I don't know how you do it. Your brain has to work in an amazing capacity, because I can barely concentrate on reading and watching sports at the same time... As I said, I will be here for #4 tomorrow...

I know, but she is a genius... Like, for real. You are just really good at optimizing your brain, which is still better than the rest of us mortals... Do you think she is ever coming back? We all really miss her.....

The best thing I can say, is that her PC/phone is still connected to Goodreads... her account says last visited this month, even tho she hasn't posted anything since March...

Took me a long time to start trying to read above 2-2.2x speed again, but now I read alot at 2.5-2.7-2.72x speed (Hoopla is very granular with a slider, and it's hard to get exactly 2.7x speed)
Finally jumping in! Just started book 1, and already I'm seeing some interesting tech comparisons for a book written 20 years ago but set 30 years in the future, like @Iain & Choko were mentioning on page 1 of this thread... one thing that popped out to me was a mention of recording things on disks--when disks got more-or-less phased out for flashdrives & external harddrives, which are slowly being phased out for cloud storage... who knows what's next?

I'm thinking a bit more biblical, lol... the Mark of the Beast, and it's interpretation in the Left Behind series... the fictional biblical apocalypse series... I read it as a kid, like 20 years ago... they had wrist chips that replaced credit cards and cell phones, I think...

Random thought: is it ever explained why Peabody (and other junior officers, I think) address Dallas as 'sir'? (I did some checking: 'sir' is an exclusively male term; 'ma'am' would be correct for a female officer.)Not a problem but as it struck me as a bit odd I wondered if it was ever mentioned.

I just did a google search too... appears I've become so used to it in cop shows, that I didn't even think about it... internet says it's wrong, and you'll likely be reprimanded if you do it in the military/etc...
Yeah, but most sci-fi authors use Sir for both male and female superiors... I have been taking it for granted for ever... I just figured it is one of those things, equality in the ranks and all...

I don't know the narrator's name, but twice now, in two different books, she has pronounced "forte" as "fort," and it is killing me!

The word forte (pronounced “fort”) is a French word meaning “strength” that is used in English to refer to one's talent or ability. Example: English is my forte. This word is often mispronounced “FOR-tay” because it is confused with the Italian word forte (pronounced “FOR-tay”).
As per the internet... professional narrators are usually right... even when I don't want them to be...

I don't know about that. My parents are British English educated - as was I in early childhood. (We are Western Indian /Caribbean), and teaching English was their first career (even though that's not how/when they met). Peabody and Eve's conversation about how Peabody is not acting according to her genetics or upbringing, was absolutely hilarious! If she ever gets an urge to weave a rug, she will let Eve right away:))) Hahaha!

I initially thought it was suspect #1 (because, of course, it would be - they're connected to Roarke - lol), but later I changed my mind to suspect #2 precisely because of Eve and Roark's reaction.

