsch series), Jane Harper, Peter Temple (really South African).

I don't know Norfolk at all (other than it's supposed to be very flat and is home to The Broads) but if it's a county dear to your heart, you may like Tombland by C.J. Sansom, another great favourite of mine. He's written seven books in the Shardlake series, all historical fiction with a crime embedded; the first six are in the reign of Henry VIII and the last (Tombland) in the protectorate of Edward VI. I much prefer Sansom to Hilary Mantel when it comes to historical fiction but I'm not sure if it's fair to compare them, apart from great period detail, for Sansom always incorporates crime. But Tombland (which is a sizeable tome at about 800 pages) is very much about the history of Norfolk in Tudor times.

message 221: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Thanks again for the recommendation and I will investigate. Norfolk was a powerhouse in Tudor times so does make sense.

I think you will love Ruth Galloway. Very evocative of the salt marshes fringing the coast where she has an isolated home. Read from the start though because characters develop and you get to know them. Elly also has a series written in Brighton on the South Coast where she lives. This is set in the 1950's going into the 60's and is based around a magician called Max who worked for the secret service in the 2nd World War. I find these beautifully written about this period of history in the UK. I think there are only 6 or 7 of these so far but again read from the start.

Another author I love of detective novels are by Kate Ellis set in Devon. There are about 26 of these but very easy reads. The stories feature Wesley Peterson who has moved to Devon from the Met Police. They feature his university mate who is an archaeologist and each novel intertwines a current murder with the dig his mate Neil is currently working on. We both love them because they are set in beautiful Devon in an area we know really well. The main irritant is Kate changes place names when it is obvious where they are. For instance Dartmouth where they are based is changed to Tradmouth with the town over the river changed from Kingswear to Queenswear. Only a minor quibble but she may have a reason.

I can name many other novel series such as Peter Robinson Inspector Banks (don't watch the tv series which is awful) and Stephen Booth's Cooper and Fry series. Former set in Yorkshire and latter in Derbyshire.

We read these from the start when they first appeared in the mid 1980's I would imagine.

Think I should put these notes on a different strand of this site.

Our dear friend Jenny in Queensland is like you a great fan of British crime and read the Ruth's in about 2 months. Loved them.

message 239: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22140 comments I answer to Bal because that's what my two grandsons have always called me. "Other Grandma" answers to Cake (her name is Kay). I was down in Geelong today (to see the Clarice Beckett exhibition at the Art Gallery - a great day out!) but was following the scores on the way home on the train. Mr H has always followed North so I have a bit of a soft spot for them. I thought they had it in the bag with about 5 minutes to go. Not a good way to lose (or win) a game. Bloody Rampe! I haven't forgiven him for the goal post wobbling tactic against Essendon.

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments My Swans buddy Chris was telling me at the match yesterday that Norths spent 10 years being lined up to move to Sydney to be the second team there before a whole new team was started in GWS. In that period they list the Norths name and were only known as the Kangaroos. Must have been hard for Mr H during those years.
Having seen the replay now of the last crazy minute of the game at Marvel and now recall Chris and I chatting over Norths interchanges in the 3rd quarter I believe. We were sitting just behind the benches and there had been a few incidents of players not happy coming off or who was going on. There was certainly plenty of ill feeling down there at times.

message 248: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22140 comments North has long been the whipping boy (see also Fitzroy, Footscray and South Melbourne) of the AFL despite their massive successes from the 60s to the 90s. They made a Preliminary Final in 2014. The AFL has treated some clubs like pawns - move them where it suits them. Some Fitzroy supporters will never follow the Bears/Lions just as some Souths supporters will never follow the Swans (do you know the song "When the Swans Return" by Weddings, Parties, Anything?). I believe Footscray has survived because it suits the AFL to have a team in the western suburbs. I hope North keep fighting the good fight - at least their President, Sonia Hood, seems to stand tall.

message 249: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments I have followed some of the stories behind relocating teams in the name of expansion. In all cases little thought or respect was granted to the loyal supporters. It continues however to amaze me how large the Swans support remains in Melbourne. Yesterday for instance I would think Swans fans outnumbered Norths by at least 2 to 1. I would say this sort of attitude to relocations would never happen in the UK but Wimbledon FC moved to Milton Keynes and became the MK Dons. It has also happened in Rugby Union but not always with success and take the demise of the former great club Wasps as a prime example who are now trying to restart in the very bottom tier which is about 11 levels below where they were before going into administration.
I am impressed with Sonia Hood who did stand very tall yesterday and is having very bitter swipes at Hawthorn. That saga has gone and is going on for far too long seemingly with no end in sight.
