I just saw this too--I think it is saying this is book 7? Here's the link if anyone is interested:

Still planning on jumping in as much as I can after the GR choice awards are done. :)

You can if you want, but I'm not sure it's a good idea...

1) the series is heavily serialized, with a tight timeline, and you'll be meeting a ton of characters that probably haven't shown up yet in the early books... the short stories didn't start popping in until the author had a best grasp of the characters, imo...

2) they aren't going to give a very accurate feel for the series, I don't think, since the short stories all have fairytale/fantasy aspects the main series doesn't... the 2 main characters take on the roles of believer and skeptic, while solving the case... I can't remember the order of the short stories, but there's ghosts, hansel & gretel, a vampire/werewolf one I think, etc...

message 105: by Monika (new)

Monika | 2311 comments I did write down all books and short stories Iain and you are right, better to start from book 1... Hopefully I'll have it soon... Somehow...

message 106: by Tonari no Emily (new)

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments Finished the second book Glory in Death! These really do go by so fast. If I can get the rest for free or cheap I guess I'm in it for the long haul (or until I get tired of them ;))

I hope Rourke grows on me (view spoiler)

Muderer (view spoiler)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments I am running a tad behind, but I will be here by tomorrow:)

message 108: by Nyssa (new) - added it

Nyssa | 1651 comments So, I knew Nora Roberts was known for Romance novels, but I had no idea -- It turns out this is way too intense for my 19-year-old (that Lola scene mortified both of us), so I'm reading and listening on my own now.

I'm currently reading Book#1 - Chapter 12.

I really want to like Roark, but he's so aggressive - I find him fascinating but a bit off-putting.

I don't know how I feel about Eve yet.

I do like Feeny, though - I can't explain why.

Question: Iain mentioned the books have a procedural feel, so does this first case get solved in this book?

message 109: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Yes! Most cases get solved in their own book. Some of the bad guys sometimes get out of jail and make a repeat appearance though...

Yeah --- We thought there was going to be a brief description. As soon as the scenarios started, we just kind of looked at each other. Then it just kept going! So, I paused the audio and opted to read ahead. I then fast-forwarded the audio until after the shooting. I think we listened to the next chapter and then called it.

What are you talking about?... me and my nana listen to these stories together every sunday... just kidding :D

message 114: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Hahaha!!! Yeah, nana loves them!;))))

The thing is, at one point late 80's and early 90's, you couldn't sell a book unless there was some sex happening... I remember my friends and I noted the pages, so those who didn't want to read them could just skip them... I am not a fan of that part either, but I just skim and continue with the story:)

Brian | 1681 comments Finished book 2. Overall, pretty good, not earth shattering. I can see the characters are starting to develop and the plot kept me wondering til about 2/3 through. Could be my reading mood recently (a little burned out). I will def continue

Don't expect a masterpiece, and you'll be happy with the plots...

message 120: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Starting book #2 tonight... My dad is in the ICU and for the last 3 days I have been staring at the oxygen mask willing him to keep breathing... He awoke this afternoon and now I feel ten times lighter... It is amazing how little you can concentrate on a book while waiting around a sick bed... I tried, but it wasn't working out. I am back though. He was actually coherent and I can exhale and return to my usual activities. Hopefully he keeps on getting better.!

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Thank you guys! He is a stubborn old guy, who thinks that his wife and daughter worry too much and doesn't want to listen to us when we try to take care of him:) I really wouldn't have him any other way:)))

Totally dates the book back to the 90's:) I still don't mind, just noting...

I had the same thoughts.

Who is she, again?

message 131: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Nyssa, I also wondered why her name was Dallas and it has a good backstory:) I mean, it is kind of tragic, but good nonetheless.

Book #2, up to Ch. 9... (view spoiler)

message 132: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Mira is the psychologist for the police. She is awesome! Another character I would like to have as a friend.

message 133: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments When is Peabody going to show up? And the prosecutor? And the others from the Electronics Division? I hope they start showing up soon:)))

I hate seeing Eve + Roark fight! It is like seeing your parents fighting - you know it is not critical, but you hate it nonetheless...

I actually can relate to Eve when it comes to those luxuries she is being casually introduced to around her relationship. I had a relationship with someone who was very rich back in the day, and I think my not being able to get used to the lifestyle is what ultimately broke us up. I never felt comfortable within my skin while in it, and I couldn't get over the power differential between us. I felt free once I broke it off... I was in my early 20's. I would have thought better of it had I been more mature:))) Don't I wish I had those problems nowadays, hahaha!

Feeny's division creeps up in the next few books... not sure about the lawyer... I think she was in the first book a bit, wasn't she?... or is that this one?... or am I thinking of another series?...

message 140: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments She hasn't shown up in book #2 yet.. I am 85% in and I am enjoying it quite a bit:) Can't wait to see who the murder is and how Eve treats him...

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Book #2 ... Finished! This was good! I had a lot of fun with it. I hope Nadine learned some things and I hope we are on the fast track of getting some more Peabody:) Next week the next book:)

message 142: by Brian (new)

Brian | 1681 comments Guilty! I started book 3 yesterday. Have another BR next week so wanted to knock it out. I’m liking this one better than book 2. I’ll wait to share until y’all start Monday

message 143: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments I have been saying, the books get better as we go. She flashes out the characters and honestly, once the two of them get married, it is easier to read:)

Oh, okay. At first, I thought it was his being a snob, but now I think it might be more personal - like she arrested someone he knew or something.

I knew what would happen as soon as (view spoiler)

I am oddly relieved that (view spoiler).

Edited to Add: After reading the first couple of pages of Chapter 13, I might have to revise my earlier statement!

Are they (view spoiler) in it together!?! Strangers on a Train style!?!

Curiouser and curiouser.
