I just did a wiki search... Prosecutor Cher Reo doesn't appear until book 21... I was way off-base, lol...

Nyssa | 1651 comments I just started Immortal in Death (I blame all of you for my current addiction, by the way!!!)

The opening scene between Eve & Roarke has me grinning like an idiot (I am so mushy! *Sigh*).

But Mavis? Really, Eve!?! I don't blame Roarke! LOL
I'm sure things will go much better than expected.

Just spent most of the day reading Gallant... and almost regret it... should have read some reviews, first... :(

It wasn't quite my cup of tea, either. I gave it a 2.5, rounded to 3 because I had to finish it. Sadly, it didn't pay off.

Yea... that was the thing... it ended with the bad guy just locked back up, working on wearing down the next protector... very little sign that anything had been fixed, long-term...

Started book 3: Leonardo!!!... and Peabody as junior detective/aide... things are slowly coming together...

message 161: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Just finished The Sword of Truth and am jumping into #3 here! Yay, Iain, you said we get to meet Leonardo! This is much earlier than I remembered...

message 162: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Pandora's scene at Leonardo's was pretty funny:))) This is a great introduction to him and Mavis' relationship:))) All up to the murder was quite hilarious:)))

message 163: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments I am beginning to notice the characters coming into themselves and I am loving it! 35% in and Summerset's story is heartbreaking! I understand Rourke's sense of guilt, despite it not really being his fault...

message 164: by Nirkatze (new)

Nirkatze | 20939 comments Dang, 4 pages... This is going to be some fun reading when I finally join y'all... and not just the books themselves. Reminds me of when I finally jumped into Wandering Inn... XD

Crack (character): that's what I love about this series... any character can become a loveable recurring character...

message 168: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35238 comments Mod
This is definitely the best plotted book of the first 3... having a connection to the suspects adds alot more stakes...

5 stars... would deck her again... :D

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Nirkatze, these books are inhalable! You will catch up in no time!

Book #3... Iain, I had totally forgotten about Dickhead too, and he is hilarious! So slimy in a way, but still somehow likable.

Your early theory is exactly my early theory... he is just too... much of everything. And the way he treats Peabody gives me the creeps! I don't care how good looking he is!

message 172: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Shaitarn, haha! Totally! I am surprised she could stop herself:)

message 173: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Iain, did you finish #3 already? I am still only half way through... It is getting good!

Yea... I binged it this morning, from like 4-7am... did some laundry and recharged my phone, and moved on to Catalogue of Catastrophe...

I've been reading as much as possible on my days off, recently, to make up for any shortcomings on my work days :D

It's gonna fall apart, soon, when I have to buckle down and update some spreadsheets and do all my ratings/reviews, before the end of the year...

I loved this one, just didn't want to spoil the ending... showcases the team, Roarke/Eve working together better, found family, etc...

message 175: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments As I said in Vagabond, you have been a reading machine:)))

Book #3 ... Ch. 12-13 were rough to read, all emotional and stuff... I had no idea she came to remember so early in the series... Mira was the MVP of the moment! I love that woman! But Summerset did good as well, despite her not feeling safe enough with him in order to relax...

We also got to meet Trina!!! How could we have forgotten about her! Those moments of Eve's encounters with the beauty team are always hilarious! Eve would rather deal with a gang of crazed armed junkies in a dark alley empty handed, then let herself be pampered!:))) Trina is her own personal demon:)

message 176: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Still book #3... I forgot to say, the illegals cop is really upsetting me, because I think he is using Peabody and I think he is going to hurt her feelings, and I already feel very protective of her!

message 177: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments So, I finished #3 and I enjoyed it. However, that ending...(view spoiler)

message 178: by Nyssa (new) - added it

Nyssa | 1651 comments Book #3 I just finished chapter 13.

I don't trust (view spoiler) at all! If my suspicions are correct, then it sucks -- poor Peabody!

Peabody gets her romantic partner in book 7ish… that’s when he’s introduced anyway…

message 180: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Nyssa, so glad you haven't abandoned us:))) Yeah, he is slime and Peabody is very naive in her way... I don't really want her to change. Eve is jaded and hurt, the sunshine that is Peabody balances her out perfectly! And Feeny is in the center of that balance beam.

