Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Ditto! Glad you are feeling better!

Re the licensed companions' goals... Haha! They always seem way too far -fetched... But when I was younger, I hung out with a bunch of aspiring drag queens and some budding "exotic dancers", and the girls always said that they wanted to save money for college, and the guys always said they wanted to meet a sugar daddy... None of their goals were at all attainable in relation to their efforts. I have no idea what happened to most of them, but I will never forget how it all seemed like a dream and how they were willing to use their bodies and attractiveness, but not willing to even a conversation which approached practicality... I also know I could have never done what they were doing. I guess it is a certain type of personality that gravitates to those professions, and them saying they want a regular job or college is only something that they feel is expected of them. What sucks is, we all get older and those jobs don't have the longevity of a desk job... But the same could be said for physical labor... Maybe we all want to project what we are expected to want, even if it is impossible to achieve? I have no idea...

Near 50% already... these go down so easy, like Nyssa said...

This one seems heavy on sex... like the one with the subliminal music... but without that impetus to be sex-heavy (guess it's the holidays... first Christmas :D )

message 405: by Nyssa (new) - added it

Nyssa | 1651 comments I'm practically immune to the sex scenes at this point. It's like, "Oh, there go, Roarke and Eve, being themselves again." LOL

One thing I appreciate throughout this series is that Eve's background isn't just neatly tucked away just because she talked about it with Dr. Mira.
She suffered long-term trauma, and that takes a hell of a long time to heal, especially if the person isn't actively working to do so. It makes sense for her to have PTSD episodes.

Yea, it's long-term healing... 30-40+ books... #33 New York to Dallas resolves alot of the lingering stuff, when Dallas and Roarke go to Dallas, Texas for a case, the town where she was found...

Oh, no. Since I can borrow the books from the library, I'm purchasing the unabridged audiobooks with the credits from my Audible subscription. However, they are running out soon. It's annoying that Audible doesn't take gift cards.

Audible will tempt you with 3 credits instantly for money, when you run out or down to 1 credit... it wants you money, don't worry >:D

I think it matches your subscription price... or it goes for the cheapest platinum annual price... i dunno... it offers me credits for $9.49 (3 for $28.47)... and I'm on the 24 credits for $230 plan...

It's 24 credits in 1 year... equivalent of 2 credits a month...

These are all the options I see:

It sounds like the annual 1 credit/month-similar plan is discounted the first year... the way it says first year like that...

Midwest USA... usually, with a bit of Google Magic, you can find better deals for people who haven't signed up yet...

I found $30 off the yearly (that seems to be for anyone switching, since it matches my screenshot)... 4 months for $6/mo... that no credit subscription for $3/mo for a few months... today, prime members can get 2 free credits with the 30 day free trial...

WOW... I just found this active promotion, through an old reddit thread with a link... found it nowhere online... says you can use it until next week, too... fine print says only if you got an email, but there's a button to get the deal so I dunno... let's you get a year (12 credits) for $75 tho... https://www.audible.com/promotion/off...

I think online dating is more common than old forms of introduction / dating now?... the pandemic accelerated alot of things that were already true...

Finished book 7... this was definitely the first surprise villain, for me, even on re-read...

McNab's interest in Peabody is/was a definite shift from "she's not my type" in book 6...

The endings are always so abrupt...

message 430: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35238 comments Mod
I'm enjoying it alot... they go down easy... and the things that started grating on me when I continued with new releases at 40+ are bothering me less now for some reason... either it's less bothersome early on, or I like having people to discuss with...

I like that we're zooming along... I'd be all aboard the train to rush ahead of schedule, if I didn't know there was a brick wall of Buddy Reads coming up next week :D

message 431: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments I feel the same way. I am really enjoying them. I know the subject, which is the murders in every book, are gruesome and disturbing, but somehow the books still feel very relaxing and fun to read... It's a contradiction, but as Nyssa said, they hit the spot! So glad we decided to do this!!!<3

My problem was more the repetitive Eve tropes and group dynamics, I think...

Like, it drives me crazy how often Eve's computer/car is faulty... mostly because the timeline is super tight, and it seems insane, when they keep replacing things and they immediately break down... I think the series is forced to do it to keep up with real world technological advancements, even tho the series spans 3 years, but they've been publishing over 30 years...

I agree.

I'm tired of Eve and Summerset snapping at each other, and like you, I'm tired of her things constantly breaking.

But other than that, I am enjoying the series!

As for next month, What was I thinking!?!?! I have to fit like 3,200+ pages into 31 days if I want to finish everything I have scheduled for January!

You guys also make good points about how unsafe flying cars sound... I mean... driving on streets is pretty dangerous... only works because/when people drive following lines on the road... that all goes out the window when you add up and down...

Right?? I feel like they would have bonded a bit by now... Their relationship is interesting to say the least... But like Nirkatze said maybe we're expecting more from fictional characters... I have two people who I'm really close to who don't get along with eachother all that well, y'know?

Nyssa wrote: "You guys will spoil me to where I can no longer read a series by myself! LOL

That's my problem...

Step 1) Find a new book to read...
Step 2) Mention it on GR / FBR...
Step 3) Garner interest...
Step 4) Now I need to find something else to read, because others want to Buddy Read the initial book...

:D

I mostly read series... it's rare I read standalones, except from the few authors I follow that occasionally release standalones (Scalzi), or who pretty much only do standalones (Blake Crouch)...

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments I love those problems! As I always say, we are blessed to have the problems and then "solve" them together:)))

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments ended up reading Midnight in Death too... which was basically the same format as her novels, just a quicker time frame.. but the baddie in this one was seriously sadistic my gods (I guess they are in all the books, but still)

Nyssa | 1651 comments I found the 24 Credit option on my Audible Account and updated my subscription. It's spendy, but at the rate, I'm eating up those credits, it's worth it (for any selection, the costs $10+ anyway, and this series counts).

I'll pay "cash" for audiobooks that cost less. Amazon has a lot of titles where you can add the audio for $7.49 when you purchase the book.

It's frustrating that the credits expire, though. I hate being "forced" to use something up.

Yea... there's lots of ways to get books cheaper... the endless sales... the two-for-one-credit deals... Whispersync pricing working with KU checkouts, etc...

Also... credits each have a unique expiration date, I think (it just lists the closest in the popup/dropdown, and annual members get all their credits at once)... if you buy something, don't like it, and refund it, that credit gets a new 12 month expiration date from the date of refund... FYI

In an emergency, if you don't use all your credits, you can also pre-order some new releases in favorite series that haven't come out yet...

Those are all my tricks/loopholes, if you need them :D

I haven't been buying as many books lately, despite reading a ton, because I check so much out on Hoopla each month, Audible Plus & Kindle Unlimited discoveries, and 50% re-reads... and Audible Sales...

The Audible credit expiration came about because of a lawsuit, I think...

Oh!?!

Right now, between the In Death &Leviathan Wakes series, I know I'll be listening while I read. I also got the audio for Fairy Tale (one of my January reads). I might see if they're available for the Codex Alera series, but I haven't decided yet, especially since I'll be reading those in paperback format, not Kindle.

There was a class action lawsuit that said losing credits when you unsubscribe breaks federal banking law and California state law, regulating gift certificate expiration... so a bunch of people got back credits and some banking overdraft fees...

Then, shortly after the settlement, Audible unveiled the new yearly expiration system that started a year or 2 ago... and probably a EULA (end user license agreement) update...
