I'm about 50 pages from the end, hoping to finish tonight and have decided (view spoiler)[I want Morse to be the murderer. And get killed when he attempts to flee justice. He probably isn't, but Roarke's comment about him being about to show emotions without actually feeling them has made me suspicious. And I hate him. (hide spoiler)]

You can if you want, but I'm not sure it's a good idea...

1) the series is heavily serialized, with a tight timeline, and you'll be meeting a ton of characters that probably haven't shown up yet in the early books... the short stories didn't start popping in until the author had a best grasp of the characters, imo...

2) they aren't going to give a very accurate feel for the series, I don't think, since the short stories all have fairytale/fantasy aspects the main series doesn't... the 2 main characters take on the roles of believer and skeptic, while solving the case... I can't remember the order of the short stories, but there's ghosts, hansel & gretel, a vampire/werewolf one I think, etc...

Finished the second book Glory in Death! These really do go by so fast. If I can get the rest for free or cheap I guess I'm in it for the long haul (or until I get tired of them ;))

So, I knew Nora Roberts was known for Romance novels, but I had no idea -- It turns out this is way too intense for my 19-year-old (that Lola scene mortified both of us), so I'm reading and listening on my own now.

I'm currently reading Book#1 - Chapter 12.

I really want to like Roark, but he's so aggressive - I find him fascinating but a bit off-putting.

I don't know how I feel about Eve yet.

I do like Feeny, though - I can't explain why.

Question: Iain mentioned the books have a procedural feel, so does this first case get solved in this book?

Yes! Most cases get solved in their own book. Some of the bad guys sometimes get out of jail and make a repeat appearance though...

Yeah --- We thought there was going to be a brief description. As soon as the scenarios started, we just kind of looked at each other. Then it just kept going! So, I paused the audio and opted to read ahead. I then fast-forwarded the audio until after the shooting. I think we listened to the next chapter and then called it.

The thing is, at one point late 80's and early 90's, you couldn't sell a book unless there was some sex happening... I remember my friends and I noted the pages, so those who didn't want to read them could just skip them... I am not a fan of that part either, but I just skim and continue with the story:)

Finished book 2. Overall, pretty good, not earth shattering. I can see the characters are starting to develop and the plot kept me wondering til about 2/3 through. Could be my reading mood recently (a little burned out). I will def continue

Starting book #2 tonight... My dad is in the ICU and for the last 3 days I have been staring at the oxygen mask willing him to keep breathing... He awoke this afternoon and now I feel ten times lighter... It is amazing how little you can concentrate on a book while waiting around a sick bed... I tried, but it wasn't working out. I am back though. He was actually coherent and I can exhale and return to my usual activities. Hopefully he keeps on getting better.!

Book #2, up to Ch. 9... (view spoiler)[ I already hate that slimy reporter and I loved how Eve bypassed him and went to Nadine:)

The lawyer lady who got killed, the way she is described, I wish we had known her. Would have been a great person to read about. Her family is fine, but I don't trust her son. Actually, I have a hard time trusting any gamblers, so even when they are portrayed as good guys in movies and books, I have a tendency to withdraw any affection from them. If I was a friend of the daughter, I would be advising her strongly to reconsider the marriage, or at least to have an ironclad prenup!

I hate the fighting over Eve doing her job and having to ask Roark questions, and him getting his feelings hurt over this. She is a cop and someone is obviously trying to throw suspicion over his way, so by doing her dew diligence she is doing her best to clear him as a suspect. He needs to understand!

Also, I don't understand the hostility the Butler and Eve have for each other... I hope we find more about that.

Last point - we need more cameos from the Cat!!! (hide spoiler)]

I hate seeing Eve + Roark fight! It is like seeing your parents fighting - you know it is not critical, but you hate it nonetheless...

I actually can relate to Eve when it comes to those luxuries she is being casually introduced to around her relationship. I had a relationship with someone who was very rich back in the day, and I think my not being able to get used to the lifestyle is what ultimately broke us up. I never felt comfortable within my skin while in it, and I couldn't get over the power differential between us. I felt free once I broke it off... I was in my early 20's. I would have thought better of it had I been more mature:))) Don't I wish I had those problems nowadays, hahaha!

Peabody!!!!! She just showed up at the (view spoiler)[ third crime scene!!!!! I feel terrible for the third murder victim. It seems so gratuitous from the murderer's standing. He, and I am pretty sure it is he at this point, just murdered her for no reason...

Several more minutes in the book, and I think she was mistaken for someone else. The killer thought she was Nadine, because Louise was wearing her jacket... What a bummer! (hide spoiler)]

I am oddly relieved that (view spoiler)[Eve & Roarke reconciled sooner than later. It would have annoyed me if they had dragged it out. (hide spoiler)].

Edited to Add: After reading the first couple of pages of Chapter 13, I might have to revise my earlier statement!

Are they (view spoiler)[David Angelini & Morse (hide spoiler)] in it together!?! Strangers on a Train style!?!

(view spoiler)[David lures his mom there, Morse kills her, David gets the money, and Morse gets the story. One of them kills the actress and makes Roarke a suspect; Morse gets another story. David kills "Nadine," Morse gets rid of a rival AND gets another story ---- but what does David get out of the latter killings? (hide spoiler)]
