Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1426 comments I read The Baghdad Clock by Shahad Al Rawi; translated from the Arabic by Luke Leafgren.
The novel's strength lies in Al Rawi's ability to show the devastating impact of wars and sanctions on a neighborhood in Iraq. War causes the disintegration of a community and has a profound impact on people's personal lives.
But I think there were some problematic issues with the novel's execution, especially with the narrative voice.

Rosh ~catching up slowly~ (roshreviews) | 425 comments Two children's illustrated fantasy books. Both spooky without being scary.
1. The Firelight Apprentice by Bree Paulsen
The Firelight Apprentice by Bree Paulsen
Not as wonderful as the Garlic and the Vampire series, but still quite good.

Beanie the Bansheenie by Eoin Colfer
I haven't read the popular Artemis Fowl series, but if this book is any indication of the imaginativeness, I'd love to read more by this author.

Kavithri (Ghosts of Ethuran, #1) by Aman J. Bedi
The first of a planned trilogy. Adult fantasy, very dark and gruesome. Read it for the Indian connection and wasn't disappointed. (But was definitely grossed out by the gore!)
