Iron Man, In Death Series, Buddy Read Challenge [Next Release: #61 Framed in Death -- September 2nd, 2025]

This series has a huge cast of characters, over time... it's a shame when something bad DOES happen... (view spoiler)

Thanks Iain! I remember thinking about this when I read the series at first... I have terrible memory for names and had I kept notes, it would have helped...
You did it better than I even imagined!!!
There's a pretty in-depth In Death wiki out there... that's what I used... I'm already forgetting names... :D
You might want to check it out, honestly... it keeps track of characters, chapter plot summaries of the books, and what they call YANNIs (Yet Another Notable/Nonsensical/Noticeable Nora Inconsistancy) (something bound to happen when you create a 55 book series on such a tight timeline)...
https://indeath.fandom.com/wiki/In_De...
Naked In Death takes place between February 13th & February 22nd, 2058... Glory In Death picks up on May 3rd... that might be one of the longest gaps in the series... (view spoiler)
I looked a bit ahead... the first 7 books fill in 2058, all the way to Christmas Eve, then the first short story covers Christmas to New Year's, and book 8 picks up on January 12th... the beginning of the tighter timeline to come... book 54 takes place from June 7th to 9th, 2061... the newest book isn't fully transcribed onto the wiki yet...

I also thought of a 3rd series reading schedule that could have been tried... schedule the first BR for February 13th, and try to start each book on the day the book starts up... so a slow first year, then things get varyingly hectic as the series progresses... some books have no gap, others are weeks apart... it would honestly be hell to schedule, lol... but fun to watch people attempt, as an audience...

Also, apparently the first book came out in 1995, not 96... 27 years ago!!!!! Wow, time flies, doesn't it?!

makes sense... 55 books in 27.5 years of 6 month releases...

I definitely need to get to the short stories and #13 in the coming week... and Dresden is coming up... maybe some other stuff I'm forgetting, too...

I like the characters; I certainly preferred Eve to Rourke - I have a soft spot for tough-yet-vulnerable female characters. And I liked the side characters. They even have a cat! :D
I would say the story was a classic whodunnit in a slightly sci-fi setting (that's not a criticism!) with a dash of police procedural -I suppose the author can excuse any 'errors' with police procedure as 'they do things differently in the future'.
So I say about a 3.5 star read for me. I hope I'll be giving the later books 4 or even 5 stars!

Yep. We will be here:)

Agreeing with a lot of you about not so much liking Rourke so far, but I'll keep an open mind!
I like Eve so far, and really liked Mavis!
Who ended up being the murderer (view spoiler)
I'm also not committed fully, but my library has books 2 and 3 so I'll go at least till then

Hello everyone, this is an interesting challenge. I'll try to follow as much as I can. I'll start book 1 soon.
Not sure if I'll make it till the end haha

Started #2: I swear... sometimes characters say offensive things, just because they're an expedient way to get the backstory across... (view spoiler)
I started the first one. I'm not very far into it but it's very readable, the writing flows nicely. I admit there are some outdated statements but it's not too bad.

My Libby hold came through, and a mysterious benefactor lent me the audio. So I'm listening as I read along. (I have to with audiobooks, or the voices end up being background noise). Having it, though, will allow me to read faster than my average pace, so it is very appreciated.
I placed Glory in Death on hold a week ago, so it will either be available later this week or sometime next week; and Immortal in Death is currently available to borrow, but I want to wait until I'm closer to reading it.

"The receptionist was magnificently breasted" cracked me up!
This book was written by Nora Roberts / JD Robb... trying to reel in a male audience, tho, I guess :D
This series definitely puts the sex appeal / prostitution / licensed companionship front and center, at times... it surprises me, given Eve's backstory... maybe I'm expecting too much emotional trauma?...

Choko wrote: "Was it 94? Wow! However, I think she successfully enlisted some male readership, because I used to chat about the series with a couple of hard-core fans who were dudes... It definitely has the 90's..."
it's really not bad. It's just crazy to think how things have changed haha

I'm still preferring Eve to Rourke; I think Rourke is trying to hold back his controlling tendencies with regard to their relationship (view spoiler)

No need to worry, there, Shaitarn... if anything, you're gonna get some opposite whiplash :D

You guys are going way too fast for me.
I don't think I'll be able to contribute to the thread much.
But I do look forward to reading as many of the books as I can.
We'll always be around, for the stragglers... that's the fun of a series thread like this, similar to the Wandering Inn, which is like 300-400 hours of audiobooks and counting...
It's not so much talking about the plots as it is about the characters... that's one of the reasons I was all for a single thread like this, and the jokey title...
When I describe this series, it's the closest I think a book series comes to a cop show... after the first books, Eve is literally solving a case a week, half the time, in the in-series timeline... and it builds up a large cast of supporting characters to the main team of 5-10 (I'd say the main team is Eve/Roarke, Peabody/McNab, Feeny, Dr. Mira, a few of the Feeny's techies, and then some of Eve's fellow detectives in the bullpen, like Carmicheal/Trueheart... but that's a bit later)...

I edited the thread title and book link... the thread title is too long to be doing too much more with it, I think, like tracking which book the weekly/monthly are on... so I'm just going to append a week tracker, and link the current book for the weekly readers... monthly readers should be on week divide by 4, generally...

End of book #1 spoilers... (view spoiler)[ Love the fat cat!!!
I almost bought that the killer of all of them was the Senator, but the aid was the one with the evil plan for cover up... He was creepy to me from the start.
I love Feeny! He is a favorite right away. And Roarke's Butler set his relationship parameters with Eve straight from the start. I wasn't pleased with his speech when she looked for Roark and he was at a meeting...
Eve's abusive childhood is something that defies her, but what makes her awesome is the way she rises above it. It is hard to deal with, hard for the reader to read, but I like her perseverance over it, it makes her relatable, having been victimized without making her a victim. She is kick-ass for sure! (hide spoiler)]
And yes, that romance was rushed and pushy, but the rest of the book made up for it and we got it out of the way in book #1! Now we can see how it progresses through the series:)))