Shaitarn | 2185 comments Is it just me or (view spoiler)

message 182: by Nyssa (new) - added it

Nyssa | 1651 comments Oh, I’m not planning on going anywhere. :)

I had another book that I wanted to finish, which delayed this one.

I hope to finish this one tonight.

I like Peabody.

And based on what just happened in the chapter, I hope Summerset is ready to take the stick out of his ass. I still don’t understand why he doesn’t like Eve. He’s nice to Mavis and company.

message 183: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Shaitarn, he is a total jerk! I guess he is really hot, but this doesn't give him the right to treat our ladies the way he does... Those types of guys give me the creeps every time!

message 184: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Nyssa, it does seem weird that he can be so nice to Mavis and her folks, but is so hard on Eve. I wonder if it is jealousy. He is seeing that Rourke is truly in love this time and is afraid that she is not good enough for him, or that she could hurt him, maybe? Mavis did say he treats Rourke as a son, not as an employer, and that makes sense after you get to the backstory of how they met...

Possibly. I did read the back story, so yeah, that makes sense...but I still don't like it. *being stubborn*

message 186: by Nyssa (new) - added it

Nyssa | 1651 comments I'm getting really annoyed at how disrespectful Eve is being to Mavis & Leonardo at the show. I get that Eve has a job to do, but Mavis is practically begging her not to disrupt Leonardo's big night, and Eve isn't paying her any mind.
I'm sure things will be fine when all is said and done, but as I'm reading it, I'm so pissed at Eve's blindness to her friend's anxiety. Like take a breath, Lutenient, look your best friend in the eye, and reassure her for a minute!!

message 187: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Yeah, this is the way Eve deals with her own pain. She has created this COP personality for herself in order not to be afraid, vulnerable, or fall apart. She feels if she stops and is a human for even a little bit, she will go insane and will not be able to cope. I think the people who start surrounding her little by little, ground her and she gets better...

My Review

There was something about this one - I just don't know how to articulate it.

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Yay, Nyssa!!! Yay!

message 190: by Shaitarn (new)

Shaitarn | 2185 comments Finished. Three stars. I did like (view spoiler)

This series is in the 'it's okay but not great' bracket for me. I'm enjoying the reads well enough but it's not a 'stay up to 3 am reading' series. I'll probably drop up when I've finished the first 7 books I have - I don't really have the money (or shelf space!) to justify buying books I'm not absolutely loving.

Nyssa | 1651 comments I can not believe they referenced Young Frankenstein!!! LOL

Fair... this is/was a popcorn read, for me, as Soo likes to call them... I got them in bulk in 2014... now, I can't see myself quitting the series, even as I haven't loved the new ones as much, in awhile... the series is so long, I feel like it has it's own plot tropes...

message 193: by Nyssa (new) - added it

Nyssa | 1651 comments Popcorn read is a great description. I also find that sometimes that's exactly what hits the spot.

I've been borrowing the books from the library via Libby. There is no way I'd be able to afford to buy all of them.

message 194: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Shaitarn, I understand completely. I think, for me, this is a series I started for the mysteries and stayed with for the characters' relationships. And as Iain and Nyssa said, sometimes popcorn is good for the soul:)))

message 195: by Shaitarn (new)

Shaitarn | 2185 comments Book 4: Peabody is developing quite the sense of humour! She's rapidly becoming a favourite character in this series.

Peabody makes the series, for me... Dallas trains Peabody to be a detective... Peabody trains Dallas to be a healthy adult / friend / wife... sands down her rough edges with her Free-ager family background...

message 198: by Shaitarn (new)

Shaitarn | 2185 comments 13 chapters in and you know what? I'm really enjoying this one! :D

Is this one of those series that takes the first three or four books to hit their stride? Because if I like the next three as much as this one, I think I'll have to reverse that decision to drop out.

message 199: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35238 comments Mod
I think so... the first 2 are definitely rough... relationship not sorted, characters not all introduced... 3rd book was the first book with most of the important characters (and there are still plenty of smaller characters waiting to be introduced and become recurring/important characters)...

message 200: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Shaitarn, I am with Iain on this one. I think the series really starts hitting its stride starting with books 4-5...