Is it still a mispronunciation if everyone in the world pronounces it this way besides dictionaries? It's not like English pronounces anything like the origin language. Don't even get me started on "manga" or "karaoke." I think there is a case to be made that it is "fort" in French, but "forte" in English...
Haha! I guess everyone has noticed the "fort" thing:))) As I said, now I pronounce it like she does, but I used to be the "for-tay" person before. I accept it either way. Being a foreigner in an English speaking world and having been around people from all types of backgrounds, I kind of go with the flow... Nyssa, I honestly have no idea on the suspect of book #4... Book #4... Another book down! This had some more sci-fi elements, including the flying cars and flying skateboards:))) The interactive games, I guess, were just coming out when she wrote this, and now that Nirkatze pointed it out, I can't stop noticing everything being on disk:))))) I am interested to see how that develops and changes through the series...The characters are getting more settled, although Eve and Rourke are still going through their hunny moon phase. This is actually my least favorite part of the books. I can't wait for them to get into "we are happily married" mode...
Overall, I enjoyed it and the guessing which one of the two suspects did it. Still fun to read:)
I didn't get to read much yesterday, so I just completed Chapter 15. I LOVE Peabody! She is the best aide/work-wife/partner Eve could have by her side
Almost done with book 1, and reading through folks comments!But OMG I was not expecting all the graphicness. Graphic sex. Graphic violence. Graphic PEDOPHILIA. That was hard to listen through.
I am not liking Roarke in this first book--similar to what @Shaitarn said in comment 48--many times Eve says something and he pushes back and shuts her down... even though she sometimes pushes back, much of what he does and says would have been instant dump-your-ass moments for me. Hell no. You do not get to make those decisions for me, control freak. But I'm holding on to what @Choko said in comment 45--about this being just setting up the romance so that the future books can focus on the mysteries... what @Iain says in comment 50 about Robb still figuring the character out and that he gets better... and what y'all have been saying about the series really hitting stride later...
Side characters haven't made themselves stick out yet--having trouble keeping track of everyone on audio, except for sleezy chief dude. I'm sure that'll crystalize in time.
Nirkatze, that was our main discussion, that more than the everyday details, the romance in the beginning of the series really dates itself to 1994 when it was written. That was the moment when the "macho man trying to be sensitive but still a man" started imposing himself in publishing, and sex was a must have in order for a book to be picked up. I think you were Born about that time or a bit later, so you were lucky to miss it, but yes, it becomes better for sure! The pedophilia and graphic crimes - think of this as Law and Order SVU. It deals a lot with those types of crimes, mostly because Eve has gone through this as a kid and is in a big way what drives her to bring justice to those victims, and not just brush it off like some other cops might do. She is like a dog with a bone - doesn't let go!
And we finally get Peabody, her sidekick, as Nyssa said, in book # 4, although we met her in book #3...
I hope you don't give up on it... Survive the beginning of the series, and then it becomes better:)))

@Choko--good point about the romance being dated to 90s... I was born by then but mostly reading kiddie books... but this does match the feel of 90s books I've read, though I can't put my finger on anything specific...And what you're saying about Eve is a good point--I like how she approached it all, like a terrier, and her empathy with the victims... though I think the way she blames herself--"I should have protected them!"--is also very 90s.
Also, Galahad is a great name for a cat. May have to name my future cat Galahad. Maybe Galahad and Gideon...and a Lady Purrasaki...
Just finished book 1! Was not expecting it so soon--still almost 40 mins on audiobook, but I guess it's a sneak peek. I will keep reading, at least through book 4! Not gonna judge a long series by its first few entries. Some things need warming up... Jumping right into book 2, then I'll take a break for St. Mary's and jump back in for book 3.
I am starting Ceremony in Death now, but my Libby version and audio version are different. The audio version seems abridged, as it's left out at least two separate paragraphs at this point.
Hmmm... I am sorry... I had no idea. it doesn't say it is abridged...
Finally grab book 1 into my hands :) I'm around end of chapter 9. I like Eve. Roarke is interesting bit of man. Senator DeGlass... Hmmm... Basically going for my nerves...

Then I made some spaghetti for dinner... and continued watching season 2 of Escape from Bloodkeep, season 2 of Dimension 20, a D&D show... and I finally made it far enough in that I've been sucked in and don't want to stop, so there goes my day...
Luckily, this is a Side Quest season, so there's only 6 episodes, so it won't eat as much of my time as season 1 did, Fantasy High... watched that about a month ago... maybe 2 months?... I mentioned it in the Vagabond thread whenever that was...
This is the last In Death book I read, before taking a break and switching to audio on my return... I remember it being the first one I felt like I figured out super early on... altho, on re-read, it's felt much more obvious who the baddies were, each time, so far...
Luckily, later in the series, Robb/Roberts leans into it sometimes, and just does bad guy POV chapters instead of trying to hide it from the reader... early on here, the bad guy tries to be mysterious as the POV chapter happens...
