Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments So, I am about 20% in Loyalty in Death #9... And here we see what JDR was thinking in the 90's will happen in September 25 2023... Apparently the Urban Wars are just about over and some terrorist group does a bomb number in Arlington, VA... This was written years before September 11th 2001... Just made me kind of nostalgic about the 80's and 90's...

Yes... BUT... World Trade Center was also bombed in 1993, I think... just on a more minor scale... so there's something to take inspiration from in the 90s...

message 555: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments You are right... Before the big one, the bombing in 93 was a big deal... It just got lost after in the comparison...

message 559: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments I thought JDR had a ton of leads for us to figure out who were the Cassandra culprits... In Death #9

I enjoyed it just fine:) From the moment Peabody's brother was introduced you just knew he would be involved in everything somehow... Those Freeagers are something:)))

What was interesting to me was all the things the government had done in their pursuit and capture of the Apollo terrorist cell... The anger and kind of carte blanche they used really reminded me of everyone's attitude after 9/11... We even supported starting a war with a country which had nothing to do with it, just because their people looked a bit like the terrorists... The anger and the desire to make someone pay is irrational and gets totally out of control when in the scale of a whole country... I was thinking how we were constantly told "we" were killing all types of terrorists, but did we really? And how many people who had nothing to do with it became "collateral damage"? I can see how relatives might decide to avenge their folks, despite us having no idea how those people were affected...

I know in the book , end of book spoilers, (view spoiler)

I can totally see the very hot in the 90's passionate pushing and kissing as dating itself, and kind of WTF in today's world:))) Hahaha! They didn't call them "bodice ripping romances" for nothing:))) OMG, I am dating myself big-time at the moment... Hahaha!

1. How did I miss this comment until now?

2. I know exactly what you mean, except I could not read fast enough to go backward before going forward, so I spent a lot of time struggling or in limbo.

Exactly! Gen Xers get that scene.

message 564: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Nyssa, yes!!! Particularly those of us who were reading romances at the time. It was almost mandatory for someone, man, woman or both, randomly to push each other into a wall, sometimes in the most improbable places or weather conditions, and have passionate kissing or sex scene, in such unbelievable manner, that just thinking about it in reality will give you muscle cramps and bad back, but that was "PASSION!", something us mortal readers just couldn't ever get in real life:))) I always think of the 9 1/2 weeks movies... That was the romance writing of our generation, where stalking was sexy and jealous rages were a sign of caring... Haha:) You have to just have fun with those and take them as cultural and time markers....

*Confession* I have never seen 9 1/2 weeks, but I remember the buzz around it!

Monika | 2313 comments Holiday in Death arrived yesterday :) I think I should start reading book number 4 LOL!

message 568: by Monika (new)

Monika | 2313 comments Almost hit 60% of Rapture in Death. Is it me or how Nora wrote this book that I just don't like Jess, he seems kinda slimy, bad boy character.

message 569: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) | 2 comments I absolutely love this series and have read a lot a couple of times. May I recommend trying the audiobooks? They are so good, I never actually read the books anymore.

PS - What book are you up to?

message 570: by Monika (new)

Monika | 2313 comments I'm bit behind (book 4), rest of the crew somewhere around book 9 I think :)

message 571: by Choko (new)

I just started #10... In Death Day!!!

Re:romance/sexytimes: way too many shows targeted at teens romantacize "sex offender romances"... student/teacher/etc... Ezra/Aria in Pretty Little Liars is a good example...

And speaking of stalker romance, didn't the main character of that You show feel weird how many fans loved him / his character?...

It's a show about a serial killer who gets obsessed with women that become future victims... based on a book...

I never watched it either... but recognize the main actor from Easy A... was also on Gossip Girl, apparently...

message 575: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Aaahhh, got it... The only thing I have been watching on TV lately is sports... The rest of the time I read:)))

Nyssa | 1651 comments I love the show You!! Let me emphasize I love the show; I did not say that I love the character. The character is effing crazy, but the show is fantastic.!!

I would have concern for those who love the character. That said, if any of you watched season two, or was it season three, I can’t remember, but he met his match. If he is crazy, she is in a category all to herself.

Season 3... I saw the poster while looking for the season 1 poster... made me almost want to watch... they looked like a happy family in the suburbs... but were baking body parts into pies or something... there was a bloody Kitchen-Aid Mixer in the poster...

Season 4, he looks like a grumpy professor with alot of facial hair & a cardigan...

message 578: by Monika (new)

Monika | 2313 comments Book 4 finished. I didn't like Reanna from the page she showed up, intuition? I was thinking which one of them, Reanna or Jess, is this sick serial killer. So we can say I had 50/50 chance to be right :) What wait for me in book 5? Don't tell me :) I'll find out soon :)

I'm going to backtrack to Loyalty #9 after I'm done with current audio, then jump into #11... hopefully I won't get whiplash from having accidentally skipped to #10... looking forward to y'alls juicy #9 spoiler tags.

Normally I'd be the same camp as @Choko & Nyssa about reading books out of order-->.< gah! I just can't believe I didn't notice!

I don't think anyone has finished #10 yet (except for accidental me)--do we want to push #11 start date to next Monday (1/30) instead of 1/23? Also let some of the hold-waiters and just-starteders catch up?

message 598: by Nyssa (new) - added it

Nyssa | 1651 comments I don't mind either way. I read Judgment in Death this weekend - I couldn't put it down.
Please let me know when we officially get to Betrayal in Death (#12).

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Just started book 10 and am enjoying it so far. I am only up to Ch. 5, but I always find it funny how stereotypes of famous actors are portrayed, and since I used to know a bunch of those back in Bulgaria, how spot-on they are:) Also, that was a great beginning for the book! I can just picture Eve trying to solve the murder in the play and wanting to jump on stage to do the interrogation herself:))))))

message 600: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments In Death #10, up to Ch. 5... We always note how awesome Peabody and Mavis are, but I think we are not giving enough attention to Nadine. She is perfect in every scene she is in and I think she brings a lot to the series:) I am glad she is seeing Mira for therapy. She obviously needs it...
